Will There be a 2014 Model?

I noticed the late production start up date for the 2014 model Edge which makes me wonder if the 2015 (all new) will begin this November bypassing 2014. The lag between 2013 final order and 2014 order acceptance leads me to believe there will be a plant shutdown for re-tooling for the new model.

Are people already wanting another redesign on the Edge? I really like what they did with it in 2011. Not sure it needs to be changed yet, IMO.

I don't really disagree with you but the platform is quite 'old' at this point, relatively speaking. I think these vehicles could benefit from a newer, stiffer chassis with some weight savings engineered in. What I don't want is a downsized vehicle with a piddly little one-point-something four banger!

The benefit to having an 'older' vehicle is they have the wrinkles ironed out. We were luckily left out of the gas tank recall announced today. So far at least!

It's time to put these old dogs to sleep. The same as the last edge before 2011 just a different front end. Since its only been running since 2011 i dont see them coming out with a different style tell 2015 maybe even 2016. They need fix the towing capacity issue of it being so low and maybe even come up with a 7 seater version.

2014 is a carryover because the 2015 will be a redesign as mentioned in an older thread on here

Edge is 8 model years old in 2014 so is due a full replacement with new chassis, drivetrain and Ford corporate facelift. 2007 was unique, 2011 improved it further - 2015 will be a world car (launching in Europe) so could a bit different

I'm looking forward to see it but might aim for Explorer or Evoque next myself

I am very interested in buying a new Ford Edge Limited with option package 302. I've been searching for information on the 2014 and 2015 Edge. Crazy that Blankster's thread is one of the top search results for 2014 Ford Edge.

I called Ford yesterday to ask about Omar's links to Ford's media site for the 2014 Ford Edge. I asked how accurate that information was. I said the information appears to have a mistake with ["New colors: Sunset Metallic, Oxford White and Ingot Silver (Edge Sport)"] because Ingot Silver isn't new for 2014 and is available on the 2013 Sport.. The person put me on hold then said the pages that Omar linked to are subject to change till August.

Given that the 2013 Ford Edge was released in March 2012 and typically the 2014 would be released about a year later (March 2013), I have a hard time believing the only change for 2014 will be the addition of (1) color, orange. Maybe 2014 Ford Edge won't be a new generation but maybe some other change like (I'm hoping) an eight speed transmission or a faster processor on the nav system. I like the current generation and will probably buy the current generation of Edge. I just want to know what changes the 2014 Edge will have. Guess I wait till August, then maybe January 2014.

Jim I totally agree with you. Something doesn't add up. Only possible reason I can think of is maybe the 2015 will be a

late release and by delaying the 14 model they can lessen that gap. If that makes any sense

My 11 lease is up in September and will likely get the 14 if the numbers work out

Why the the 9 month delay? Anyone from the Oakville Assembly Complex care to clarify? Free brewskis, eh.

Tom - Best explanation so far. Makes perfect sense. I doubt a major tranny or engine change on the last model year of the current generation. I have a case of cold brew on the table ready to UPS to Oakville

Canada so maybe we get an answer. ;)

I worked as an electrician/process control technician in a plant. We knew what was going on because we couldn't schedule vacation during a shutdown and we updates software and fixed lingering problems during shutdowns. We worked closely with the engineers during a retooling. I didn't work in the auto industry but I'm pretty sure plenty of people in the plant know what is going on. They can't say to protect their jobs.

Dingo - Did you really call the plant? That crazy and great.

There are many, many reasons to why timing of a model is what it is. One thing most people don't think about is CAFE. CAFE is calculated by the total number of vehicles over a model year. Since the Edge is one of the more fuel consuming vehicles in Ford's fleet, it brings down the CAFE average. So say if Ford has a pretty good CAFE number going for 2013, but is worried about 2014, then they will extend the 2013 Edge production (increasing the number of Edges that bring down the average) but shorten the 2014 run (reducing the number of Edges that bring down the average).

I don't know if this is the main reason, but it is certainly a part of every model year timing decision.

As for the plant shutdown, Ford shuts down every July and every Christmas, regardless of when a model changeover is happening. Tooling these days is designed to be flexible so it can build both the old and the new version at the same time.
