Ford's Next-Generation Edge Will Leap Ahead of the Competition

Daniel Miller / Fool.com

Ford Edge Forum - Ford gets a lot of credit these days for its incredible business turnaround, and rightfully so. But I don't believe the company receives enough credit in how it's succeeded in designing one vehicle hit after another. CEO Alan Mulally and his team's change in strategy included designing new cars with aggressive styling, more technology and safety features, and better fuel economy -- it's worked like a charm.

At this week's Los Angeles Auto Show, Ford unveiled its new Edge Concept, which will probably be very similar to the production Edge seen in 2015 as a 2016 model -- and I think it will set the model's record sales in the U.S. when it's launched. Here's why

I'm a little confused by this statement. So no model year 2015 Ford Edge or the 2015 will be the last year of the 1st generation Edge? I thought the Ford Edge 2nd generation was going to be a 2015 model release in late 2014.

Daniel Miller is the only person I could find reporting the Edge will debut in 2015 as a 2016 model. Hopefully/probably Daniel is mistaken. Daniel isn't a car guy, he has a marketing background.

At this moment if something happened to my MKX, I think I would replace it with the Grand Cherokee diesel. I drove one the other day and was really impressed although there was no new tech that isn't already in my Lincoln. I just really like the diesel.

Am I the only one who thinks they need a little redesign on that front end. I don't want it to be an SUV; I want it to maintain it's classiness.

How about an MKT instead, Richy? You will get the extra room & still have a fast, good looking ride!

I've never liked the look of it...too large. I usually keep my cars 6 or 7 years and it's now been 3 years. The GC will have a redesign by then and hopefully some more diesel choice too.

Definitely hoping for a diesel option at some point!

That's an interesting point. With the Edge going global, will there be a diesel version for the E.U. and elsewhere?

Any insight into Ford's longterm fueling strategy? They have a turbo for the Edge, why not a hybrid?

Since the Mondeo is getting diesels for Europe I expect Edge to do the same.

Maybe they'll make a 5.0 GT model. :spiteful:

I doubt they would do that, but I love to see them drop the 3.5 twin turbo eco boost motor in the sport model as the 2011-2014 sport had a different motor than the rest of the Edge models.

Then Shelby can pick up production with an Edge, too. :drop:

You mean the GT500 model, right?

The FWD transaxle can't handle the torque of the 3.5 EB; it was tested years ago. Probably the same issue with a diesel.

That's why they created the 6F55 version for the Flex, MKS and Taurus SHO 3.5EB.

Rob at ProCharger had the same problem with RD on an Edge Sport, They were grenading under the Edge....

If the AWD also fails, I'm totally down for the RWD model. Wooh! Can we get a photoshop of the gt500 hood on an Edge, with the vents and badges on the fender? Maybe even a Mustang/Taurus style grille on the 2015. Why don't they just let the forum design it?

*edit: I also think it's time for a digital speedometer, as the civic has it, but located in the middle of the tach that should be more centered in the cluster. So the tach would still have a gauge, but not a needle. It could show rpms with a digitial loading bar-esque thing. The message screen can be larger and handle all the error icons and whatnot. No?

Please no digital speedo, sorry I don't care for them and they belong in Civics.
