What made you choose your Edge?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone..

We, Edge enthusiasts, know why we bought and like our vehicle...

So I thought, in response to all the reviews and critics, we could state why we bought our Edge and what makes the Edge stand apart from its competitors.

It appears that actual owners are far more enthusiastic about the Edge than the car critics - here is your chance to state why you love your Edge and what made you choose it over its rivals.

We all know the Edge aint perfect - so tell us why you love the Edge.

Thanks all.. looking forward to reading all the replies...

PS - If you are a car critic reading this - take special note of the replies!!!

Before the Edge, I had a Mazda RX-8. Whenever my wife and I would want to go someplace, we reallized that there wasn't much room for goodies from shopping, etc. We go to the beach at least twice a year and take at least 3 other pretty good road trips to visit friends. Eventually it became too much of a hassle trying to figure out how to pack the car with luggage and leave room for everything we picked up on our journey.

I recently became an Allstate Insurance Agent. One day a gentleman and his wife agreed to roll over his two million dollar (plus) IRA/retirement fund into some Allstate products. I wanted to take them to lunch as a small thank you but couldn't do the driving (8 was too small). It was very awkward to say, "Thank you so much for your trust in me and my company with your future. I would love to take you to lunch...but...can you drive?"

So, between that and not being able to take the 8 on long road trips, it was time to make a change.

My dad is retired Ford Aerospace (Project Development) so I have always had some type of Ford/Lincoln/Volvo/Mazda etc product. I saw the Edge on a TV commercial and thought I would test drive one.

Once I drove it, the decision was made.

When I began my search for a replacement for my 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis LS, I would have considered another 'new' Grand Marquis, but with my move from Colorado to North Dakota next year, I needed something more appropriate for the 'north country' winters.

I researched all the competition in this vehicle class with three 'must-have' criteria, and landed on the Edge because it met and/or exceeded all three.

1) Must have AWD

2) Must have comfortable ride on road trips (I take a lot of road trips).

3) Must have gas mileage that equals or exceeds my Grand Marquis.

The Edge was the only CUV to meet or exceed my needs.

The Edge also had many features I like above the rest.

1) No third row seats.

2) Awesome styling.

3) Vista Roof.

4) Quiet

5) Enough horsepower to enter the interstate.

6) Lots of cargo room.

7) My 19yo son thinks it "cool". :shades:

The EPA gas estimates for my Grand Marquis are almost identical to the Edge. I can get up to 30mph on the hywy and 18mph in the city when I keep my foot light. :yup: So I expect to do almost as well with my Edge after the break-in period, and switching to synthetic oil.

Is the Edge perfect?......nothing is!.....but it come a lot closer than the competition.

It helps if I answer my own question!!

Actually, I wasn't so sure I wanted an Edge. I have family at OAC, therefore eligible for an A plan price. But I was driving a sport coupe and I was not sure I would like the size or drive of the Edge. I had read the Edge reviews - and I thought I would put it off til 2008. However, some friends expressed some interest in my car and wanted to purchase if I was going to sell. Thus, I went for an Edge test drive.

Well - that sealed the deal for me. It felt awesome to drive, better than my coupe. I loved the look, the power, speed and interior.

Its been 3 months, and about 2400 miles - I love driving the Edge, the BAMR, satellite radio, touchscreen NAV - I think its an amazing first year vehicle -

My only "bummer" is the lack of the power liftgate - not because the door is heavy or difficult - but only because it would have been nice to have.

I initially thought I would like the CX-7, Murano or RAV4 - but the Edge has them beat - the Edge is a looker.

We needed a vehicle to accomodate our new baby and the wifes Jetta just wasn't goint to work. Plus that thing was a time bomb ready to blow up. She was in love with the Murrano, but after looking at the Edge, GMC Acadia, Murrano and the CX-7, we chose the Edge. The look did it. I hate the feel of Nissans CVT(or lack of feel). CX-7 seemed small, etc. X-plan helped too!

Edgy,

Some of this you may recall from when we first bought our Edge at the end of May.....we're the ones who traded in our 2005 Murano for the Edge!

We test drove the Mazda CX-7 and Mazda CX-9. I didn't care for the ride of the CX-7 (too stiff), plus it only had a 4-cylinder engine (albeit turbocharged). I liked the ride of the CX-9, but it felt underpowered...and the price was a bit more than I wanted to pay. I checked online very briefly and was intrigued with the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, but they were too pricey to even test drive. So...it came down to the two Mazda models and the Edge. My wife wanted the CX-7 because of the price, but, as I mentioned, I didn't like the ride.

Actually, I had completely forgotten about the Edge until after our Mazda test drives...and we were already home when the "light bulb" went on and I remembered the Edge...so we ran out and test drove one.

I loved the ride of the Edge, and the engine power felt just about perfect. The fit and finish of it seemed just fine to me (and still does, by the way). Compared pricewise to the two Mazdas, it fell right in between the CX-7 and CX-9.

Again...I love the power and ride of the Edge. The navigation system's pretty cool, too, but not that different than the Murano's (which might have been a bit better, actually).

Sure...there are some minor quibbles I have with the Edge...I had to turn the headrests around so my wife and I didn't constantly bump the backs of our heads against them as we drove. I, too, wish they'd have had a power liftgate for the 2007 model year...and wish the Sync system had been available. (I'm 6' tall, so the liftgate handle doesn't bother me...or my wife, who's 5'4"). I wish the seatbacks were power adjustable...I wish both cupholders were full size....

But....and I'll say it again....I think Consumer Reports got it wrong with the Edge! They seem to prefer the harsher rides of the Honda and Acura cars....I guess ride comfort doesn't matter much to them.

Hi! I am not yet an Edge owner but I have been keeping up to date with the interesting posts on the forum. I really like the Edge but I am having difficulty making a final decision. I am probably driving the dealers crazy because I have taken the Edge on quite a few test drives to date. To date all of the new cars I have purchased have been Honda Accords. I really like the Accord but wanted to try something different like a CUV. The main reason is I have a handicapped son who is in a wheel chair and I thought having the room in the back would be more convenient that a trunk of a car. It is getting difficult lifting the wheelchair in and out of the trunk.

To date I have driven the CRV, Highlander, Pilot, RAV4, Outlander and while I liked the RAV 4 and Outlander the Edge stands out and the one I liked most. The one concern I have is the Edge is larger and different to drive than a car like the Accord. I am concerned that I will not get used to the different feel of the Edge and end up being disappointed. Has anyone had simlar feelings when making their decsion.

Thanks for your help.

I had a 1999 Expedition that I absolutely loved. I loved the height and the feeling of being in control of the road. I purchased the truck when my kids were young and I needed it to cart around them and their friends without having to take two vehicles. I hated to get rid of it, but with both kids older and driving themselves around I didn't need that big of a vehicle. So I started looking and man did I look. I drove myself and everyone around me nuts. Everything I drove just didn't fit all my needs.....so my boyfriend told me I should look at the Edge. The BAMR sold it for me. I am a sunroof person. I have the windows and roof open as much as possible and love the wind blowing through my hair. The controls on the steering wheel was another desire and the Edge had it. I like the dual heat/ac. I like the look of the dash. The safety reports were also a huge selling point. I love that I am up high, not quite as high as before, but not sitting of the road either. I also love that the Edge, like my Expedition, is roomy, nothing feels close or uncomfortable.

My only issue with my Edge is like others the head rests. I like to have my seat back straight up and this is not very comfortable with the headrest. I have found that if I notch the seat one notch back it still is straight enough with pushing into the back of my head.

Overall I think that it is a great vehicle and I love the attention it gets. I also like this forum. I have never been involved in something like the forum but I'm still addicted to it. I may not be looking every day now but it is several days a week. I enjoy "talking" with everyone and I'm glad I joined!

Dave,

I had a Nissan Altima prior to buying my Expedition and several Nissan (Datsuns) prior to that. When I told my boyfriend I wanted to get the Expedition he said, "you don't want something that big". He was SO wrong. I got in my Expedition and never looked back. You will quickly get the feel for driving an Edge...go for it! :yup: Although, I miss my Expedition, my Edge is quickly making me forget my big truck.

Hello - I drove a toyota solara coupe - that I loved to drive - it was my dream car when I bought it in 2001

An AWD Edge drives BETTER than my toyota - like you I was used to cars and worried I would not like or could get comfy in a bigger vehicle.

Well - driving the Edge is awesome, nothing better - don t miss my car one bit.

GO FOR IT!!!

We spent allot of time looking around and testing the various vehicels out there.

We are not brand biased and have a Chrysler PT, Ford Explorer and Chevrolet Monte SS in the laneway.

We buy based on the best fit for what we are looking for.

My wife is really going to be the principal driver of the Edge (or at least that is how the search started out)

The criteria was fun, safe, sharp, responsive, good power, excellent bad weather manners, good visibility and reliable.

She wants a vehicle she can take anywhere in any weather and feel safe while enjoying the trip.

Boring boxes like the Pilot fell off the list real quick as did the Hylander.

We checked out the Nitro, Patriot, MDX, CX-7, CX-9, Acadia, Outlook, Torrent, Vue, Equinox, Escape, Lime Charger R/T (not sure what happened there - just a cool car), CRV and RAV4

The Nitro was the early winner before the Edge came out and then she drove the Nitro and was very disappointed. The leather was very poor quality and the handling was something Dodge should be ashamed of. It was downright poor driving. Our 88 and 91 Jeeps drove better. She really had her heart set on the Nitro until the test drive.

After taking the grand tour and reading reports, surfing the forums, asking owners we had pretty much narrowed the field.

Then she drove an Edge and that was that. She felt it was built for her, fit her like a glove and she felt as comfortable driving it as she did the Monte SS and as safe as the Explorer for abd weather. First time she saw the Edge she put it off as a Car on Steroids but she didn't take the time to look close. Her first comment turned out to be oh so true - it is a car, nice car at that on steroids. That is what I think makes it such a great car.

She had me change her desktop on her laptop the the Edge from the Nitro and I knew that was that.

The hardest part was deciding on the colour. Originally she wanted Amethyst but then when it came time she changed her mind and had the dealer locate a Redfire equipped her way and 2 days later was driving it.

So to end up with an Edge after all we went through to pick this vehicle says allot for the vehicle. Our decision was not take lightly and we looked at everything.

By the way our dealer was superb and really went the extra mile to earn our business!

My inspiration to get an Edge was less pragmatic and more emotional desire. I liked it! I had one for a three-day rental in Vegas. The rental was a loaded SEL+, AWD, BAMR, auto air, memory seats & mirrors, leather, everyting but the Nav. I liked the decently powerful engine, the versatile and multi-configurable console box, the easy fold rear seats, and of course, the look! Pretty slick! I came back home, did my homework for a day, and traded in my 2003 Explorer for the ready-to-go Light Sage SEL+ AWD off the showroom floor. I was in and out of the dealer in two hours. Sweet!

Btw, I've been back to Vegas a couple more times and I've had a Edge rental every time. The last one was Blazing Copper with BAMR and NeverLost. Like having my "own" car waiting for me when I get off the plane. Thank you Jeeves.

I have to say, it was a rainy Saturday. I got bored and went out to see what was new. I had not even heard of the Edge. I was not shopping for a car - just looking.

Drove one. My heart went Boom! I figured out how to buy one.

I love the way it handles, the comfortable seats, the great room in the back for the dogs, all the creature comforts - yes, I got the SEL+ AWD with Nav and Sirius.

It is just plain enjoyable!

I have a chronic back problem and needed a better riding vehicle than my 05 Escape. I had researched for several months and test drove the Murano, Mazda CX9 and the Edge. The result? The Murano had no chance, as noisy inside as my Escape and too stiff a ride. The CX9 was great, plenty of power, comfortable for my back and quiet, but just a little on the stiff side. Then I drove the Edge and it was a no brainer! The ride was near perfect for me, smooth and controlled and really quiet inside! In fact the only quibble I have is that the seat cushions are a tad short for my legs, but not a deal breaker.

Picked it up on June 29 and already have 1500 miles on it! :happy feet:

Was tired of POS Mercecedes 240 4-matic (which we had since new in 03). Needed AWD, liked the looks of Edge and it is so comfortable in every way. Hands down a great vehicle. I want to trade in my 06 Mustanf GT Vert for another one, but wife says calm down I can drive her Edge whenever I want.

Wish they had a cover for cargo area like many other vehicles, but we love the CUV.

Choose Egde over Lincoln for price.

I had been looking into getting a Ford Expedition and had gone to several dealers, but the price was so over the top. I didn't want another Explorer because the ride was so bad and even my son was complaining about it in the back seat.

I drove a new Explorer at another dealer hoping that the ride had improved and it had not and as I got out I spotted the Edge. I didn't even know what it was or have ever heard of one. I got in and saw the BAMR and the comfortable seats. Then we took it for a test drive and no longer did the passenger feel as though their kidneys were being shifted around. It was like the angels were singing. This is what I had been wanting all along and didn't know it.

Well, it was time to replace my wife’s ’04 Expy. Tough vehicle to replace, since it was a fully loaded Eddie Bauer with 4x4, rear captain’s chairs, and 3rd row seat. She loved driving a “big” vehicle and did not want to give up the room, so I went looking at the ’07 EB Expys. Now I’m telling you, if price and gas mileage are no problem, then the ’07 Expy is the vehicle for you! It was head and shoulders above our ’04, but, the price and gas mileage just made me look closer at the Edge. Once I drove the Edge, I was sold, of course the price and gas mileage didn’t hurt either. Now it was time to sell the wife. She really did not want to give up the 3rd row seat and loved “riding high” but with the kids going off to college (1 next year and 1 the year after) she was willing to give the Edge a try. And boy, is she glad she did! She loves the ride and the comfort, roomy interior and reclining rear seats for the boys, but the only thing she misses is the cooled seats, especially here in DC with the charcoal interior (yes, I know the Lincoln has them, but the MKX is just a tad too expensive). With my ’06 Fusion and her ’07 Edge, Ford really has 2 quality vehicles! Oh yeah, we have had the Edge for 45 days and already have 3,000 miles on it including a trip to Myrtle Beach with 4 passengers and luggage. We averaged 23 MPG which included areas in North Carolina where you could set the cruise control at 79 MPH. :beerchug:

We were looking for a car that:

1. Allowed comfort for my long legs. Another 1-2" of leg room would be even better.

2. Allow us to tow up to 3500 pounds.

3. Allow us to carry large objects.

4. Maintain a comfortable ride and have most of the options were desired.

5. Allow us to carry two people in the back seat in relative comfort.

6. Have sufficient power yet, reasonable fuel economy.

7 Good styling and quality workmanship.

We went for the Edge Plus and are very happy with it. We have yet to find a fit and finish problem.

I enjoyed my suburban but got tired of the truck size parking and being the bus for everyone. We have a family of long legged people and going to something smaller was my dream until we found the Edge. My son says it has more leg room in it than the suburban did. I love the ride and the gas tank isn't eating me alive either. We just returned from about a 300 mile trip and got 24 mpg at 72 mph. I have about 1200 miles on my edge already.......we live 20 miles from anywhere.......and my husband drives it to work at least 2 days a week 80 miles round trip on the highway. We have had 2 issues the service people have dealt with and fixed. Our a/c didn't cool as fast or as well as we thought it should.......needed a/c stuff......sorry, can't remember the name of it..........and we had to have brake rotors changed out......they shimmied when we stopped. I have not looked back for my suburban AT ALL. Everyone tried to tell me I would........no regrets here.

Previous car: 2000 Taurus Wagon with 186,000 km on it.

I'm over 6 foot, as is my teenage son. My wife and daughter aren't shorties either.

Wanted a vehicle that gave good value for the money, was roomy and comfortable on the highway (I commute over 100km/day to work), and was roomy enough for my large kids to be comfortable in the back.

Looked at the RAV4, the Mazda CX-7, the Subaru Outback, the Honda CRV.

Liked the RAV4 and its reliability record, well equipped at the price. But it lacked personality.

My daughter fell in love with the CX-7, but I wasn't taken by the comfort, or the fact that its 4cyl. needed premium fuel.

Love the Subaru, but servicing could be an issue as dealers are few and far between.

Hated the CRV (personal taste); ugly interior, uncomfortable, poorly equipped at the price.

Didn't care much for the Edge's styling when I first saw it, but it slowly grew on me.

Sat in it in the dealer: loved the interior, the comfort of the seats and the roomy back seat.

Test drove it: smooth, responsive, quiet, comfortable - perfect for the commute and trips with the family.

It isn't perfect, though I don't have any major issues with it: I don't mind the headrests or the glare.

Overall I'm very satisfied with my SEL AWD (Light Sage, roof rails, charcoal interior).

And part of me likes the idea it's built right here in Canada.

Open your minds, critics. The Japanese build a great product, but they're not to everyone's taste.

Buying a car is a very personal choice, and taste is a big issue.

There clearly is a market for a vehicle like this, and I for one am very happy I bought it.

I'm a long-time Ford SUV buyer. I've owned 1992, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2003 Explorers. Living in snow country and living at the top of a hill, 4WD was important and I just stuck with what was working. By 2005, gas had reached $3.00 and I began looking for an alternative to my Explorer V-8 which was getting less than 12 mpg. Since Ilease my vehicles, it was time to get another one and I chose the Freestyle AWD. It proved to be a good alternative to a standard SUV, but the mileage was not so much better--about 15-20 mpg, and the CVT transmission and low HP engine drove me nuts. I made a vow not to get another Freestyle. It was long, noisy (mainly because of the engine and the transmission) and seemed like a thrown together car. As my lease was coming to an end in May, i considered other vehicles. i drove the Murano and a couple others, but there was nothing there that made an impression on me. Then I drove the Edge.

The Edge had plenty of torque--something the V-8 Explorer didn't have as much of, and it was quiet. So quiet that it seemed like I was in a totally refined machine. It also looked modern and good. It also handled like a European sports sedan (on par with my Acura TL), so I was sold. I ordered my 07 Copper-colored machine with chrome wheels and satellite radio and haven't been upset since. It's a wonderful car. I didn't get the expensive options like the BAMR or the leather upholstery (don't like leather and hate sunroofs), and just went with the SEL model with satellite radio. I'm pleased when I consider a Murano equipped much worse was going to be $5,000 more.

The car mags pan this car because of its weight, but it feels solid and is big enough to haul my clients around (I'm also an insurance agent with Nationwide) and yielded me 25 mpg on a recent trip to South Carolina. Not bad.

Here's the long story:

http://www.fordedgeforum.com/index.php?showtopic=914&hl=

But I'll try to sum it up much shorter. The Edge offers the looks and features of a luxury car, but without the luxury price tag. It rides like a car, yet still gives you the safety with the height and size. Finally, it is a sporty CUV/SUV that doesn't look like you are carting around the kids soccer team, and there aren't a million of them on the road (at least not yet, that is).

Great job with the Edge, Ford!
