2016 Edge Rear Window Exploded

Recommended Posts

Fun surprise today when my husband pushed the remote door lock.. and the rear window exploded. Thankfully he was unharmed. Does anyone have input regarding this? We will be going to the dealership tomorrow and I'm going to register this with Transport Canada. I'm reading online that car makers are not honoring this part breakdown under warranty. This clearly is not due to a rock. Appreciate anything you can tell us.

There's a few people on this forum that the same thing has happened. A little bit concerning!

I'm not sure what to do. We'll see what Ford says. My research online seems to indicate this is an issue but one that we may have a fight on. This happened out of the blue, with no stress on the window at that time in any way.

Odd that this happened with just a door unlock operation. Are we talking about the rear hatch or rear door? Was this car garaged, or was it sitting in (I am guessing) a very cold ambient temp? If outside, how cold was it?

This just happened to me yesterday morning. I was advised by a friend to look for other folks that had same issue, low and behold!

So my car 2016 Ford Edge SEL that I keep in great condition (picky owner) was in my garage, locked.  I drove it on Sunday, no problems and used the rear hatch to unload groceries on Sunday - no issues on Sunday.  Monday morning open garage door to head to work and there it went - the rear window was shattered.

According to the auto glass shop and auto body shop - the notes online to fix the rear window are not easy because of the spoiler needing to be removed which normally gets broken in the process.  This means a new spoiler.  My estimate is at $2059 right now, $845 for the spoiler (slim chance they can save one on car) and $650 for window rest is other parts and labor.

Ford does need to fix the design of the car to avoid spoiler issues and figure out why rear window shatters.

Anyone have luck with  warranty or Ford?

Is it still under the factory warranty? (36 months/36K miles)?

If it was a factory defect it should have happened long before now (one would think).  You can find shattered glass reports on just about any model.

Glass breakage is usually covered by your insurance company's comprehensive plan.

It's also ridiculous that they can't remove the spoiler without breaking it.   You might want to try another body shop.

i received a recall notice about this issue and had my dealer check it during a service. apparently it was due to something around the wiper motor IIRC.

i'm sure if you do some research you can find the recall notice.

[edit to add:] apparently it is Field Service Action (FSA) 17B39

[2nd edit to add:] it's on my service invoice so it's official.

Good catch - there does appear to be a FSA on it but I can’t see whether the FSA extends the warranty or not.  Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t.  It’s not a safety recall so better check with the dealer.

Yep, there definitely is a recall on this. Although my back glass never broke, my dealer did the necessary modifications to my Edge at no charge.

Still not a recall.  That means it's registered with the government and every vehicle affected has to be inspected and/or repaired.  This is just a FSA which may provide an extended warranty for the repair.

I can't pull up 17B39 on my OASIS access...I did pull up 17B38 which is an issue with the fusions and is dated Dec of 17.

Did you access 17B39 on the Ford site somewhere?

No just a google search but looking back the references were other topics here on the Edge forum and a few Carfax reports, so maybe that was a typo.

Did you find anything titled "backlight shatters"?

Actually I did a little more digging and pulled those vins in OASIS.  All 3 that I found were Canadian vehicles so not sure if its a Canadian FSA or not.  Either way, owner notifications for the program were mailed out so affected vehicle owners would have been notified.  Sounds like a defect in a specific run of vehicles or something?  Not sure.  Mine isn't tagged but I am in the USA?  More questions than answers ;)

I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that you live in the USA…Let's not forget that all Edges are built in Canada (Oakville plant). Also to me, what I really appreciated is that I did not have to PAY  for anything… heck, I didn't even know about this problem until the dealer told me about it and offered to do the required modification at no charge...

Let me clarify...all 3 were built for sale in Canada.  Clicking the FSA announcement for them brings up "can't find service bulletin."

It would be nice to know the details of this customer satisfaction program.

It's tempered glass- it just shatters sometimes.    Our glass top table shattered for no reason, as did one of my co-workers.  I've heard of shower doors shattering when no one was home.  F150 rear windows shatter on a regular basis.   Get it covered under your insurance glass coverage and move on.
