2016 Edge Sport - My Build

Recommended Posts

Update 11/3: Updated photos on top of Page 2.

EDIT: Initially I made this post about wrapping or painting my headlights - but it's turned into a build update thread.

Hey everyone!

I'm new here as I just picked up a 2016 Ford Edge Sport in April. I'm an addict to modding cars and go too extreme. For example - I ordered a front splitter from SS-Tuning to install on my car and also bought the Euro version of the headlights to install on my car (and paid too much for both of them). Still waiting for those. In the meantime, I purchased a 3D model online of the Sport and have been playing around with it. Initially I bought it to visualize blacking out certain parts and maybe some vinyl graphics on the car, but then I found myself working on the rear of the car.

I edited this so the top half of the taillights would be painted body color to go with the lines that are already there, but it slims it down and makes a pretty cool look in my opinion. Now I may be crazy and probably will never ever do something like that - but does anyone  have any experience with anything remotely similar? Whether that's painting headlights or taillights to tint them. Does this even seem like anything realistic? I just did this all right now - so it could still be one of those "in the moment" things and tomorrow I'll wake up and wonder what drugs I was on.

P.S. I also played around with the rear diffuser to see what painting part of it body colored would look like, while putting a gloss black on parts + the exhaust tips. Remember, this is all just for fun.

P.S.S. Now I could pull this off with a wrap, so I imagined my car being another color too ??

Welcome to the forums.

The photo with the top of the taillights in body color looks best, in my opinion.

But, the more interesting bits, where did you get the model from? Also, please do update once you get the Euro spec headlights. How much did they end up costing?

This Fender Flare kit for Ford Edge is so wicked!  I think SS Tuning manufactures it.

Yes they do! I only did the front Splitter since it's too pricey to do everything. It looks great in a wrapped scenario - but not sure I really want to do it to my car. But after 12 weeks of waiting the splitter from SS Tuning should be arriving this week!

Thanks! I had to purchase it (wasn't cheap but made it easier for me to visualize some things) - it's from TurboSquid.

The Euro headlights I had to go onto the German eBay site to try and find them. And messaged a seller willing to ship them to me internationally. They were about $950 total + $200 for shipping.

I did a lot of research because there are other non-OEM lights on eBay and Alibaba from China - and they actually advertise many of them using OEM photos, when in fact the style they sell was a bit difference. You don't notice it until you really inspect the photos posted on the listing. So I had to make sure I bought used ones and that the part numbers were legit from Ford. Hopefully I get those in this week or next week and I'll post some photos! I'm hoping they will be just plug and play.

are they LHD cutoff or RHD cutoff? I know Germany is LHD but that does not mean these came from a LHD Edge

Soo I got the headlights in...and they're not 100% plug in play. I'm probably the only crazy person to try this but if anyone else has any insight that'd be greatly appreciated.

So I got the passenger headlight in fine. Except only the low beam + blinker works. The high beams and the DRLs do not work at all. Which is primarily what I bought these for what the white LED daytime running light strip.

The driver side headlight I can't even install...so the location where the wiring harness plugs in is on the European headlights is a lot further away than the stock lights. Meaning the driver side stock wiring harness won't reach at all. Needs to be a good couple of inches longer to reach.

I happened to have a scheduled service appointment already at Ford. So I dropped the car off to see if there's anything they can custom do to A] extend the wiring harness and B] see if there is some sort of code or programming that has to happen in order for the car to recognize the DRLs and High Beams on the Euro lights. If anyone has any idea on how to possibly make those functions work that would be great. I just got a call from them saying they probably won't be able to change the computer settings (FORScan related I'm assuming) because it's of a different country.

Pics below without the DRLs working. But you can see the comparison between the stock Sport light (on the right/driver side) and the oem Euro light (on the left/passenger  side).

The Euro light looks quite good.  Is this LED or halogen?  They have adaptive LED headlamps available across the pond.  Are you still using the U.S. lighting module?

I had HIDs stock, but the Euro ones are LEDs. I am still using the U.S. lighting module. The high beams don't work and neither do the DRLs fully - Ford couldn't help so I likely need to go to an aftermarket shop.

I got both headlights installed (Ford extended the wiring harness for the driver side so I could install it).

I finally got the DRLs to work by changing some settings in FORscan...however they only work while the car is off. As soon as you turn the car off they stop working all together unfortunately. And permanently unless I reset the system in FORscan again. I think it might have to do with the power outage or voltage, I have no idea. I'm glad I know how to get them to turn on but they don't last.

Going to have to find a automative light professional/aftermarket wiring professional to see if they can help wire it separately because I'm stumped. Because I absolutely love them I think they look amazing with the regular DRLs.

Before you look into automotive lighting specialist, I'd strongly suggest you reach out to one of our resident programers. @jmr061 or Dan at https://www.sync3programming.com

Your issues may very well be resolved with FORSCan.

Amazing! That'd be great if I could get it resolved without wiring anything differently. I appreciate the direction!

If you want to try things your way, check the BCM codes in the F-150 sheet, it has several mentions of LED lights in the BCM that might have an affect to your project.

What changes did you do in ForScan?

In this thread, a member installed Chinese (aftermarket) lights and had to make some changes. Maybe it will be helpful.

Thank you I appreciate the information. My car is getting worked on right now for other work, but once I get it back I'll play around with that and see if I can get something working. I honestly changed so much in FORScan I don't remember lol. But I know I changed the DRL settings from Dedicated DRL to Turn Lamp - and changed DRL includes parklamps from Disabled to Enabled. Along with some other ones to play around with it.

Do keep us updated. Another suggestion is to get the VIN of a Edge that came stock with these lights and check the ABD for it for those bits that are related to the DRL & headlights.
