I have been looking at different options to better the headlights in my wife's 2014 Edge. I ordered a set of OSRAM bulbs from Powerbulbs. I did the mod to the bulb socket so they would hook up to the plug on the Edge wiring harness that was no problem. But the videos I watched on modifying these bulbs to make them work also showed trimming one of the 3 tabs that hold the bulb into the projector housing. I was able to get these particular bulbs locked into the projector housing without modifying any of the locking tabs,although they are clocked differently than the factory bulbs. I drove the car after dark last night and maybe I had my expectations too high but these bulbs do not seem any better that the OEM bulbs. Could the fact that I was able to get them in the projector housing at a different clocking position than the OEM bulbs be the problem? These are the bulbs I ordered. Thanks, Sam

Normally our generation of Edge uses a 9012 bulb. I just put some Vosla +30 bulbs in our 2013 Edge and we are very pleased with the results. The light color is around 3400k, so not quite as white looking as what you purchased, but the light output is 1875 lum. and we are getting very good results as far as usable light. I have tried using the blue tinted bulbs, and although the light looks whiter it is not really any brighter as far as usable light. We also found that that on dark road, especially in the rain, that the blue tinted bulbs were useless.. We were using Silverstar 9012's, but again, switched to the Vosla bulbs. The Vosla bulbs are used in GMC trucks, and the GM part number is 23342527.

 

To answer your question on seating of the bulbs, as long as the tabs are in place properly I di not think direction is really relevant. Others can chime on on that as well.

Even a 35 watt HID kit makes a huge difference in 2011-2014 Edges. I don't think swapping out the halogen bulbs can even come close. My $50.00 35/5000 HID kit was probably the best money I've spent on my Edge. They can be extremely durable if installed properly.

What HID kit did you use and how was the install as far as difficulty? I'm trying to find more,better lighting to help driving the dark ,curvy roads in our area. At night it gets real black,with a lot of deer crossings.

Absolutely go HID!

 

Installation of the HIDs is a breeze. Im a fan of the TRS morimoto kits but some have had luck with the far less expensive DDM kits (many others have not).

I have a DDM kit that's been going strong for about 6 years but I'd probably go with Morimoto today. Installation is really easy if ya just plug in a 35 watt set. Only thing ya gotta do is cut holes in the dust covers. My installation was more difficult because I built a dual relay waterproof harness which could explain the crazy durability I've gotten out of a cheap DDM kit. I've thought about switching over to a 55 watt kit which lots of members have installed over the years with good results. I'd definitely use a beefy harness if ya go with a 55 watt kit. Macs got a pretty good video of his HID install on Youtube. You usually need a bowl of popcorn and a few refreshments to make it through Macs videos but they're very well done.:):):)

55 watt kits (especially from low price distributors) are definitely not recommend. There is no such thing as a 55 watt bulb so the kits just run a ballast that overdrives the 35 watt bulb. That reduces bulb life by as much as half (even Morimoto advises 20% loss for their top of the line kit) and they only add about 20% more light but a lot more heat. That added heat could easily be enough to damage sockets or (very expensive) headlight housings. Plus, many of the cheaper so-called 55W kits are actually 55W input but nowhere near 55W output so you're not even getting what you paid for. (Actually, many of the cheap 35W kits don't output 35 watts either but they're still enough to be significantly brighter than halogen so people don't complain.)

 

You would get more bang for your buck by buying a high quality 35W kit like Morimoto, Drivebright, or Diode Dynamics than you would from a cheap 55W kit like DDM or something of unknown origin from ebay.

Yes, the in-house brand name for TRS (The Retrofit Source) is Morimoto - recognized as one of the best HID producers in the market. But even they don't make a 55W kit anymore. They went to a 50W kit instead to try to somewhat reduce the issues with heat and capsule life. Still, if you're going to go with a higher output kit, Morimoto is definitely a good choice... it pays to go with the best.

I've been looking for a solution to getting my wife better lighting from the headlights on her Edge for some time now. I've looked at a lot of different bulbs and HID set ups and am now thinking that HID is going to be the best bet. I watched this video by MACTFORDEDGE and the one thing that I want to know is,does anyone make a kit with bulbs that don't have to be modified to get them in the projector socket at the correct position. I watched this video and it took him a couple of times to get the bulb in correctly and that was after modifying(grinding the tabs) the bulbs. What I want is a kit with a bulb that is correct for her 2014 Edge and does not need to be modified(grinding the tabs) to get the bulb in correctly the first time.I have large hands and it took me almost an hour to change the bulbs out when I put the OSRAM bulbs in. I do not want to have to do that several times. This is another of Ford's better ideas.
