Speed Governor at 110?

I let my twin brother drive my Edge Sport while I was in the passenger seat. I've done a few common performance mods and he wanted to push the limit a bit. Despite my objection he decided to floor it on a long stretch of freeway. There is no doubt in my mind after this episode that my car is governed at approx. 110 mph. The tach was somewhere around 4500-4800 rpm from what I could tell from my angle. My brother backed off and tried again to break this barrier four times but each time I could tell that the electronics basically cut the injectors or something similar and there was no going faster. Has anyone else run into this situation? If so, what can we do to bypass the nanny system?

Any ideas and thoughts would be greatly appreciated!! By the way, I really gave my brother a rough time about the speeding issue. I told him that we should do any future experiments on a closed course with a professional driver. ;)

Thanks!!!!!

Well there's always a reason the OEMs limit top speed, and it's nothing to do with speeding laws. Most often the speed is limited by the tire ratings, but it can also be because of cooling capacity, driveline durability, brake performance or even silly things like carbon monoxide intrusion. Unless you know specifically what the reason for the limit is, you're putting yourself at risk by bypassing it.

Good answer but we like to be able to get the most out of performance gear we put on our vehicles. The tires are high speed low profile sport tires. The car is called a Sport model for goodness sake. I've installed a forced cold air intake with an open air filter, a low restriction exhaust, and SCT flash tuner with a dyno proven tune, lowering springs for lower center of gravity and better handling, and better brakes to stop faster. I could see it governed at a 125-130 mph range but 110 is just silly and a waste of capability in a good car. What if I want to go to the local drag strip and run the Edge? With the performance enhancements I've made a 110 limit is just going to screw me over, no doubt. There has to be a way to reprogram the computer in order to bypass the limit. Someone else out there other than me must want to go past 110 in their $45,000 Edge Sport! This is just silly nanny stuff in my opinion.

If it can be done it would be in the SCT tuner. And we all know you're not really going to be taking it to a track every time you want to go over 110, just like you didn't the first time.

Like Waldo said, there are lots of different reasons that Ford would limit the top speed (more than just the tire rating) and you simply don't know enough about the vehicle to know that it's safe above that speed.

Going that fast in a sports car on public roads is dangerous. Doing it in a tall crossover that wasn't designed to go that fast in the first place is just asking for trouble. I realize you probably don't care but I had to get that off my chest.

I respect that you needed to get that off your chest and I certainly respect your opinion. I honestly have no problem with the way you feel. You are right about certain things. I am probably asking for trouble on public roads. However, there is a strip very close to where I live and I honestly plan to see what I can do with a Ford crossover when its put up against other cars that might be in a similar category or even some that are out of the category. I would like to think that a good showing would make other Edge Sport owners proud of both their car and of Ford in general. I will probably run the strip once a month during the warmer months. I've put a good bit of time and money into making my Edge SPORT more sporty and in a straight line the vehicle should easily make it to 135 or so. I doubt that will ever happen in a quarter mile distance without a couple of turbos bolted on the front and back end, but in a country where we are supposed to be free to make our own choices I just am not happy with the computer limiting my speed. The computer had no idea that I was not at a sanctioned drag strip trying to win a few bucks in a race.

That was the first time my fairly new Edge has been that fast and will most likely be the last time it will go that fast on a public road. Keep in mind this was on an interstate where there is at least 3 miles of a straight and gentle downhill road that was free from cars as far as we could see. I will however scold my brother about his actions and his bad decision making in general. I'm sure he will appreciate the brotherly criticism. :club:

Since my initial post, I have spoken with a tuning company who is making the maps and the SCT flash tuner does have the capability to remove the speed limit restriction for anyone else who might be interested.

Thanks to both of you for your input. :grouphug:

Did you go to a custom shop for your exhaust?

Or a off the shelf cat back?

I still don't understand the need to do 135 in a tall crossover, but as long as you're on the track you won't be endangering anyone else. Please be careful.

It's not so tall anymore because of the springs. They drop the Edge down quite a bit in both the front and the rear. The center of gravity is much lower. Also, I am talking straight line driving here. Drag strip stuff...no track driving. Certainly the Edge is not made for that kind of driving. Straight line down low on a sanctioned track is probably more safe than driving home from work in heavy traffic on our interstate here. I will be careful...no worries. :shift:

Ablb...to answer your question, I had the work done at a shop that did a very nice custom job for me. My research indicates that nobody has released an off the shelf cat back system for the 2011 or 2012 Edge Sport. I really don't understand that situation but word has it that Magnaflow is close to getting their system into the shipping phase. It's taking way too long in my opinion. If you roll up under the Sport, it is really a very simple dual exhaust system. It's an easy design. I guess demand is more likely to be the problem than design. Hopefully they will start shipping really soon.

You'll be safer until your driveshaft explodes. Not saying it would, but just pointing out you don't know if it's capable of handling the loads over 110mph.

But you're not going to hit 110 in a 1/4 mile anyway. Guys with modified EcoBoost Flexes are only hitting around 105. You'll be lucky to break 100.

I agree with you but I will report my findings when I get there. Are u talking about the 6 cyl ecoboost on the flex by the way?

Why why why oh why are they not giving the Explorer fans a bigger motor option. I just don't understand it. I'm not a horsepower freak although if one were only to read this thread they might think so. I sold my toyota 4Runner before I got my Edge but I didn't start out shopping for an Edge. Instead I was looking for the Explorer because I had seen a few around town and in commercials and liked them. Two things happened. One, the engine choice for the explorer is/was terrible and secondly, the Edge Sport reeled me in big time! There is just something about the shape and the lines of the 2011 and 2012. Anyway, all this is probably more than you wanted to read. Sorry.

I just tried this the other day. Yes the governer kicks in at 110 mph. What is the point of a 140 Speedo when the vehicle only does 110? How am I suppose to out run the Po-Po if the crown vics can go up to 120-130?

The new SHO police car will do 148, so you're screwed anyway...

So you spent how much $ just to find out it was limited to 110? Here's an interesting stat: my stock $30k 2007 Edge will do 111 mph (and yes I know for a fact it goes that fast and has more than once). Yours might get there quicker, but it's still not any faster....or maybe not as the Sport is heavier and even with the 3.7, I think it is slower than the SEL (we're talking stock, off the lot):

2011 Ford Edge SEL 0-60 mph 7.0 Quarter Mile 15.5

2011 Ford Edge Sport 0-60 mph 7.5 Quarter Mile 15.7

I agree though, they should put the 3.5L ecoboost as an option for the Edge. I might would be more inclined to trade in my trusty '07...
