2007 edge starts and runs without key

I have a 2007 Ford edge with a confusing electrical problem.

My battery was drained, and had it jumped. Next morning it was dead again so I hooked up battery charger. Still wouldn't start.

Installed new battery, and as soon as I attached positive cable it started the engine, without the key even in the ignition. I removed the negative cable and engine continue to run. I then removed a relay switch from the fuse box located in the engine compartment. Only then did the engine shut off.

Now, the only way for me to start and stop my car is by inserting relay back into fuse box and attaching battery cable. The only use my key serves is to unlock the steering so I can drive. I've also noticed that my stereo won't work. It's on but I have no volume.

I had an after market remote starter that I had removed, no change.

I also replaced my ignition switch, no change.

I've also noticed that there seems to be continuos power being fed to the fuse box next to the battery. (is this normal?).

I'm scratching my head hear and hoping for some help.

This sounds like a stuck starter solenoid. My 11 edge i had had a feature that disengaged the starter when the vehicle begins to run so you could not keep the starter spinning by holding the key. This feature may be allowing the stuck solenoid to act as a key each time you reconnect the battery, spinning the starter and starting the engine because the solenoid is back feeding the ignition circuit, but stopping the starter when the engine begins to run.

Also check the battery/starter cable harness. It has some connectors on it, unplug each one, inspect for moisture or any green corrosion, clean and add dielectric grease to each connection before reconnecting. Starter is not to hard to change on these vehicles- it is on top under the air box, not under the car.

A stuck starter would only turn over the engine - it still needs spark and fuel to run or at least fuel if the engine is hot and dieseling.

True but the ignition can be being back-fed from the low voltage trigger wire- just trying to brainstorm to help th OP.

Have you tried swapping relay positions?

Something is whacky-
