Double horn beep after closing door while vehicle is running

Recommended Posts

I have a 2017 Titanium AWD. I updated Sync 3 to version 3.0 a few weeks ago. After the update, I noticed that I no longer get the double horn beep after closing the driver front door after exiting, while the engine is still running. The key is in my pants pocket and not in the vehicle.

Rick, consider yourself lucky. A lot of Ford vehicle owners are very annoyed by that "double honk" and have to have someone turn it off by using a laptop with the Forscan program…. You got it for free!

I just went out to the Edge and tested it twice. There is no longer a double honk after I exit the Edge while it is running with the key in my pocket. All the doors are fully closed. My wife has the second key in her dresser drawer, which I verified is there. The double honk stopped after I updated Sync 3 with version 3.

My double honk is back. I got to thinking that maybe my horn was not working and that is the reason for not getting the double honk. I went out this morning and after starting the Edge I tried the horn. Nothing! I went to my local Ford dealer and the wiring connector for the the horn was not fully snapped in and secured. The dealer said it could of been that way from the factory and it got jostled around after going over numerous bumps over the past year. The wiring connector is secured and snapped in place now. The horn works and the double honk is back. Sync 3 version 3 update and the horn not working were just coincidence.

How do you disable the double horn honk, if you briefly get out of vehicle with the fob in your pocket, in order to not wake the neighbors?

The easiest solution by far is simply to not close the door all the way.

Option 2 is turn off the vehicle. It's already in Park so that's not a big deal unless you want to leave it running for hvac.

Option 3 is to leave the fob in the vehicle.

Option 4 is to use Forscan to disable it.

Thanks all for your responses. I had never heard of Forscan. Now I downloaded a copy and have ordered an ELM327 adapter. It will be interesting hacking into the Edge. Professionally I do something like that for Tesla vehicles (mostly Roadsters and S) which are loaded with electronics. I just wanted a nice vehicle for family use but it looks like I just can't avoid the reverse engineering role.

DON’T CLOSE THE DOOR ALL THE WAY.  It’s that simple.

#4 is by far the best option. Forscan can do this and tons of other things, and is very easy to use, especially in newer Fords. I live in a city, so I'm not leaving my door open. There's also the probability of rain or snow getting in the car. Get you an ELM327 and Forscan, and pay for the premium license. It's well worth it

I am with you, I am all in with ForScan, but you don't have to leave the door open, if you just latch it to the 1st lock the door will not open if locked and since it is not fully closed would not double chirp/horn.
