Forcing a reboot

Wilsons66604- Glad my tip helped. There IS a straight "reboot" app for MFT/ MLT that can go on a usb & does NOT need vehicle restart. I just plug it in while driving- with in 2 secs it forces reboot & I unplug & put it back in the glove box. I recevied it from a Ford IT tech. He is perplexed as to why it is not built in or made avail to gen public - but is out trumped by the higher ups. He also states that they had to tie it to an indiv vin before he could release it to me & others. So it is not like I could just post it for others to use. He was the one that stated it was safe to use the Sirius patch delayed reboot. The sync forum refuses to answer why it can not be made avail to wide public & then screens posts that go into detail. Hope that helps.

Because somewhere a manager is scared that it would cause a PR problem or that it could cause some problem if someone did it while driving. And nobody is willing to go over their heads to get permission. Welcome to corporate America.

I applied the USB reboot update before leaving work today. This forced SYNC into "scheduled maintenance" as desired. Once maintenance completed, my phone connected then dropped - but no biggie, I just used the touchscreen to reconnect. As for Sirius Travel Link - this was a partial success. I got real time weather and ski information back online. However, fuel prices, movie and sports info were still no-go and would not update. This is where I should have left well enough alone. When I pulled into the garage at home I inserted the USB drive again, uploaded and shut down. When I restarted I had no audio and a black screen - same symptoms that recently required a battery disconnect to remedy. I'm going to try a fuse-pull tomorrow to attempt a reset instead of a battery disconnect because if possible, I'd rather not lose my trip odo/fuel econ/MTE info.

Please be aware that this reboot does cause the screen to go black for what seems like forever. It scared me a few times but it finally showed me the "scheduled..." screen. Be patient. The 2.11 update took my car 70 minutes to complete. I think I got an slow module when they built mine 1 yr ago.

No reboot has fixed my problems with Sirius. I think Sirius is a joke & will be extinct 2 yrs. Or less

Yes, thanks. I'm pretty certain that this is the black screen of death - again. The key indicators are no screen warm up upon entry and no audio (unlike during a maintenance phase). I'll post results later this morning.

Edit: Pulled fuse 67 (Focus) and it restored the MFT/Nav system. I reapplied the USB reboot and restarted which resulted in SYNC maintenance. Unfortunately, Sirius Travel Link is back to where I started - no services except traffic. Weather and ski information are gone again along with everything else. Well, at least I know which fuse to pull without wiping my trip/fuel econ info if/when I get into another black screen of death situation.

Hi,

I'm a new Ford Edge 2011 owner and found another way to reboot sync, The following video:

will show you another way. I looked into the fuse pulling and it seemed rather risky and the video shows a much easier and simpler way. I hope this video helps you and others. One final thing, I didn't make this video and if the solution offered works for you, please thank the guy who discovered it.

P.S. When I did what the video suggested, it did wipe my navigation but not my stereo / sat radio preferences.

Awesome... thank you sooo much. I spent most of the day with dealers trying to get answers and fixed it myself after watching this video. I did thank the vid owner and I thank you for posting the link for the fix.

Thanks Richy, I'm always happy to help where I can.

I had a simular problem with a cadi. after a 12volt cooler discharged the battery over night, the car was jump started the bext morning, and nothing worked except the basic engine controls. I took it to cadi. garage where they disconnected both the + and - cables from the battery , and shorted the cables together for ten seconds and reconnected the battery. that solved the broblem.

Shorting of the cables together discharged any stray (compacitor) voltages' in the computer causing it to do a hard reboot .

All you would have to do after that is reload your radio stations and phone contacts.

I also had a problem with my MFT where the home screen got corrupted and nothing worked, did the above and corrected my problem.

Well Ford got me a reboot app but told me it is going to wipe everything out. They have already asked me to remove the phone pairings to try to stabilize the system but now I am wondering if this app is worth the trouble if I have to reset all those settings in nav, audio etc. I might try it this weekend when I have time to go through and reset everything if need be. If it does wipe everything I may give your version a shot.

I have had my my Edge for about two months now and in that time the MFT has been completely dead longer than it has worked. I became frustrated with pulling the fuse and I decided to put it on a switch.

I used a add-a-circuit like akirby pictured earlier, but I didn't have to go through all the trouble akirby suggested. I left out what would be the fuse feeding the original ciruit in the add-a-circuit and only inserted the fuse into the new circuit. I extended the tail and connected it to a micro switch I got at Radio Shack. I then ran a wire from the switch back to the add-a-circuit where I connected the wire to the orginal circuit fuse slot on the add-a-circuit using a spade. Be sure to verify that you aren't using the the source side of the circuit when you insert the spade. This process essentially diverted cirtcuit to the switch and return it back.

I choose to do it this way so that it is easily removable and I won't have to listen to the dealer tell me that my mod broke the system. I can now flip the switch and let it sit without having to dig around in the foot well. I will see if I can get a picture tonight or tomorrow that I can share.

After pulling fuse 29 a couple of times after I first got the car, that's essentially the same thing I did as well except that I ran the wires over to the glove-box and mounted the switch there. It makes it soooo much easier than pulling the fuse - especially when you're driving down the road. No need to pull over and turn off the car, restart it, fumble with a fuse.

I mean really, who would design and build any kind of a computer system without a reset switch? Worst case, put it in a location where you have to push in a paper clip or something.

A car company who never wrote such complicated software before?

Sync never needed a reboot.

In addition to your comment- Have to wonder if it was a little more of a "corporate power control thing" since the reboot on command feature wasn't built in & the true reboot app to do it on command was not made public to all. There has been no mention of a reboot -"on command” that was added to the new performance upgrade. As stated before- I am an owner that requested & received the true reboot app-although told it was locked to my VIN. I requested it be made available to all- obviously that never happened. I asked if Sirius patch was safe to use again just for the delayed reboot -I was told by IT tech it would not harm. SO if owners use a hack vs. corporate officially providing- a corporate PR decision is accomplished.

Just in time. My Touch system went stupid again today.

I plugged in a USB stick with the DelayedReboot file on it. It installed in about 10 seconds. Turned off the car and waited 30 seconds. When I restarted, the system rebooted!

To make sure it wasn't a fluke, I did it again. This is will be a big help.

Here are the instructions included in the zip file...Enjoy! :happy feet:

UPDATE: I made a slight mod to the install so it would not rename the files. This will allow you to keep the USB stick in the car and use it over and over again without reloading it.

When the download is complete, unzip the patch to a flash drive.

[NOTE: Be sure to unzip the patch directly onto the flash drive, not into an existing folder.]

--INSTALLING THE REBOOT SOFTWARE IN YOUR VEHICLE:

1. Start your vehicle and turn on the audio system.

2. Insert your flash drive (containing the patch) into your vehicle's USB port.

3. The installation process will begin automatically, and should take about 10 seconds to complete. A dialog box will let you know when the patch has been successfully installed. When the installation is complete, remove your flash drive from the USB port.

4. Turn off your vehicle's ignition for at least 30 seconds so that the system can reboot.

5. After at least 30 seconds have passed, start your vehicle again. Your vehicle's screen may be black for up to a minute. Then the "Performing scheduled system maintenance" screen will appear, and will last for a few minutes.

I have been using your reboot stick on my car for a new months now, it worked great on 2.11. Since updating to 3.0.2 though, it doesn't seem to work. It does seem to make the system reload some things, but it does not pop up the performing scheduled maintenance screen anymore. I ave tried a few times with no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Correct- You shouldn't have to BUT your most certainly MUST in some cases!! Readers- review the several posts at the sync my ride forum that mention that need. The 800 cust sup STILL says pull fuse as there solution to issues. THAT is what you should not HAVE to do! AND yes- MY reboot app- the one I received for an IT tech- still DOES work. That is the shame that some reboot apps did get out there before the apparent stop that practice & others do not have the ease I do to just plug in- wait 3 seconds & remove. There should be a true reboot in the sub menu not a fuse pull on Luxury Linc.

I haven't seen anything here that would indicate the need for regular reboots. Under what circumstances is that necessary with 3.02?

I'd agree there probably is no need for REGULAR reboots, but I wouldn't say you'll never need a reboot with 3.02. Two days after installing the 3.02 update the Sirius portion of the radio in my Edge went dead and no amount of fiddling around with buttons would fix it. Rebooting the system by pulling fuse 29 brought it back to life and it's been working fine since.

As a Sync Specialist who teaches classes at a dealer for customers i have already had to use the reboot thumb

drive on three vehicles to get the system back to work. One was mine after about a week and a half. The other

was on a brand new 2013 explorer. So as you can see the system is much better but still has bugs.

I had similar problems my MFT SYNC in that about every three weeks after installing the REV 3 up date, my radio would take a big dump where nothing would function as advertised. I would have to do a factory reset to correct the problems. I called the sync customer service rep. in Detroit and was asked for my VIN number they came back and said then when my car was built it had a few software file problems that Rev 3 did not address and that I should take it back to the Ford dealer and have the computer REFLASHED. The service rep went thru my car and found three files that needed to be corrected. The car now performs as advertised, no more problems.

This is the technique I have used since I bought my 2011 Edge. I've done it many times and it doesn't erase all my settings. When I do it, the ones I do have to consistently redo are the following:

  1. Adjust Bass, Mid & Treble again.
  2. Turn on the back up camera grid lines.
  3. Turn on RDS in the radio settings.

But that's it. All other settings including stuff like radio presets & nav stuff is all there.

The USB option is intriguing, but what would really be great is to have a stable version of MFT. I know, I'm dreaming.

BTW, here's the first unconfirmed rumor that we will get a new update in August:

OMG, I love it!

I just tried this on my 2013 Ford Escape Titanium with 3.5.1. I keep having bluetooth connection issues to my phone. It will occasionally just stop connecting to my phone to the point where i have to do a full reset of sync to even get it to re-pair. This usually happens when I forget to enable bluetooth on my phone until I am in the car and sync is already trying to connect. When that happens it almost always completey hoses sync/bluetooth. I get so pissed every time I do this, because I know what will happen. It is just habbit for me. Sometimes I will get lucky and sync will crash on it's own and reboot, but usually I don't have the patience to wait a day or two for that to happen. BTW, this pretty much started when my android phone was updated to 4.2.2. Prior to that, I really didn't have any issues enabling bluetooth on my phone after starting the car and havinging sync connect to it. I even got a new phone a month ago that also has 4.2.2 and it has the same issue.

I just tried the USB delayed_reboot method and it actually worked. So much faster to get things working again than a hard reset.

Seeing that was posted on the Focus forum and I don't recall any complaints on the Edge forum about a clock issue, I wonder if the update might be just for that car line and it's specific issue.
