I recently purchased a 09 Limited, and I notice a very high pitched "whining" noise from in the cabin when the car is on. It is not the radio, or at least it doesn't stop when the radio is off. My 2009 Ford Edge Limited (purchase April 2009 at Erinwood Ford in Mississauga) started this high frequency noise about two weeks into driving it. My attempts to have this resolved have failed flat out. So now I am stuck with a $46k SUV that is pure torture to drive when it is loud. Since Erinwood Ford and Ford Canada have been unresponsive, I have no choice but to advise all my interested friends to stick with Honda. We almost bought a second Ford but with such a serious design issue which will only affect younger drivers due to the hearing range of younger people, i would only reccomend Ford to those above age 40. Ford Canada told me that they need to have enough complaints before the problem would be fixed. I seriously wish i could return for a refund due to this one single issue. Its a shame because I LOVE LOVE LOVE everything else about the vehicle. Its not just me either. There are thousands of complaints in various forums. Noticed it more when it was low on gas, it turned out to be the fuel pump going bad, and it was new. Could it be a speaker? Could make noise even if the radio is turned down. (I see there is another thread on the 2008 Edge discussion). In fact I have just asked my salesman for a quote on a new 09/10 Edge, but this and Ford's attitude to it giving me second thoughts. I wonder of the Flex has similar problems? I had a faulty rear trunk speaker that was causing some feedback, which they replaced in the hopes that it would solve the problem. It did seem to help, but didnt eliminate the noise. So they took it back again and think it needs the radio to be replaced. I do not think it is the radio at all, as on most posts everyone has noticed that you can hear the noise outside the vehicle. However, I will let them replace the radio and go from there. My wife doesn't ever notice the noise unless I bring it up, so it isn't a showstopper, but it would be nice to not have it on those days when I prefer to drive without a radio or such. Out of ignorance and laziness, where is the fuel pump so that I can get close to it and perhaps point it out to the dealer? So far I don't hear it on my 2009 EDGE Limited. ***UPDATE***After checking again, I can hear the whine with the key in the ignition turned on, but with the engine off. I can only hear it when standing outside of the car. When inside the car and with the doors closed, I do not hear it, and that is with radio, blower, etc all turned off, so it is dead quiet in the car. When the engine is running, I can't hear it either inside or outside the car. Sounds like it is coming from the front of the car. I would not have know of this problem if i did not read this forum. Theakerr Posted January 9, 2010 Report Share Posted January 9, 2010 I have the noise intermittently on startup on my 2008 AWD Ltd. For the most part it last anywhere from 20 to 60 seconds and only occurs the 1st time i start it up in the morning. However, it is getting worse and one two occasions recently during stop and shop trips it came every time I started the engine an did not go away. Did not do it the day i took it into the dealer for a heating issue. One observation is that it continues for a few seconds after the ignition is switched off and gradually runs down - like a fan slowing to a stop, I think it is coming from the rear but to be honest it is one of those sounds that seem to come from anywhere and everywhere. Really sounds like a fuel pump but based on this forum replacing the fuel pump does not necessarily stop it. If it continues this will be a show-stopper, it is really obnoxious. So I took it to the dealer, first time, the usual NPF. I asked for a road test with the service manager and while driving it, he confirmed. Thought it was strange so we drove a new 2010 model, same issues at about the same speed. So is this what you are all talking about? If so, I emailed Ford and once I hear back will update. That's not the sound I hear. I hear it standing outside of the car with engine off, but ignition in the on position. I can also hear it inside with engine off/ignition on with blowers, radio, etc off. dmh Posted January 21, 2010 Report Share Posted January 21, 2010 I also have the 2009 Edge LTD AWD and have the high pitch whistle and the chemical smell and only 11K miles. I've had it in for the whistle which make my head hurt to no end and they replaced the thermal valve and trans cooler line. It didn't help. The sound is still there and making me crazy. I love the car but wish I would have known about this board before I purchased. The dealer said I just have to deal with the whistle, but now after reading the boards, I'm taking it back in with some knowledge. I'm going to suggest that the whistle may be the fuel pump and the smell may be the power transfer unit vent leak or transfer case?? Has anyone had any success with these items being fixed?? It also sounds sort of like what a needle playing a vinyl LP record sounds like at the end of a side. Hard to describe and also difficult to diagnose just by listening. Strange. Perhaps its a subwoofer amp going bad or some type of electrical interference getting into the audio. But it is constant and only noticeable with the volume turned down to zero. I have the same thing under the same conditions. Took it to the dealer and they indicated it was normal. Please post is you find out something different. And if so, did it fix the problem? I have the high pitch whine. It's on all the time, you can hear it from inside or outside of the car, and it makes the noise regardless of whether the car is moving or not. According to the Ford dealer, it's probably the fuel pump, and is considered "normal". The migraine headache I get when driving the car begs to to differ with the characterization of "normal".
