TSS and OSS symtoms

Looking at past posts, my 2008 Edge Limited/120k miles - had the symptoms of TSS/OSS failure [stopped, turning left, hard shudder and no power/1st gear to get to side of road] BUT nothing read abnormal on the dash - no wrench/odometer was fine/no airbag or low tire pressure alert....

Got home (thankfully only 1 mile and mostly downhill) did some research and went back out after a half hour and drove down block and today to work without issues.

Obviously want this to get fixed sooner than on the side of a highway 100 miles from anything.

Do I just proactively get this fixed thinking it needs TSS/OSS replaced?

Have you pulled codes from the PCM, that is the first place to start as most codes do not throw warning lights. How does the trans fluid look? Color, condition, level being the 3 things to check. Have the plugs and pcv valve been changed? TB and MAF sensor cleaned?

Being a 1st Gen and at that mileage, the sensors are strongly suspect, but we should run through the checklist first anyway. Sometimes engine problems manifest as transmission problems. incorrect data from engine sensors leads to incorrect commands to the transmission control module.

Recommend getting OEM (Ford/Motorcraft sensors) if you proceed with the work. Aftermarket brands are not much cheaper anyway. There is a video on macbwt's channel that shows you how to replace the sensors:

Just came from dealership - no codes pulled and they put on lift and saw nothing (leaks/etc) So i guess I get to wait until it happens again with hopefully some code sent to the computer.

If this does happen again with no codes - do I just ask them to change the sensors?

I think so, it would be a logical choice. BOTH sensors, not one or the other. Verify the solenoid body assembly is working correctly (resistances within range), change the filter on it while it's out. Also, if you want, verify resistances on the trans range sensor per TSB 10-21-02. Likely will cover all the angles. Checking the valve body is a bit more involved and may be an additional cost.

I wouldn't change the sensors until you know they are causing your problem. My 08 Taurus (66,000 miles) has the same trans and started showing signs of bad sensors about 8 months ago. It actually went into limp-mode while on a 250 mile road trip but a quick battery disconnect and all was fine. Mine has a pretty good shudder under load while cruising down the freeway. If I don't hit the gas to drop down a gear is when I really feel it. Not sure if I'm gonna bother with the sensors unless symptoms get a lot worse. I'm eventually gonna get around to changing the plugs first to see if that makes any difference cuz I'm not totally convinced it's the tranny sensors yet.

took a long trip and no issues (knocking on wood) - It does seem that it shifts differently since it went "limp" a week ago. Downshifts seem more noticeable.

Rethinking how this happened - I was going from 60MPH to slow down to turn left and I was still moving when I hit the gas to turn, then a THUG and SHUDDER sounded like the tranny went to the floor with very little power.

Maybe just missed a gear and went into limp mode? with no codes being pulled, thats the really odd part.
