Replacing TSS & OSS sensors

Hi all,

My wife's '08 Edge SEL FWD seems to have the common issue of the OSS sensor going out. We were on a trip this past weekend and it went into limp mode with the associated dash lights(wrench, odo error, etc...). Let the car sit over night and made it most of the way home the following day without incident(about 350 miles). It did trip one more time but a shut down/start up fixed it for long enough to make the remaining portion of the trip. Upon arriving at home I was able to pull a P0720(Output Speed Sensor Circuit) code from the car. Today I went and purchased the OSS sensor before doing a little more research. Looking here http://www.justanswer.com/ford/58rly-change-output-speed-sonsor-08-ford-edge-awd.html it appears this is an internal sensor requiring draining and pulling the transmission pan. Since all this is involved I assume you'd want to replace at minimum the TSS sensor and trans filter as well? Can anyone verify for me? It looks like the TR sensor has to removed as well but I can't find the part number on it. Would it be recommended to replace this as well? If any shade tree/back yard mechanics have any info on this job I'd really appreciate it. I'm comfortable on most things in cars but transmissions are one area I never like to touch. It appears from these write ups that a lot of unnecessary items are removed. Seems to me that these items could be swapped by just draining the fluid and removing the cover? Am I missing something here that warrants all the other portions of this fix?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hey my wife has an 08 Limited, and it is doing the same thing yours is from the sounds of it. Did you replace those sensors yet? Did it fix the problem? We discovered if you just clear the code the problem goes away. Well, let me explain, you can be truckin down the road and the odometer will read 'odo data error', the transmission will kick out of overdrive, the wrench light, the airbag light, and eventually the tire pressure monitoring system shows faulty as well. If you slow to a stop, it seems the transmission slips a lot until you get up to a certain speed (20-30 I think) and it will start shifting again but only up to drive. Also if you park it and put it back in any gear it slams hard. Like make you cringe kind of hard. But, like I said you clear the code, it's normal again, for 20 miles to 3 days. You can't predict it. So being that said I've come to the conclusion to just replace the sensors. Let me know what you came up with.

Ok went to transmission ship today. Well, it's a mixed bag of results. First I found out ford has 3 sets of transmissions used in Edge. 1 was used by ford and gm, in the Saturn Vue (6t4). Second sets are 6t35 6t40 and 6t50 6t55.

Now mine has the 6t50 I assume. So common problems are?

Just a little heads up my edge isn't throwing any codes. Only dashboard light on is low air in tire. So mechanic says there isn't much he can do.

Previous post was about 1 to 2 times a month it jerks hard in reverse and requires some extra gas to get going at normal speeds.

Anyways this was a update was all.

I just replaced my TSS and OSS sensors this past weekend.

My 07 Edge had developed the symptoms that many have had. Shuddering/shaking/vibration under normal load or while climbing an incline.

Took me about 2 hours to do it. If you are at all mechanically inclinced it's very much a DIY job. I picked up the parts at the local dealer for around 113.

You can find repair instructions all over the internet but, you don't necessarily have to follow them to the letter when it comes to removing other parts, hoses, etc.

Only things I removed were the entire airbox, shifter cable clip, and hard trans line at top of trans. Once that was out of the way it was smooth sailing.

Only thing you might not be able to do is reset/clear the KAM. The dealer told me that disconnecting the battery and then connecting the cables together doesn't actually clear it. I'm a BMW/MINI tech so I'm not sure if that's accurate or not. (Perhaps if there is a Ford tech on here they could confirm?)

I have a diag/scanner so I was able to do it that way.

During the drive home it was an instant improvement. No more hard shift from 1st to 2nd and no more shudder!!

I think my Edge has developed same problem as yours.

It would hard shift from 1st to 2nd (sometimes, not all the time) and start shuddering between 5th and 6th gears.

The first problem started happening about 2 years ago and it was very intermittent. I couldn't figure out if it was weather related or just tempermental. Second issue started happening about a month or so ago.

One way to circumvent both from happening would be to make sure the engine is revved up slightly higher when taking off from the lights and doing the same when it shifts to 6th on a highway.

I'm curious if this is something you've been noticing as well?

Could very well be the solenoid body assembly (also called the TCM). TSS/OSS is pretty specific. If you have problems other than those, you have to look at the valve body and the SBA. There are TSBs for specific conditions that can be addressed by recalibration as well. You can look them up here

http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/

Not to say you should rule out engine related issues like spark plugs/coils/MAF sensor/TB. I would check those first just because they are so much easier to get to!

I've got a 2008 Taurus that's just starting to show signs of this at 55,000 miles. Went into limp mode about 150 miles from home last week. I just disconnected the battery for a few minutes and it got me home and has been fine for about a week so far. I sometimes feel a slight trans stutter at a steady speed between 60 and 80 mph. I'm gonna wait til it happens again before making a move. I should add that this happened right after I did the first 5 quart drain and refill of the trans but the high speed stutter was already happening before that.

Well, been living with this problem for 20,000 miles and, believe it or not, it seems to have fixed itself. Been over a week since I felt that very irritating hwy stutter. Really weird that it's gone but I'm not complaining.:):)
