  1. Same issue here!

I kept hearing this really high pitched whistle while driving at 40+ and my wife thought I was crazy. Told her to drive the car around without the radio for a day. Sure enough, she hears it now too. Once you hear it, its a curse, because you can't ignore it. Weird part is, it doesn't happen all the time, but the majority of the time for us.

  2. Also, to answer the first question. The oil quality is based off an algorithm that is based of your speed/RPM (engine usage), ambient/average temperature (external/ internal added wear essentially), and car specifications (average weight), etc. The quality displayed is not correct if you are doing heavy towing or driving in dirty conditions because the car has no way to measure those variables. In those instances, the manual makes estimations on oil, coolant, and transmissions changes based on pure averages with safe padding.

Again, these are averages and you can fall on the lower end of the bell curve and be disproportionately penalized despite Ford best "padding" efforts. How Ford decides arbitrarily how long it is until you need an oil change under these heavy duty (towing, and dirty) conditions is the same assumption that had been made in the past based on a 3K oil change, which is that it was the average and padded for safety for the products at hand at that time. The fact of that matter is, that beyond an initially small amount of driven mileage, its best to change oil based upon driving habits which are most likely akin to those assumed to be true within the oil quality meter.

Amazingly enough, automobiles and cars are about the last items Americans WANT longevity out of, and the manufacturers make all attempts to increase the life of the automobile. Knowing this, it is wise to follow the manual which states to follow the oil quality guide unless, and only unless, you have abnormal driving habits.

  3. I don't disagree that rings need to be seated due to hatching, at the same time, do you have any data to backup the fact that it takes approx. 1K miles to seat and 3K to just play it safe other than thats how it used to be? I'm not trying to be a d##k, I just really haven't seen any "proof" of this (other than the first 50ish miles) other than evidence or practices from the last century.

Seating the rings means forming the contact edge of the rings so that they scrape the inside of the cylinder as they travel up and down. This provides better protection from oil gatting into the combustion chamber and exhaust blow-by into the crankcase. Depending on how the vehicle is driven, the rings should seat in 1,000 miles. I would wait until 3,000 miles at the earliest (just to be sure) to go full synthetic unless you are in a very cold climate (in which case I would go to a 0W20 full synthetic.)

Switching to a full synthetic too early can permit the rings to form rounded contact surfaces which will not clean the cylinder walls as effectively, and may permit blow-by and reduced compression. This can lead to excessive oil consumption and shorter spark plug life.

  4. Remove all variables and work backwards in assessing whats wrong. Which item is more valuable to you if you lost the data, the phone or the sync? More than likely, the phone data is more valuable so work from that understanding. As akirby said, try reseting, then try pulling battery. If that does not work, master reset ford sync (via the menu system). If that doesnt work, master reset again and pull fuse #29. If that doesnt work, factory reset your phone and the myFord touch.

    Hi guys

I get my samsung instinc paired but after 2-3 minutes in drops my phone. Only once it worked for about 1 hour. Everything else works perfectly. Im hesitant to go to Ford as I heard so many scary storys of them trying to update softwear...

Has anyone had problems keeping cel phone paired?

  5. My issues w/ myFord Touch in 3 weeks:

    Sluggishness of system

Volume control unresponsive at times on steering wheel. Press once, goes up approx 6 notches. (3x per week) note: happens anytime from startup to car on for hour

Volume control on center console = less issues then above, but still periodically goes up approx 6 notches (1x per week) note: happens anytime from startup to car on for hour

Volume increments to big on my unit. Half-way should be normal/slightly louder than normal, not ear destroying. This is the worst when the above occurs with my 10 week old in the car.

Random (1-3x per week) performing schedule resets.

Re-indexing of ipod over and over when two ipods connected (sync my itunes used along with cleanup of all id tags, refreshed ipod software)

Re-indexing of USB thumb drive over and over again

SD card re-indexes periodically, but significantly less than both aforementioned issues

Album art for the same album is there sometimes, sometimes its not.

2 hard locks with screen freezes, result in a required pull of fuse 29

2 screen locks but still navigable via sync voice commands, result 1x worked fine upon engine cycling, 1x pull fuse 29

When phone attached, shows 1 less bar than on phone screen for both my EVO and wive's pixi

When I switched my phone from a Palm Pre to an EVO, syncing was not working right, result = master reset and all went well with a new sync.

    My Pleasures w/ myFord Touch

Both HTC EVO and Palm Pixi have sync, downloaded phonebook, and work with aplomb.

Folks I call state sound quality is great!

    Overall impressions and thoughts:

The items I though I would have problems with (phone syncing) have been a breeze.

Clearly having issues with getting music to play reliably, so far the best setup appears to be wives iPod with my music on SD card

Volume levels anger me. The volume adjustments need to be smaller at least on my unit.

Although issues are annoying, especially on a big purchase such as ours, overall satisfaction level from 1 to 10, 10 being best... I rate it at a 6 (just above "meh") Rating would go up 2 for better media handling, and 2 more for better speed.

  6. I haven't even bothered to contact my dealership yet about the TSB. I figure I will let them sort everything out over the next week or two and then book my appointment to have it applied.

Ugh! I feel the same way. In fact, this is why I ordered my edge a month or so into production, hoping it would result in better and more experienced craftsmanship (on the car build side). I know I should wait but it's too tempting especially since my problems are increasing in frequency at this point as detailed here >> http://www.fordedgeforum.com/index.php?/topic/5810-anyone-having-touch-issues/page__view__findpost__p__49403

I would do another master reset and pull fuse 29, but the wife is getting angry having to sync her phone over and over, and it's her car after all.

  7. Agree with mleber and cirockets. No issues whatsoever with venting frustrations and so forth, however copying and pasting the same post into multiple threads is over the top. I realize this isn't one of the forums that I am an Administrator at, however repeated redundant posts would simply be deleted if it was up to me. Anyways, this is still a great forum with a lot of great members here. Thanks for all of the great information everyone has shared over the last few months. :)

Heck yes Canuck.. you inspired me to order a lot of expensive detailing products.. now if only you can inspire me to actually use them :)

  8. MyFord Touch defaults my USB music to play alphabetically... even when playing a single album. Is there a way I can change/sort it to play by track number instead? Most of my songs are from CDs I have ripped myself, so i know there track numbers are embedded in the files.

In searching myFord touch issues, I have heard of some people having success by actually adding a numeric system to the title of the song. For example "Highway to Hell" would be named "01 Highway to Hell". People report even higher success using 3 digits versus 2. For example "001 Highway to Hell".

Also note that my myFord touch decides daily which way it wants to play them. Some days its in alpha order, other days numeric. I though first it must be if you ask to play album v artist, or whatever, but its all over the map and must be some sort of glitch at this point.

I seem to have no problem after doing a master reset and indexing the devices again. Trouble arrives if I ever disconnect and add more songs. Perhaps try a master reset? Just be aware this deletes all your saved info including phonebook, presets (maybe), etc.

Personally I am too anal to add numbers in the title, so I just deal with it right now.

  9. :banghead: Day 4, Called the dealer, the Sync support site is still down, nothing the dealer can do at this point. I find it a little funny though, other dealers are able to download and upgrade Sync system. I guess the 11 Edge gets a different type. Rental car is due today. No confirmation if Ford is going to pickup the tab.

I'll keep updating (just to vent I guess :banghead: )

Keep updating because it allows me to know if it's even worth my time to go down and try to get the update done or not. Hopefully soon!

  10. Sounds like they're having capacity issues - I'm sure this much software downloading by dealers is new for Ford (and most other mfrs - this is uncharted territory as far as car dealers go). Does anyone know if the dealers are using Ford issued and supported computers for this or do they use their own? If they're using their own then that's probably contributing to some of the problems.

Thats the problem, there are so many variables that could cause issues across the whole country. Just the other day we were getting horrible internet service here in SoCal. Could be completely on Ford's end or a mix of both. Regardless, I'm waiting and watching for a few days. Might take mine in tomorrow and I will update on status if I do.

  11. Now that's a personal attack. Cut it out and move on.

I honestly think both akirby and wilson should just not respond to each others posts. The majority of goings back and forth are between you two. Can you just PM each other when you disagree so its not out here?

    Edit:

Just on this page alone, the following should be removed or edited for being inflammatory or irrelevant to the topic which is "Anyone having touch issues"

part of post #43 should be removed

    Edit#2:

And thats just between you two.

  12. I to feel for her. I ask myself what would I do If my 40T+ car was in the garage for a month. I think the problem was that she post the same thing on every thread instead of on just the appropriate one. I don't have a problem with anyone airing their beefs or complaining (squeaky wheel gets the grease) but do it in a reasonable manner and not continuously.

  13. Hey, freedom of speech and association man!

You have the right to come and go, post or not post, read or don't read. We all have the right to feed the trolls or not. Although I will admit that when a thread is hijacked, we need better moderation to step in and redirect the topic, overall it appears most of the threads that are negative are kept in the negative threads. Those are easily avoided.

Your reason for hating this forum is your reason. I personally don't hate it, but to each his own.

Really it comes down to this:

As a car, the edge is FANTASTIC. No one seems to refute this.

myFord Touch, has its problems and they are abnormally high, and pretty bad for some folks.

If you love your car so much, I would think you would be more empathetic with those that have them in the shop for upwards of 4 weeks, thats crazy!

At the same time, there are a few here who we all know who are over the top... but again... You have the right to come and go, post or not post, read or don't read. We all have the right to feed the trolls or not.

  14. Yes I have, and its certainly the worst piece of Apple software, most would agree.

As far as the software, yes I have seen worse, but you cannot tell me that there are not issues with it. To be honest, mine has been ok but holy crud, is it SLLLOOOOWWWW. And knowing the specs, it shouldn't be slow had this been properly coded and tested bt we already know it was rushed out the door.

The software isn't that bad. I've seen far far worse. Ever use ITunes on a slower machine?

If they would just set the thing up to do its "Maintenance Cycle" every time you turned it off, it would already fix 98% of the issues people have. Then they could focus on optimization.

  15. Hard to say. I mean it is significantly WAY more cost effective to pay a bunch of programmers $$$ to optimize the ish out of the software versus recall. The system in place should be able to handle the tasks it has been given with aplomb, but clearly the software sucks HARDCORE, and we should remember that it was Ford that designed it and not M$. If it were M$ that designed the software, they'd tell Ford they need better hardware and talk to you later. Because the ecosystem is all Ford here (software and they purchased the hardware) they are more like Apple... only minus the ability to squeeze every ounce out of hardware through optimized code.

There are several possibilities for an outcome, and both sides have had evidence alluding to them.

    1) New software thats optimized for the mediocre system

    2) New hardware that just has the power to handle junk.

    3) New software and new hardware for all.

    4) New software for some, hardware for others.

Number 1 seems plausible because folks are reporting software upgrades, but it seems to address bugs more so than optimizations. Number 2 is plausible because of this thread and others getting new units, although we have yet to hear if they are faster, and it should be noticeable. Number 3 would be best for us, but costly and worse case for Ford. Number 4 is how it is right now, and would be the worst solution from a servicing/ software support standpoint.

    Who knows?!?!?

Wilson... I have come up with a new term inadvertently while typing too fast. Instead of Ford, I keep typing Frod, which reads like fraud. I'm really not that pissed (mine unit has been "ok") but I thought you'd appreciate that. :)

Let me start this rumor now....

Ford will soon announce an across the board recall to have our systems upgraded to the new 1 ghz model.

This will help to speed up the stupid Flash animations on the menus. Whoo Hoo.

We'll have the same POS software, just running faster.

    rockon.gif

  16. I think he misunderstood or typed the wrong information. If you look at the original myFord Touch Specs below, you will see there are only 2 items that would benefit from a "boosting" up to 1 something.

    Freescale i.MX51 SOC

    ARM Cortex A8 @ 600mhz

    2D/3D graphics controller

    512MB RAM

    2GB NAND Flash Memory

    Specs found here (http://media.ford.com/images/10031/MyFordTouch_July10.pdf)

From reviewing information of the site about the Freescale i.MX51X line (http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/taxonomy.jsp?code=IMX51_FAMILY), they have units in this family line that have the capability to go up to 800mhz on the CPU side for consumers but it is downgraded to 600mhz on the automotive side, which leads me to believe this is our unit (http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=i.MX516&webpageId=123596270972270609633B&nodeId=0162468rH31143ZrDR633B&fromPage=tax).

Nothing is ever mentioned about RAM, of course the 1 number could be a RAM upgrade but I doubt that as 512MB is more than adequate considering most smartphones run extremely well with that amount while performing similar tasks. I do know that the ARM Cortex A8 has the ability to clock up to 1ghz, but it doesn't appear they sell any that clock that high on the i.MX51X line

So that would leave me to believe, based on the wording of "chip" in the original post, along with the above information that this is a processor upgrade from 600 to 1ghz. So if they don't have that capability in the i.MX51X line, and they are adding new units, they would need some that ran at 1ghz right? Which would mean a different family.

The new i.MX53X line is stated as "Currently sampling to high volume Automotive customers. Available through distribution early 2011." This line says it goes up to 1ghz, so that fits the bill but it says the automotive is downclocked to 800mhz, so that doesnt fit the bill.

So confusing... maybe someone with more hardware expierence can "chip" in, I'm more software.

Oh and by the way, the current Freescale i.MX51 SOC line does have a few Linux development folks poking at it, so I bet this thing could be hacked but that's beyond my skills and so far it doesn't appear there is critical mass.

  17. Dont know, but browsing on that slow system should be avoided... use the voice commands. If you are like me and cannot remember certain artist, etc, generate playist and load them onto your usb and go from there.

I am trying to figure out how to organize music on a flash drive.

I have a 16gb flash drive with just music on it. I have made folders (dance, pop, r&b, etc.) and put the files into those folders.

When i connect the USB drive into the car everythning works fine. I get album art, artist, genre etc.

But when i hit the "browse" button and go into a folder on the usb drive all of the songs are in the right folder but they are all out of order. They are not alphabetical like they are on the actual usb drive. They are in just any random order.

Is there anyway to get them alphabetical like they show on the USB drive?

    thanks for the help.

  18. Well then don't tell them you want an update, describe to them a problem.

Exactly! Your sync is "not working and it needs to be re-flashed or something and by the way did I mention that the sync site says to take it into a dealership to get it flashed? Just thought you should know"

  19. Version numbers are the same except for the letters. Now AJ Upgrade is BD

I'm headed to my dealership NOW! I'll keep you guys posted

    Good luck Wilsons66604!

Disappointing there are no release note so see if you can ask your dealer.

  20. It shows up on SyncMyRide, but it appears that you have to go to the dealer for the update. The disclaimer that a "dealer service fee may apply" kind of surprises me.

    BT4T-14D544-BD Version SYNC GEN 2

+ Dealer Install (Requires a visit to your local dealership. Dealer service fee may apply.)

Just a standard disclaimer that's added to everything these days.

  21. WARRING WARRING!!! Detailed and thorough post below!

Answering a question about warranties is tricky because if you break it down to its core component, an extended warranty plan is essentially insurance and insurance is essentially gambling and gambling by its very nature means that sometimes you win and sometimes you lose but more often than not... you lose.

So what are the odds? According to consumer reports dot org, 65% of those that purchased a warranty paid more for the plan then they ever got back in utilizing the warranty. So you have better odds at winning playing blackjack in Vegas than you do utilizing a warranty. Can these odds change over time or vary on other factors? Yes, but just know that warranty sellers don’t offer warranties to lose money spo the odds are padded in their favor.

So no warranty right? Not so fast. Since we are talking about gambling here, just like Vegas casinos which have statistical odds based of large chunks of data, so to do warranty issuers based on averages.

There are seven main factors (other than price) that should be considered when purchasing a warranty. In no order of importance; First are mechanical abilities and skills, or that of someone you know. Second is your style of driving. Third is proper maintenance of the car. Fourth is the manufactures reliability record. Fifth is the model a brand new never before seen model or a significant refresh? Sixth is your piece of mind. Seventh is ability to save money.

If you, or someone you know, is great with fixing at least minor issues with cars such as an alternator replacement, etc… well then you might add one strike to not getting an ESP. Do you drive like a bat out of heck or like an 18 year old male? Specifically, do you break and accelerate hard intentionally or even force via bad traffic in areas such as southern California, New York or Texas? Well might be a point in favor of getting an ESP because that wears hard on the car. Do you get your car serviced at the recommended service intervals, if not more? Then add a point in favor of not getting an ESP. Are you buying a brand that has a good reliability record? If so, an ESP might not be needed as much. Has this model never existed before or is this model a significant refresh over the previous year’s model? Might consider adding a point in favor of getting an ESP as any potential issues have yet to be discovered and hashed out and the workers are building new cars that might require new techniques to construct which equates to more errors which equates to more headaches for you. Do you suffer from anxiety or worry a lot about the unknown? Might be a point in favor of an ESP. Can’t seem to save a dime and are always grabbing for the credit card? Might be a point in favor of an ESP.

So how do you put the odds in your favor?

Obviously if you can work all the aforementioned main factors into you favor, the odds are REALLY in your favor. Another way is having the car for a period of time and not having any major issues which does appear to be your case and statistically equates to less major problems down the road. Saving the money and placing it into a savings account for “auto” that is safe but yields a high interest is a GREAT idea especially if nothing happens as you just helped fund your next new car down payment which lowers interest rates, etc, etc. The problem is most folks say they will save the money but either a) don’t do it or B) raid the fund. Don’t do either of those.

So final advice? Inconclusive because a) I don’t know you and your behavior and B) because sometimes, despite the odds, crazy random happenings… well... happen.

OK so after pondering your comment maybe I take that cash and put it in an interest bearing CD. Then I leave it there until I have a problem. Not bad advice and it would certainly be easier to move it from my savings account to a CD.
