HID Bulb Replacement Cost

Recommended Posts

I had a headlight on my 2011 Limited change color from white to pink for a couple of days, then the light stopped working. Talking to the Ford Mechanic, the bulb itself costs over $380 dollars itself!

Has anyone obtained a replacement bulb from other sources (Ebay, Amazon, junk place) and had it work for them? I stopped the repair shop investigating since apparently it takes time to disassemble the bumper to test everything out.

I've seen the video of the guy that replaced them himself, as it isn't a trivial replacement but I want to think about options before either doing it myself, or having it replaced.

I am not 100% certain but I do not think you have to disassemble the bumper to replace the headlight. I have played around with them a bit just for when the time comes to replace them. 1st you need to unscrew the the plastic cap on the back of the assembly under the hood. 2nd disconnect the clip that powers the lights. I didn't do this yet but I think it may take a flathead screwdriver to open the clip. 3rd twist bulb so it is loose in the housing and pull out. Reverse steps to install new lights. Again this is just from observing and taking it a partially apart but I do not see the need for taking the bumper apart. Out of precaution I will disconnect the negative battery cable due to the nature of HID bulbs and ballasts. Please correct me if I am wrong.

If the Edge is like the 2011-2015 MKX, which I expect is, then the HID bulbs can be replaced without removing the headlight assembly. Just like what tamugrad2013 stated above, unscrew the cap, disconnect the cable, then twist the HID bulb (counterclockwise?) to remove it.

2011's, if like my old 2011 MKX the bulb size is D3S and had the old OSRAM 66340. In 2012 or 2013 they started using an improved (slightly) model, HBI. Also as tamugrad2013 stated above, the CBI are much better, but there are now even more option. From OSRAM you also have the HBB. From Philips there are the Xenon X-tremeVision gen2 and Xenon Whitevision gen2. Too many options. But if you are just looking for cheap replacements, you can get these for example for cheap.

I have about 75K on my car right now. I am not sure if they are related, but I had done a LED conversion on my car years ago with bulbs from drivebrite. The headlight that failed is on the same side as LED turn signal I got from them. Both seemed to die around the same time.

Let me check out these links, they all seem to be on point! Might opt for the $90 bulbs if they match and have them installed (installation is about $70 an hour) Buying 2 sounds like a great idea, as I don't want to do this again.
