Sync MFT USB MP3 Issue

Recommended Posts

A strange thing has just started to happen to my audio on my '11 LTD w/ Sync and MFT. I have been adding mp3 songs periodically to a 16g USB drive (about 150 so far) and to this point (2 days ago) everything has played fine in the Edge. I just select USB on the Entertainment screen and it plays the next song in the rotation. It also displays the song name and artist. I can skip/backup etc - normal operation. So far so good. Yesterday however, the USB stick could no longer be read. The system simply indicates "Unknown Artist/Unknown Song" on the main display and below to the left it indicates "Indexing Device." The progress indication shows that it is stuck about 1/3rd of the way through song 82 of 150. That's it. I have tried to wait out whatever 'indexing device' does to no avail. I have formatted the USB stick and recopied the mp3's to it to no avail. I have gotten a brand new USB stick and copied the mp3's to it to no avail. I have inserted the USB stick into the other USB port (in the center console) to no avail. It seems as though the ability to read mp3's off a USB stick has simply gone away into the ether.

Anybody have any idea what could be going on? Any rec's for fixing this? Anybody every heard of a problem like this? Is there some fuse I can full to do an 'audio reset' or somesuch? This is very frustrating as it just appeared out of thin air and I can't seem to find a remedy.

Thanks for any info!

Edit: I have also verified that the file system format is FAT32 on the USB stick.

I've tried loading only a few songs after I read about a potential problem with SYNC not being able to handle a full USB stick. I copied a handful of songs and tried that. No go. Still hung on 'indexing device.' I'll try the battery reset next. I've also check to see that I have the latest version of SYNC - I do. Also thought about doing a SYNC re-boot but isn't that what disconn the battery terminal does - forces a re-boot?

Yes pulling the cable is a hard reset for everything.

Before I pull the battery cable I think I'll try shutting down, pulling Fuse #29 on the inside driver kick panel, then starting up, then shutting down again, and re-inserting Fuse #29. I read elsewhere online that that could possible clear the problem. I don't think so but I'll give it a try. I just reeeeally want be able to listed to my music again on USB and not have to mess with CD's. If this problem is unfixable then I guess I go to Bluetooth from my phone.

Thanks for your feedback.

I have seen this in some forum sometime ago but couldn't find it. So after searching I was able to finally find it, it is a way to restart/reboot the MyFord Touch Screen (Sync 2). It is mentioned in the Owners Manual for the 2016 Explorer (I remeber it did NOT work on the 2011 MKX, but it does work on the 2016 Edge with MFT, yes, Sync 2):

Touchscreen System Reset

The touchscreen system has a system reset feature that can be performed if the function of a SYNC feature is lost. This reset is intended to restore functionality and will not erase any information previously stored in the system (such as paired devices, phonebook, call history, text messages, or user settings). To perform a System Reset, press and hold the Seek Up (>>) button while pressing and holding the Radio Power button. After approximately 5 seconds the screen will go black. Allow a 1-2 minutes for the system reset to complete. You may then resume using the SYNC system.

It is also mentioned in the 2016 Edge Owners manual for Sync 3:

SYNC System Reset

The SYNC system in your vehicle has System Reset feature that can be performed if the function of a SYNC feature is lost. This reset is intended to restore functionality and will not erase any information previously stored in the system (Such as paired devices, phonebook, call history, text messages, or user settings). To perform a System Reset, press and hold the Seek Up (>>) button while pressing and holding the Radio Power button. Release both buttons after 2-3 seconds. Please allow a few minutes for the reset to complete. After a few minutes has passed you can resume using the SYNC system.

Well, I gave the "Seek>> + Power" reset a try and no joy. Didn't do anything but thanks for the suggestion. I think I'm going to do the Fuse 29 pull, then the negative battery cable removal a try. The thing is that I work chef hours and usually don't get home until 11:30P-12am or so. After changing and settling in I don't get to looking at the Edge until after 1am. My neighbors are beginning to wonder why I'm working on my car at 1am! Heh. After I try the fuse pull and/or the cable removal, I'll post back. In the meantime if anyone thinks of anything else to try, I'm all ears!! Thanks for all the info!

Just to let people know about the amount of songs that work on the USB. I have a 2014 Ford Taurus Limited with Sync2 MFT on V3.8 software. I've been using a 32GB USB formatted exfat with 3,600 songs on it and it's been working fine. The initial index took about 20 minutes or so, after that each time I restart the vehicle it only takes about 1 minute to index. I have 5 *.m3u files on it for my 5 playlists and I can select either one and they work fine. I tried going to 6,000 songs by adding another large playlist and ran into problems with it re-indexing on each restart. This doesn't solve your problem, if the power resets don't help then you probably have a hardware failure.

UPDATE: 4pm 3/28

Well I'll be an Unkeys Muncle. It worked!! Pulled the neg battery cable for a few minutes then hooked it back up and reading the USB stick is restored. Thanks all for the input and feedback. I am VERY happy to have my USB music back. Looks like all the radio settings have not be affected either.

It did not, however, restore the guidelines on the reverse cam but the cam still functions fine and the audio warnings are still there. So that I can live with.

Thanks again!

USB problem with 2014 Taurus on Sync2 MFT.

I changed the "Removal Policy" on my USB's which would allow me to download songs to them quicker, which worked fine. When I tried them out in the 2014 Taurus which is Sync2 MFT they created an error which restarted Sync and would not work. I had to reset the "Removal Policy" from "Better Performance" to the "Quick Removal" setting and re-format the USB's to get them to work again.

edited: Even with the "Removal Policy" set to "Quick Removal" I have to eject the USB from my computer (not just pull it out) otherwise it hangs up on my Sync2 MFT and also hangs up on my other vehicle with Sync3.
