So i have a 2009 edge limited and i want to clean the exhaust pipes, only thing though is that the climate i live in can be harsh at times and there seems to be a rough build up of something formed over the exhaust pipes to the point where you cant even see the steel anymore. I'm not really sure exactly how i can get rid of this. its like a rust build up or something has formed over them. what would be the best way to clean the exhaust pipes?

thanks

I have a 2008 with the chrome exhaust tips.

I noted last winter that the chrome quickly became tarnished and had a crusty buildup of road crud.

It seems that as soon as the road crud ( salt, etc) hits the hot pipe it dries to a crust.

The same happens over a longer period during summer.

It takes some elbow grease and some chrome cleaner (Turtle Wax) to return the shine.

If you are referring to the entire underneath including the whole exhaust system I use a diluted solution of water and Simple Green or similar cleaner in a small garden sprayer (the pressurized kind) several times a year on the entire undercarriage. While that is on there soaking you can use a long handled brush to scrub off any suspension or exhaust areas you want and then rinse it all out thoroughly. You'd be suprised how much brown/dirty gunk comes off and it really makes the underneath look clean again. As for the exhaust tips I simply use whatever wax I am using on the car at the time.
