Something I Did to Protect The Hood On A Trip

Recommended Posts

I have a 2011 Bordoux red LTD and I covered the front edge of the hood with 2 3 inch of blue painters tape covered with black duct tape (from right to keft). It worked! protected the front 6 inches of the hood from stone chips and bugs and it's easy to remove, Plan to re-apply a new covering for the ride home.

Glad to hear it worked for you once. Painter's tape is not too thick, so what you may find is that a stone could still penetrate that tape barrier and still make a mark. It will give you some protection at the least I guess. You may have to use Goo-gone, Iso propyl alcohol or a light solvent to remove the adhesive, but that's not a big deal.

Only the painters tape touches the hood - The duct tape directly covers the painters tape. Removal leaves no residue and it holds in the rain. Overall it lasts for several days and does protect from the bugs and stones.

Car show guys have been doing this for ages when not trailering to meets.

Get the 14 day tape if you are going on a long trip, it removes easier. ALWAYS buy 3M (Scotch) Brand tape, no other company's adhesive can compare and you don't want to cheap out on your paint.

We use the 3M Blue Painters tape all the time when we transport cars to auto events/shows. Usually we cover the front half of the car and mirrors. We usually only do this when we are taking cars across the desert from Phx to California events. Never considered doing to my Edge Sport, but then again, I've never taken it on a road trip yet.

I'm picking my 13 sport up in Illinois next week and driving to Southern California (2000 miles highway).... Does anyone think this will be worth it? Fellow sport owners how is your front end doing after highway driving? I will be installing the clear bra 2 days after i make it to california... i wish there was a place i trust in illinois to do it but hey. So my question is still.... Is it worth it?

Tape it. You'll be glad you did when you're getting your clear bra installed, And just like Blankster did, put a layer of duct tape over the lower valance. We tape up the front of our MR2 when we take it to Watkins Glenn and our front lower valance looks as nice as the rest of the car. Over 2000 miles there's plenty of time for a few rocks to beat up your new vehicle.

Ok I did it! It took almost 3 hours but i took my time and did it right so i didn't have to deal with any coming off over my 2000 mile journey. It took 2 and barely starting a third roll of the scotch 3m painters tape. Very easy to remove left no residue at all. Best part and you can see from a few of the pictures, I didn't have to scrub any bugs off anything but the windshield. The a- pillars had maybe 2 bugs on each of them. No scratches, chips, or bugs to ruin my new paint and now i have the Xpel ultimate clear bra every where there was blue tape plus the rear bumper guard in the film. I'll post a picture of that on the clear bra thread. Highly recommend both the clear bra and 3m tape for a long trip if you don't have that. Any Questions fire away! The finial pictures were 20 mins after i made it to my driveway and said hello to the wife, temperature ranged from 94 degrees in Las vegas and 23 degrees at 0 dark thirty in Colorado with a little moisture on the roads, the tape stayed on strong everywhere no issues.
