My father was a P-51 pilot in WWII. Flew P51-B's first then the D. Earned the DFC, AM, and WWIIVM. 3 Confirmed. My brother is a retired Continental pilot - 727 driver. I'm just a Private - Gen Av. Spent some time in USCG on the West Coast MSO LA/LB and flew in some HU-16 Albatross's doing SAR and Drug Interdiction. Also on the fantail on various USCGC's looking up at HH52's but never actually was in one.

Chipster, very cool! Late 'D' model with drop tanks. Also, the small nacelle from the fuselage to the vertical stab was an addition on later models. My father was 8thAF, 352 Fighter Group, "Bluenosed Bastards of Bodney." Bomber escort out of southern England and then raise as much hell as possible on the return. Flew with George Preddy - top WWII fighter ace. Lotsa' stories about those days.

Some of you guys fly some beastly airplanes! No military background here, just watched the airplanes fly in & out of my hometown airport in the 60's & early 70's. At that time Kutztown PA was a pretty busy little airfield. Always wanted to fly but didn't take the plunge until '84 in Williamson NY with the great instructor Vernon Tyrrell. Bought the Stinson 108-2 on the field & flew that for maybe 20 years.

That was Katie, and she went to a Harrier pilot in Cherry Point. Then flew a Bellanca Viking for a few years before the 310 (Jimmy) I now have.

And Finally, one of my favorite aviation images

Cheers All

I've spent to many hours aboard Ospreys and CH-53 Super Stallions. Fascinating machines, but i do not miss the oil dripping on me that's for sure.

Few pictures from my time in service.

We overhaul the CH-53 fold hinges and rotor spindles. Always awesome to see them in action.

We also do a large variety of commercial airline equipment for turbo fan and turbo props.

Can you explain the components of this powerplant from front to back? I am interested in the mid-section. Are those some sort of exhaust headers that feed...What? I see what looks to be a primary gear box at the back end, but what about the assembly just aft of the exhaust header? Great picture!

So front is on the right. So visible components from right to left

Reduction gearbox -> Front case / Air inlet -> Rear inlet with accessory drive -> Low pressure compressor section with diffuser (all the tubes you see that look like headers) -> Gas gen case and combuster assy -> Power turbine case and exhaust assy

The tubes you asked about feed the centrifugal high pressure compressor.

You find these engines in planes like the Bombardier Q400 (DHC-8 Dash 8) and Dornier 328

Cool....one of my favorite subjects! I grew up in/around the aircraft industry. My Dad spent 20 years in the Air Force from 51 to 71 and then his entire career after that till 2012 in the private aircraft maintenance sector. He maintained everything from Lears to Jet Star, Citations, Hawker, Gulf Stream & many in between.

He was well known in the industry for his sheet metal work and while based at G.O. Carlson airport in Coatesville PA he did some incredible work on some antique fighters that were/are based there.

Tagging along as his kid I managed to score rides in some amazing machines....everything from Ed Shipley's of The Horsemen Aerobatic Team fame (was owner then) P-51D "Big Beautiful Doll" to his T-6 Texan. Sat in tail gunner position in an Grumman TBF-1 Avenger during a test flight to New Garden piloted by Al Sheaves.

My Dad's boss during his final years was the owner of Synthes, Mr. Hansjörg Wyss (Hans to his friends) who brought home 2 retired Swiss military fighters. A Hawker Hunter and a De Havilland Vampire were the last 2 aircraft my Dad laid hands on for someone else. When he retired we purchased him a Bede BD-5 kit out of Florida that the previous owner had not completed in order to 'keep him off the streets', unfortunately he passed before completing it. Him being a certified A&P would have made it easy for him to complete but since I'm not one, I've taken to just tinkering with it and at some point will donate the air frame to a museum to use for display.

Below pic of my truck at the time with the Hunter and Vampire in background.
