Brake noise

Recommended Posts

I have a 09 Edge with 4,000 miles. When I brake for the first time I get a pulsating noise that sounds like driving in snow, soft crunching noise. I do feel it in the pedal, and lately it is happening more often, just not during the initial braking. I have read about other people with the problem but no causes. I am planning on taking the car in soon, but I am worried about 'cannot duplicate' or 'that is normal for this car', coming from the mechanic so I would like to know what is wrong before I go. I like the car, I thought the Flex was nice but too big for our needs. Thanks for any info.

I have an 07 Edge with 36,800 miles on it. I just had to replace the pads, rotors and calipers on it.

And now I have to replace the tires on it as well. I'm not as impressed with this vehicle as I once was.

The brake job was $920.11 (Monro put the screws to me, so that's pretty much my fault for not shopping around) but the tires (Kost is my tire store) is getting me Goodyear all around for $129 per tire.

What happened to the calipers? That's unusual. I suspect you may have been hosed. Calipers rarely fail and when they do it's usually one, not 2 or 3 or 4.

As for tires - that's pretty normal for tires nowadays. You can get tires that last 60K or 80K but I sure wouldn't want to ride on them for that long. I'll take better ride and handling and better performance and buy tires every 25K-30K.

Monro's regional managers get on the store managers to do more CPR's (Calipers, Pads, Rotors). So, they are pretty much doing as they're told. So he told me that the calipers were bad. And I know that I got hosed.

I've already filed a complaint with both Monro and the NYS Attorney General's Office.

Update. I took the car to the dealer, rode with mechanic to verify noise. The mechanic inspected the brakes, emailed Ford, I assume in Michigan, and did a few troubleshooting checks. I drove the car, next morning car made noise again. The rep at Ford said if car makes the noise to bring it back which I will do next week. Good service other then taking a little while to figure this problem out, I think next visit they may have to spend some money to fix the problem, replace parts. I was playing around with fueling the car, and after the pump shuts off I kept slowly filling the tank, and at 4 gallons the fuel overflowed, 3 seems to be the right amount for topping off after gas hose shuts off. After I got the car back from the dealer the drivers seat goes back further which was one of my complaints about the car, seat to far forward. I do not know what they did, and I did not mention the issue to the rep, I thought that is how far back the seat went, maybe operator error. Also the mpg is reading correctly, earlier it would update about every 8 miles or so, and I thought that was how it worked, need to read the manual. The seat fix was worth the trip alone. Still like the car.
