Tire Pressure Sensor Fault

Hi all... long time lurker, finally posting.

We've owned a 2007 Edge SEL (everything but the Nav - mostly an around town vehicle, have an iPhone for directions) since March 2007. Ever since taking delivery, we've had an intermittent problem, which I've never seen addressed here. I just received some new info from my dealer, so I thought I'd share!

Seemingly at random, the vehicle would deliver a Tire Pressure Sensor Fault warning. It happened during road trips, it happened around town. Nothing seemed to be amiss with the tires or their pressure. The in-town dealer told us that it was the same as a Low Tire Pressure warning, but I didn't buy it (nor would I have bought anything else from them, especially the Edge!).

We had made our dealer aware of this right away, and it has been looked at by three dealers. No one had an answer, and I never saw a TSB on this.

Thankfully, during scheduled service this week, we were able to deliver the vehicle with the Tire Pressure Sensor Fault active. They connected it the the diagnostic computer, and were able to at least get an error code: B2872/B287A. The Symptom Code Information on this error indicates that certain cell phone chargers or similar devices may interfere with the wireless connection between the tire sensors and the TPM system receiver. They specifically call out model MOTMINIVPC, a Motorola charger. We have a similar charger in the vehicle but rarely have it plugged in. However, we do permanently keep a Belkin plug-in charger with audio-out in the console power point with a mini-stereo cable plugged in to the AUX jack for our iPods and my iPhone.

Ford recommends that the dealer have us provide the charging device and the discharged cell phone so they can perform a road test and try to replicate the issue. Since this struck me and my dealer service manager as silly, we're keeping an eye out for this ourselves. Also, if this is the extent of the problem, I'm just not likely to worry about this issue at all any more. Since most wireless set-ups like this TPM system and plug-in electrical devices are likely to 1) cause interference and 2) are required to accept interference, there's not much I can do about it!

Anyway, this outlines a problem we were having, and a possible explanation. I hope anyone else searching for info on this issue finds this helpful! Drive on!

Weird.. I have heard that some window tints can make them go crazy but not cell accys. My wife had it pop on this week and after checking the tires, it was a cracked valve stem and going flat. Just be sure for safety sake to atleast check the tires before assuming a malfunction. (Not you MathewGerber but everyone else).

Right. I should have said that we have had all four tires off and checked in the water tub (multiple times). Checked the rims, stems and sensors themselves. The system works fine other than the fault (had two low pressure warnings, correct each time).

I see a bunch of folks have checked out this post. I'd certainly love to hear if anyone else has experienced this as well. The more info I can uncover, the better I'll be able to work with my service department.

Thanks!

Driving home today in my '07 AWD Edge and guess what!???? I'll take it to the dealer this week and see what they say. Funny thing is, I do have a Motorola charger but I haven't had it plugged in this week.

Did you check and make sure that maybe the light is doing its job? It may be possible that the light is working and you have a low tire.

Over the past couple of weeks my light has also come on when traveling at highway speeds only.

The tire pressure is fine, so that's not the problem.

I'll probably wait until I switch out my chrome wheels for the stock wheels for winter riding.

Both sets have sensors and I have the learning tool to read the sensors into the cars computer.

This is interesting as my light came on this morning as well. I checked when I got to work and they all looked visibly fine. When I got home I checked the pressure and all 4 were at 30 psi, so I pumped them up to 35. not sure yet if that has fixed it, but what I just realized is I have a new 'Just Wireless' car charger for my wife's phone and I plugged it in last night to charge overnight. I think this is the first time I've done that but the charger has been plugged in for sometime. We've used while riding around, but this is the first instance I can think of for an overnight charge. I wouldn't think though that would cause a problem unless the TPS sensor receiver is on all the time as well.

I'll have to keep an eye out for that as well. Thanks for the post.

Well, I think mine was jsut due to the psi being 30 all the way around. the light did not come on the following morning.

It is my understanding that the light only comes on if one tire is different in pressure from the rest. I don't think it would be able to detect if all were low. Doesn't it use the anti-lock brake sensors to measure spin speed and find the low tire?

Hi scootertoo. :D Well, not really. Without getting into too much explanation and giving myself a headache, the system measures all four tires. However, when the TPMS warning light comes on, it can not/does not tell you which tire or how many. So in other words, when the warning light comes on, it means at least one tire is low, but is not limited to one tire. Therefore. you can have two, three or four low tires.

So, if the warning light comes on, it is only common sense that we need to check all four. If you check one and fill it, but have another one that is low, the System will still register a low tire. Fill only the second tire when a third is low, same deal, and so on.

Also, it does not use the anti-lock. It uses the sensors that are installed inside the 4 tires/wheels.

Hope this explanation was not too confusing.

Good luck. :beerchug:

I just wanted to chime in again to make certain that my particular problem is understood by all.

I am not referring to the typical "Low Tire Pressure" warning that you get when a tire is actually low. In my case, this has ben working just fine (two instances, both correct).

The issue I have encountered time and time again is a warning stating "Tire Pressure Sensor Fault", meaning that there is something reported as wrong with the system itself. The dealer and I have been monitoring this since taking delivery. See my first post for the details.

Thanks for the interest and input!

Matt, I did (and still do until my next dealer visit) have the same warning message as you.

Hi Matt. :D Thanks for the explanation. I did understand that your problem was a Sensor fault (not a low pressure warning).

In this case, I was only replying to answer scootertoo21's question concerning how the TPMS system operates (and he was replying to carbonedge's reply/questions). We kind of had a bit of subject drift as the replies moved along. :hysterical:

Hope they get you repaired ASAP.

Good luck. :beerchug:

Well, count me in with the same problem...

A while back the "tire pressure sensor fault" lite up out of the blue. I stopped, visually inspected all of the tires, and they all looked OK. Keept on driving home. Killed the engine, got out my pressure gauge and measured all 4 tires - all of them were within specs.

Restarted the Engine, and low and behold, the message sensor no longer displayed the "tire pressure sensor fault"...Strange, I did not think much of it but a glitch.

Several weeks later, the same thing happened on my way home. Stopped the engire, restarted and the fault went away..

Today, as I am driving on the hwy, the same thing happened...Except this time, stopping the engine (turn it off) did not stop the message center from displaying the fault. I decided to stop at our local Ford dealer to see if they could take a quick look at it.

The technician decided that he wanted to retrain the system. Got the 1st tire done (Front driver), moved over to the 2nd tire (passenger front) and the sensor did not respond.

His conclusion, the sensor is defective. Now, I have to wait until next week to have it replaced.

Hope this helps out there..

My apologies...I guess the car charger correlation just over powered my thought process on what was actually happening with our vehicles. I should know to RTFM before I reply...speaking of which...

TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR FAULT. Displayed when a tire pressure

sensor is malfunctioning, or your spare tire is in use. For more

information on how the system operates under these conditions, refer to

Understanding Your Tire Pressure Monitoring System in the Tires,

Wheels and Loading chapter. If the warning stays on or continues to

come on, have the system inspected by your authorized dealer.

I don't guess you're running your spare at the moment...;)

Sorry to hear you're having this issue too.

I actually haven't taken any more action on this yet. We've taken two road trips in the last month and had the warning pop up several times each trip. I again am able to rule out tire pressure as a culprit, as I check and re-check the pressure religiously to ensure top gas mileage and because of this warning issue. I'm tracking this until my next scheduled oil/maintenance visit to the dealership, and we'll see what we think then.

It is very frustrating though. I wish someone at Ford could just point to a solution and implement it. If the TPMS is faulty all around, I want them to replace it while under warranty, of course. If reprogramming the system will do it, they need to try that. Some action is better than none.

I wish you luck!

If you've ruled out the other possible causes, they should replace the TPMS sensors or reprogram it first. Those are the most likely causes.

I just took delivery of a 2010 Edge AWD Ltd with nav. I had it for 5 hours when I received the "Tire Pressure Sensor Fault" warning. 5 Hours!!! The dealership got it from another, and I assume they drove it there as it had 300 miles on it. How can this vehicle fail so soon? I saw the post about Motorolla cables. I have an Iphone connected via USB and a seperate Belkin charger plugged in, but not connected to anything right now. I was driving straight and level at constant spped in 47 degree weather when it alarmed. Now the warning won't go away if either I turn the vehicle off or press the reset button. Anyone else heard about any solutions? Thanks
