Which cars you compare the Edge with?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I've a bit of an odd question.

I'm not much into cars. I just bought my Edge 2011for the style (and yes ok..307hp, 22" wheels and exclusiveness a bit too).

But basically really bought it and took all the hazard to ship it all the way to Switzerland because I just like that car (not on sale here: Europe you go with the Ford Kuga which does not make my heart beat at all).

Anyhow went to work with it. Workmates all think it's really cool (after telling them for months I ordered a car in the States) and then came the question I couldn't answer…so you might help me out.

In which "league" is a the Ford Edge playing?

In numbers: Bought the Edge in the US for 40'000

Now for Switzerland that's a really nice price in my opinion despite of all my follow-up cost like shipping, clearance, modification...

I checked the internet to give you an idea with other cars (some) I had in mind to buy directly in Switzerland since they are here on sale too - unlike the Edge:

Audi Q5

Cheapest model in Switzerland 61'800 CHF (=66'000 USD)

Cheapest model in US 35'200 USD

Audi Q7

Cheapest model in Switzerland 82'700 CHF (=89'000 USD)

Cheapest model in US 46'250 USD

Volvo XC60

Cheapest model in Switzerland 65'900 CHF (=58'000 USD)

Cheapest model in US 32'400 USD

Nissan Murano

Cheapest model in Switzerland 62'200 CHF (=66'900 USD)

Cheapest model in US 28'520 USD

BMW X5

Cheapest model in Switzerland 84'900 CHF (=91'400USD)

Cheapest model in US 46'300 USD

So roughly said all cars cost 2x more than in the States ("buying power" is that ugly world - or why reimport pays out).

Assuming that fact "2x" multiplier goes with Edge as well it would cost like 80'000 USD here…..

So is the Ford Edge 2011 really in competition with an Q5 or XC60 since the play in the same price range in the States?

Or which cars would you group with the Edge?

I think you nailed it. The Lexus can fit in there, but as you basically showed yourself, its on par with vehicles that cost way more. I park next to a Porsche Cayenne and BMW X6 everyday and have had several people tell me that my car is the best looking in that row. I cant disagree...

My mother drives an audi Q7 and the Edge isnt even in the parking lot of the ballpark of the audi. The shifting of the Audi is silky yet snappy. The power is smooth and refined. The cabin noise is non-existent and the handling is unbelievable.. The Edge is comparable to the 1.) Toyota Venza 2.) Chevy traverse 3.) GMC terrain 4.)hyundai santafe. I wouldnt compare the Edge to a beamer, audi, or volvo......completely different price points when optioned out. In other words, a "stripped" beamer, volvo, or audi comes close to price in a fully loaded Edge with every available option.

Can you really justify your comparison of the Edge to your mom;s Audi Q7 ? The Audi starts out at almost $ 20K more than the Edge. At least choose a Lincoln MKX for a comparison ! Do you own an Edge, or just doing a comparison by looking at the dealership, or taking a quick test drive?

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Its vastly improved for 2011 and has some compelling points. It does match up better to the Explorer, but with 2 rows, and in a similar price range (comparably equipped), it could be Edge competition.

The real compelling aspect of it are the 1)REAL 4WD systems (3 to choose from) vs. "AWD" and 2) the Air Suspension. (similar functions to Range Rover)

I priced a Laredo X 4x4 w/Air suspension and similar specs/options to the Edge that I want (FWD Limited) and it came out about $1,000 less without mentioning any incentives for the Jeep. Of course, the Edge's technology toolbag and killer MPG (relatively) give it the advantage in everyday life. But the GJC will shine on trips to Tahoe and other remote destinations. (not that the Edge won't).

I am very close to pulling the trigger on the Edge, but the GJC makes me think twice. I think I should test drive the Jeep just to make sure the Edge is the right choice.

I've test driven a Jeep Grand Cheokee Overland. While the Grand Cherokee overlaps the Edge in price, its overall character is completely different. The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a much higher steering ratio. I was doing far more hand-over-hand maneuvering in the Jeep. Also, the Grand Cherokee's ride is more nervous and body roll is significantly higher. The model I drove (Overland) had the adjustable air suspension. While the 5.7 liter V8 looks impressive on paper, it motivates the Grand Cherokee with roughly the same forward momentum as the Edge with its 3.5 liter V6 engine. This is likely due to the much higher curb weight of the Grand Cherokee. Dynamically, the Grand Cherokee and Edge are nothing alike. The Jeep feels like a "truck" whereas the Ford responds like a "crossover". Between the additional ground clearance provided by the air suspension and the multiple AWD modes I have little doubt the Grand Cherokee is the more capable off-roader. Personally, I place a significantly higher priority on on-road performance versus off-road ability.

The Ford Edge is similar in "feel" to the Mazda CX-7 and Nissan Murano.

When I was shopping for my 2011 purchase, I checked a decent number of options in the price range here in the United STates, not sure how they would change over seas. I looked at the following:

2011 Nissan Murano: Very nice interior and sporty drive, but felt a bit rougher on the road Somehow felt like there were too many options on this one, too.

2011 Ford Explorer: I liked the additional size, but felt I preferred the lighter more fuel efficient Edge

2011 Durango and Cherokee: Both feel really solid, but the V6 is a bit over-burdened with the weight. And yes, there is body-roll. These guys are still trucks despite the unibody construction. If the mileage or power was better with the V6, I would have given these more consideration.

2011 Venza: A solid vehicle, but seems lower to the ground and less engaging then the others

2011 Journey: The Pentastar V6 is a much better match in this unit. I really liked this choice: for the price, it's an excellent value. Sport drive and still fairly smooth. However, I felt the Edge was a bit more comfortable to drive.

I know this is a bit like my other post in another topic, but it might give you a few other items to consider.

I have an 11 Edge SEL.

For basically the exact same price, wife just bought an 11 Equinox. She has some features I don't have and I have some she doesn't.

She: power lift gate, remote start, sunroof

Me, MFT (has a few problems but I still like it better than what Chevy offers), bigger engine ( I believe) , ambient lighting, more room, rear seats lowered electrically/one touch

You're right on the bigger engine: She has a 4 Cylinder and you have a 6 Cylinder. And if you have the backup camera, its on the Nav screen VS. taking up 1/4 of your rearview mirror.

I looked at an X5 , Accura MDX, Lexus . One I liked and did not drive was a Cadilac SRX. I looked at a Mercedes, but forgot which one it was. I wanted the Accura bad, but it was so late coming on the market, I did not get to drive the 2010. I read they had trans problems, new 7 speed I think, and would not let it out until it was corrected.

Good move on their part, but lost some sales, I am sure. A lot of the comparison cars were premium fuel only. I am glad now that the Lincoln MKX is reg fuel. Like the car except the seats get hard after about 50 miles. The back seats are actually better cushioned.

No, she has an LTZ 6 cylinder. Her rear view camera is also on her Nav screen

I bought the Edge, my daughter (with 3 kids), bought the Acura MDX--both same color as it turns out. The MDX is slightly tighter in turns and aggressive driving but no major difference. I have some features and she has others but the main feature I miss on hers is the BLIS system, very useful as it turns out. Her nav system with the stick mouse is slower than the sync touch screen when actually trying to add addresses and just navigating the screens. She has the power liftgate, I don't--but could have gotten it with the Limited vs my SEL. Her sunroof is real small and the Vista roof is nicer. Of course she has the 3rd row seating she needs. But my back seat is a little roomier than the MDX. The leather is nicer in MDX tho. She paid about $12K more. And the MFT is nicer with the screens on the dash with the speedometer. Pretty similar cars but I would take the edge again, even tho I have had some Sync issues.

Oh, forgot the back seat features of the MDX. Rear DVD is centrally located and flips up and down so its out of the way. Bluetooth headsets are included (2) for the kids. The audio is rear controllable as is the rear blower and air temp so the MDX has a 3 station AC, (driver, passenger, rear) for both temp and blower. Thats pretty nice for the kids in the back.

I was after the AWD candy red sport. Wife wanted that color but we could only come up with a limited in that color at the time. I also wanted the garage door opener and the adaptive cruise control which were not available on the Sport. So, we got the Limited and have been happy with it. We wanted to be able to flat tow whatever we got behind our motor home and had narrowed the choices to the Edge, Grand Cherokee, or Buick Enclave. Since the latter two bumped our 5000# hitch limit, the Edge won. Equiped to tow and 1/2 tank of gas it weighs about 4500#.
