  1. We roll ours up. It's not practical to have in the car all the time, so it lives in a plastic cover in our attic until its needed. Traveling with it is no problem because there is plenty of room for other stuff either on top of it, or next to it.

I'm going with your idea of the mobile tent with the screens on magnets and a cut out memory foam topper. Going to add the trailer for all the luggage and toys. Who needs a trailer large enough to sleep in?

  2. Hello,

My 2007 Edge AWD has 58,000 miles on it. I just put new tires on a 5,000 or so miles ago and I have had it aligned three times and rotated tires twice since the new tires were put on............but I am getting cupping on the inside tread of all the tires. I have had people tell me my struts may be bad. Has anyone seen this happen with their Edge and what solved the problem? After spending $800 plus on new tires, I don't want them wearing in such a way so they wear out prematurely. If it is in fact bad struts, does anyone know of a strut spring assemble that is available for the Edge? I would like to replace the spring and struts as a unit instead of just the strut.............but I can't seem to locate any.

The struts seem OK when doing the "bounce test" on each corner of the vehicle and they are not leaking, but I am at a loss as to what is causing the cupping wear pattern on all four tires.

Thanks for any help that you can give me.

Are you putting any heavy loads or towing?

  3. Wet shampooing often makes the smells worse because it 'resurrects' them. So if they went over it with a shampooer they probobly did not get any of it out. Same as you never get the dog pee out of the carpet pad. I would go to a professional detailer. If it is cigarette smell that is going to be in and on every surface. The tar and tobacco float around and will be in the headliner and plastic and rubber surfaces. If she wipes down the arm rests or some other plastic piece I would bet the cloth will have a brown stain on it.

That's why you shouldn't be using shampoo. Shampoo is really a bunch of surfactants that help release the odor so it can be vacuumed up. And that may "resurrect" them as you put. That's where the Vinegar and Alcohol come in to chemically react and neutralize the odor chemicals.

Here's a blurb I just found about Vinegar (it also contains information I did not know about Baking Soda):

How do baking soda and vinegar remove odors? Actually, they neutralize odors rather than just covering them up. The secret is in their pH which causes a chemical change in the odorous compound. This chemical change might also help reduce the chemical bond of the compound to the fabric. Most odors come from compounds that are either acidic or alkaline / base. “Alkaline” and “base” are just different names for the same thing. It is necessary to understand pH to fully understand how baking soda and vinegar neutralize odors.

What really is pH? Let’s get chemical for a moment. The term “pH” is an abbreviation of “potential hydrogen” and refers to the amount of hydrogen ions present in a solution. A hydrogen ion is a hydrogen atom that has either lost an electron (H-) or gained an extra electron (H+). So, pH is a measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution and varies from 1 (highly acidic) to 14 (highly alkaline or base). Pure water is neutral with a pH of 7. Vinegar is acidic with a pH of 3 and baking soda is slightly alkaline with a pH of 9. Washing soda has a pH of 11.

Vinegar and baking soda help to balance pH levels by changing the chemical structure of odor-causing acids and alkalines bringing them closer to neutral. Because it is acidic, vinegar is more effective at neutralizing bases, and baking soda is more effective at neutralizing acids. If you mix vinegar and baking soda together when soaking smelly clothing, they will mostly cancel out each other.

  4. I have read allot of information on how to detail the exterior and take car of leather but I would like to get some feedback on cleaning and detailing the interior. My best friend just got a used Ford and it has cloth seats. The dealer "shampooed" the seats and carpet so they claim but they did a subpar job n my opinion. The vehicle smells like smoke and has some stains on the seats and carpet. Does anyone here have any recommendations for cleaning these materials or how to get the smoke smell out of or off of the surfaces without damaging it any further?

Using a steamer like Dingo suggested would help.

In my experience, to remove really stubborn chemical induced smells you need something that works at the molecular level. Vinegar has the ability to neutralize many odors. I would mix it 20/80 with water. OR 10% Vinegar / 40 % Alcohol / 50% water and use that as carpet cleaner solution.

It will stink like Vinegar until it dries and airs out. The alcohol will assist with that. Once the vinegar smell is gone, so should the smoke smell.

EDIT: I should include that I would only suggest this on cloth seats and carpet. NOT leather.

  5. Extended warranties only begin after the 3/36 factory b2b warranty expires. You have until then to purchase the extended warranty but there is a $100 extra fee after 12 months.

Unless you're financing the warranty with the vehicle, I say wait until the 3/36 is up to buy it. Otherwise you're just giving them your money to use for 3 years with no benefits.

Thanks for that tidbit about warranties. Didn't know that.

  6. I have not been able to locate the advanced menu for the BT settings on the droidx. I remember having one for my old phone (BB storm). From my previous post, I made zero changes to MFT or the droidx and the text messaging started working out of the blue for about a month. Not an end of the world event for me, but just curious as to what it was that made it work then not work.

I ask because my experience with getting it to read messages recently included an advanced menu. But I'm on a custom ROM with Android 2.3.4 as the base.

I had to allow messaging access (for sending sms) and the FTP service (for reading sms)

  7. I've taken several trips now in my 2011 LTD AWD and noticed that sometimes when I let-off the throttle around the 50-60 mph range the vehicle feels like the brakes are being partially applied or the transmission is causing exceptional drag. The vehicle seems to s;ow down too quickly. I thought this was some sort of hill-decent but I don't think the edge has that feature. Could one of these TSBs cause this problem?

    Date Reported: MAY 10 2011

    NHTSA Reference: #10039121

    TSB Reference: #TSB-11-5-6

Description: FORD: THERE MAY BE A SLUGGISH ACCELERATION OR HESITATION FEELING WHEN ROLLING TO A STOP. THIS WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A HARSH BUMP. *RM

    Date Reported: MARCH 01 2011

    NHTSA Reference: #10039053

    TSB Reference: #AS-21769

Description: FORD: IF THERE IS AN INTERMITTENT LACK OF POWER, SURGE, OR HESITATION WHILE DRIVING THE BRAKES WILL OVERRIDE ACCELERATION. *RM

Edge has this feature (fuel cut on hill descent) and also Smart charging which allows the Alternator to put an increased load on the drivetrain during deceleration to maximize efficiency.

  8. I currently have a DroidX cellphone. Back in August when I was still running sync version 2.4 on my MFT, the text messaging feature started working out of the blue. I had made zero changes to my droidx or MFT. It was a nice feature, but could get annoying at times if a lot of twitter text messages were received in a short amount of time. I had to do a hard reset in Sept. on my droidx to fix other issues on the cellphone. Since then the text messaging feature has not worked. It would be nice to figure out what was making it work. Now that I have updated the sync version on the MFT to 2.1 I might never know.

Go into BT settings in your phone and see if there is an advanced menu.

  9. I've used Invisible Glass for years and never had issues, until I recently purchased a 2011 Edge. I don't know what the dealer put on the windows (inside and out) when prepping the SUV for delivery, but now I get streaks, film, and definitely not a clean glass as with previous vehicles. I've used vinegar and water, clean microfiber towels, then gone back to Invisible Glass, and the same results. I'm miffed. Anyone have any additional thoughts or ideas?

    Thanks

Same thing here. But I thought it was my fault for trying this Rain-X anti-fog crap. It was like buttering my windows to stop condensation rant2.gif.

Since then, I've been unable to completely eliminate it. It magically reappears in a week. O_o

  10. Hmmm..that IS good!!

Sorry to bring this thread back from a state of coma, but I just found a drink that smells like ONR:

Monster M-80 is a juice blended energy drink with Apple, Passion Fruit, and Pineapple Juice concentrates listed as the first few ingredients

    monster.m-80.can.jpg

Put it to my lips today and almost put it down because it smelled so much like my weekend carwashings.

  11. Buddy of mine was cool enough to grab me a set of puddle lamps from his work and even took the time to separate the lenses. Now I don't have to worry about screwing my originals up! After reading all the threads on this subject, I ordered a few off ebay that are 31mm. I'm sure it's gonna be a while before I get them but I'll be sure to post the results.

    That guy deserves a beer!

  12. The first thing that came to mind here... if you had 2.11 previously installed, SyncMyRide would not had offered you the download. Sounds like your service center did a half ass job.

So. now you get SMS read to you by the Sync system? You weren't able to do that before??

If an update to the software has enabled this, then it's not what I had assumed before. I thought this feature was up to the phone but now it sounds like Touch plays a bigger part than I thought.

Did your TPMS ever clear up?

Yeah... I thought no update since I was on 2.11. But low and behold, Syncmyride.com offered it up. O_o

And you're right, it was a half-ass job! Because the services screen was all jacked from it. rant2.gif

I'm not certain what exactly triggered the magic of SMS. Solution could have been 2 fold.

And while we're on the subject, I finally got it to READ me a text!!!! happy%20feet.gif In Android you have to enable 'FTP service' in the BT Advanced settings for reading new messages. (BTW, this is a relatively new phone (MT4G Slide) so I'll have to bust out the older phone (MT4G) and see if I can replicate.

As for the TPMS, it was actually right! The right rear tire was low about 8psi versus the others. I'll have to keep an eye on it in the event I have a bum rim/tire.

  13. For the AM/FM stations:

    - Pressing and letting out quickly, takes you to the next preset station

    - Pressing and holding for a second, and then letting up, makes it scan up or down, depending on what you pressed

I don't have Sirius, not sure if the same is true.

    This 'kind of' works.

I say that because it seems to jump around randomly sometimes. It's a weird behavior that I cannot figure out. Will need to play around more to figure out the nuances.
