Mobil 1 Annual Protection

Mobil 1 has recently introduced a new full synthetic oil that they say is good for 20k miles or 1 year, whichever comes first.

They are stating that it meets or exceeds all OEM requirements. It is getting a lot of chatter on the other car boards and there is a few pages on it on the BITOG site. I searched here and did not find any discussions on it. I was wondering of anyone had any experience with this yet. Their site states that it meets the Ford Spec WSS-M2C947-A (along with the GM specs). They also advertise a limited warranty for the 20k/1 year claim. If you do a search there for providers it gives a list of where it can be found. That includes WalMart, although when doing search directly at WM's site there is no mention of M1 AP being available. Some postings in the BITOG site mention that it has been found at some WM locations for about $50 for a 5qt jug.

 

Personally, I am bit leery of oil going 20k miles although I admit I am a fan of M1 and their filters. I would have to see or hear first hand accounts of someone going 20k miles until an oil change before I would consider it. My regular oil change is M1 Extended Performance 5w-20 with a M1 Extended Performance filter changed at 5k intervals. Is anyone thinking about going to full 20k oil changes? It would be interesting to see the oil analysis info after 20k miles.

 

Just interested in getting thoughts or feed back about 20k or 1 year oil change intervals.

 

One a side note: Mobil is still advertising a $15 rebate if you purchase 5qts of any M1 oil product along with a M1 EP filter. The rebate runs through 5/31/17. I'm going to buy a jug and a filter just to get the rebate and use it when my next oil change comes along.

20K would be for normal driving as defined by Ford. To me, driving in hot climate like TX and FL probably disqualifies the "normal" to me, but the car might be fine LOL. In any case, I WILL say that the oil probably will work fine, all you have to do is strengthen the additive packs to get to 20K. I mean they already had their EP lineup, now going a little further. The base oil has probably not improved any.

 

You don't want to be the exception to the rule and have the oil fail on you. Let oil analysis be your guide. Go Blackstone!

Just remember that even though it meets Ford spec you still have to follow Ford's intervals which I think is max 10K, regardless of what the oil mfr says. Which is why they need a limited warranty. I'd hate to be in the middle of that pissing contest between Ford and Mobil about which warranty should cover something.

I wonder how well it works with direct injection & blowby & gas dilution.

 

I was curious about this myself, but will probably just stick with M1 Full Syn. I end up changing my oil roughly every 4 months/4,000 miles anyway. My oil life monitor is never under 50%, but gives me piece of mind to change the oil anyway.

 

I believe that the 2.0 Ecoboost has low friction rings to help with fuel economy, which results in this being injected back into your intake manifold. Had around 750 highway miles when i drained my Catch Can & a fresh oil change with Mobil1.

Sorta like being in the hospital for major surgery and wondering if a surgeon is covered by your health insurance or not.

Just remember that even though it meets Ford spec you still have to follow Ford's intervals which I think is max 10K, regardless of what the oil mfr says. Which is why they need a limited warranty. I'd hate to be in the middle of that pissing contest between Ford and Mobil about which warranty should cover something.

I got caught in a similar circumstance when daughter totaled her 6 month old Focus. At the time there was a $1000 rebate. The database they use for comps (3rd party) only had one price in it from a local dealer who included the $1000 rebate in their listed price but didn't note it anywhere. Geico takes that price and subtracts the $1000 rebate (again). We had gap insurance so I'm thinking why do I care - let the gap insurance company fight it out with Geico. Except the gap insurance refuses to pay the $1000 difference saying Geico calculated it wrong (which was the case).

 

Fast forward 3 months and I'm escalating to Geico trying to explain that they counted the rebate twice. They go back and do another pricing report and now there are several vehicles in the database and their price comes within $50 of what I was asking for. Problem solved but it was a PITA.

I read years ago that taxi cab companies in New York don't change their oil on regular intervals, rather they sample the oil weekly and change when it got too dirty or acidic.

 

While the oil may now be engineered to go 20k or 1 year, I would be nervous about not changing the filter evey three to six months.

 

And I agree with akirby, if your manual states every 7,500 or 10,000 miles, that's what you need to hold to for warranty purposes. There's a strong history of auto manufacturers denying warranty service based on not maintaining oil change intervals. (Chrysler comes to mind after to 08 crash. Even with good records at a dealer they were rejecting claims of blown engines, based on every little thing).

 

I haven't read the warranty on the MobIle-1 product, but they usually are written in such a manner that you need to keep super records and be able to prove beyond any doubt that you followed the requirements precisely.

Was reading the Mobile 1 warranty. There's plenty of wiggle room on their part. That ARE stating (in so many words) that you must also use the Mobile 1 filter on the same 20k/one year interval.

 

Think of it, one trip through the desert or other really dusty place such as driving on unpaved roads (we still have dirt roads here in Indiana) and your oil gets dirty. It's the filter that takes the dirt out, and when it's full, it starts to bypass the filter, allowing dirty oil to continue to circulate, scoring the bearings and other high tolerance parts, like the rings.

You guys who are weary of going that long on a single drain are correct. I have experimented with this issue back in the older days with some of the car clubs I have been with, and the danger is the viscosity change you will see over that period of time. The oil may be just fine, but you do not want to run an oil that is way out of spec viscosity wise in these engines. When testing Amsoil Signature which was rated for upto 35k mile intervals back then, we found that the viscosity was already WAY out of spec by 12k miles. I think I was doing an oil analysis on their 0w30 on my Taurus SHO but the 0w30 was acting like a 10w40 or 15w40 by 12k miles. That would be unacceptable. With our GDI and our GTDI Ecoboosts, the bigger danger comes in the form of oil dilution as the viscosity is going to go in the other direction. Those here who were on another thread complaining about this issue should see just how bad it can get on other GTDI engines out there like the Subaru 2.0 turbos. I tend to do longer drives than most people, but this potential oil dilution issue is why I am sticking with 8k oil change intervals using either Amsoil Signature or Mobil 1 EP.

I found the same with my testing on AMSOIL the viscosity changed among other issues. I however change my oil in both my Edges based on hours not miles. Far more accurate. I have through many lab tests narrowed down the city vs highway thing also and am dropping my wifes Edge down to 150 hours with testing at 100 hrs to determine if it can go to 150 hr. My Edge however does pretty decent at 200hrs. So for me 200hrs is the oil change point.
