Hey guys,

 

I just installed a Kenwood DNX8120 into my 2007 Ford Edge. I bought a wiring harness for the unit and plugged it into the factory wiring harness. Everything works fine except I am getting no output to the factory subwoofer. Any ideas?

First, I am assuming the wiring is at least similar if not the same as my 2008 Edge (SEL+ w/ factory sub). There are three separate plugs containing the wiring for the stereo. The subwoofer wiring is in the smallest of the three plugs (has 8 connection terminals, w/ 4 used for sub, and 4 unused).

Not knowing any detail about your new head unit or wiring harness, I could only guess what could be wrong, but perhaps this will help you locate the problem.

I can put a switch there if you would like.

 

Actually I could. I designed the circuit boards that are used in those two switch assemblies.

My previous employer of 16 years was a third tier supplier to Ford.

The same boards with different colored lights and switch options were also used in Explorers, Mustangs, and other vehicles for a few years.

 

Airbag would never be allowed to be defeated with the push of a simple switch. Too much liability.

When they first put that option in pick-up trucks it had to be controlled by a key

A little late to explain the punchline now, but I was obviously not sharing enough of the situation for others to follow what I was saying.

It was on a long drive from the KC area back to Ohio where I grew up (and where my dad still lives). Our conversation had drifted onto one of those topics where dad was not able to resist the urge to offer some sage advice. It was then that I reached over and started enthusiastically trying to activate the "Pass Airbag Off" "button". When he did not immediately stop with his current topic, I made some statement to the effect that this darn button doesn't work!

Once he realized I was jokingly telling him I got the point and he can hush, we got a good laugh out of it and moved on to another topic.

Sorry for butchering it before, but it made perfect sense in my mind!

It is only a light. The pass. seat measures the pass's weight and turns the bag on/off acc'dly.

OK, so I was not very clear in my attempt at humor. It took my dad a little bit to figure out what I was doing too, but he did get a laugh when he figured it out

OK, so I have not been here for several months, and this reply is a bit late, but along the lines of what buttons do ...

Shortly after getting my Edge last January, I was riding down the road with my father as a passenger, when I felt the need to use the "Pass Airbag Off" button, but it is not functional in my vehicle. A friend claims it is only an indicator light, but I am still holding out hope I can get it fixed! :shades:

Now that I have my new 2008 Edge SE I want to add an outside temperature and compass gauge. Any suggestions for one that is wireless and battery operated?

 

Has anyone tried the Wayfinder V2020 Wireless Digital Vehicle Compass and Advanced Thermometer?

Just asking, since you did not specifically mention it .... you are looking for a replacement since you are unhappy with the factory compass and temp functions? Neither is of great importance to me, so it was a while before I even knew they were both already there is why I ask.

Is there a fuse for the reverse sensing system?

According to the wiring manual, the fuse which handles the PAM (Parking Aid Module) also handles the AWD module, stability control sensor cluster, and heated seat modules. It is labeled as F35 in the diagram, but I don't have a flashlight handy to go verify if it is labeled the same in the fuse panel.

Not sure if it would be crippling to have all those disabled or not, just relaying what the diagram says ...

Just wanted to pass this along in case anyone else was looking. I found a post somewhere saying Helm, Inc. was the place to go for wiring diagrams, so I looked them up. A quick search on their site (www.helminc.com), phone call to place the order (800-782-4356), $70, and a couple days later, and voila .... complete wiring manual (part # FCS1458908 if you call them) is now in hand!!

I am still digging through things, but it looks like it will be relatively easy to locate everything I am after in terms of wiring to tap into (factory microphone, satellite antenna, steering wheel controls, etc.) The interface to my AVIC-Z2 will not be quite as easy, but at least I have a start now!

So, the 8T4T-18K931 would definitely work w/Sync? I found an entry on eBay which is titled: NEW FORD EDGE MKX NAVIGATION KIT 07 08 NAV. It lists Bluetooth, satellite, back up camera, ipod integration, hd capability and video capability. It shows a video of the nav radio after a video interface installation. I'm entirely skeptical but at the same time this would do everything I'm looking for IF Sync would still work w/it.

 

I've got an '08 Limited w/Sync installed but now I'm wishing that I'd gotten the touch screen interface. I've been looking heavily at the Avic-Z2 but am reluctant to get it because of all of the issues listed w/the steering wheel controls. At the same time, I really like the unit and would forego Sync if I knew it would integrate w/out issues. What I'd really like is a factory nav that would work w/Sync and also plays DVDs with a video out to connect to headrest monitors. (My kids are too young to read to put in a DVD and use a remote to navigate the menu to play the disk w/the headrests w/built-in DVDs.)

 

I think I've read every post in this forum about the Z2/D3 and the lack of support for video and/or getting an OEM to work after the fact w/Sync but I'm still waffling. If anyone can shed any light either way I'd be very grateful! Thanks.

Unless it has SYNC built in, you will no longer have it after the install. The way it was explained to me when I told the dealer I wanted my old truck back after losing the functionality is that SYNC is built into the stereo. Of course, it would not be the first thing the dealer was wrong about.

I have had little luck in locating any of the wiring info that would help you, but as for the steering wheel control adapter ... current products I have found only handle part of the setup. The dealer that did mine used the only product I have been able to find so far, and it leaves me with dead buttons on the steering wheel so far - namely the voice command button and the phone button.

I know it is possible to activate those controls remotely, since the wired remote you can get from Pioneer supports them, but I don't exactly want my steering wheel controls to be a cheesy little remote that straps onto the wheel. Will post if I find anything more, but have had no luck as yet with Ford, and have had some other priorities to attend to first

Why do I feel like I am going into uncharted territory?

I have started down the path of doing this myself, so please let me know if you find something. My case is a little different, since I already have a third party microphone hanging from the A-pillar, thanks to my own stupidity in letting a dealer sell me something they knew pretty much zip about. I have an AVIC-Z2 installed, and will be looking to splice into the factory wiring for the microphone in the mirror to replace the extremely ugly one they gave me. Not much progress on it yet, but will post when I get somewhere.

The Z2 itself has some voice support built in. You do lose the SYNC product, which from my limited exposure to the two so far, may be a bit friendlier system (but I am still learning the ins and outs with the Z2). As for the steering wheel controls, I have yet to find a product that will just plug in to allow use of all of them, but the PAC SWI PS does hook up several of them.

I had a wire spliced to the factory sirius radio antenna for my AVIC D3 and sat receiver. The stock sirius receiver is in the back of the vehicle on the far back of the spare tire. It worked great. The nav gps antenna was put under the dash. Plastic/wood wont stop a gps signal and it worked great also. I had my ipod adapter in my glove comparment also. I guess u can drill a hole where the stock usb would be and put in the round connector first and fish it out. Good luck with microphone. My PESWIPS wheel controller woulnt work all the time for the vol up. Dont konw if it was a bad adapter but it would work only sometimes.

Thanks for the info. It is nice to know I can place the GPS antenna under the dash, so there is one less thing to worry about concealing.

I have not torn into it yet, but looking through the install guide for the deck, it looks like the microphone uses a basic mini-plug, so it may be as simple as locating the wires for the factory one and splicing in a connector (will have to look into the specs on both mics to make sure, though).

For the iPod cable, I am hoping I can splice wires so the existing USB port is my connection, rather than drill through and use the Pioneer cable. I would then use a standard iPod cable to connect to the USB port when I want it.

For the satellite antenna, the unit they installed has XM built in for the NavTraffic (sp?) service, so my Sirius tuner is unused equipment at this point. Again, need a little more researh to see if there is any reason I can't just hook up the Sirius antenna and pull out the one they added.

As for the steering wheel controls, maybe I will get lucky and someone will introduce a more robust adapter, but it will still bug me to no end as long as I have dead buttons sitting there.

First off, thanks for sharing a lot of good information out here, it has been quite informative reading. Now on to my situation ...

For starters, I made a huge mistake by letting the dealer pressure me into taking a vehicle from the lot , with the promise they would add a NAV system that was almost exactly like the factory one. Upon being promised everything would still be fully integrated and work seemlessly, I agreed to it. What they installed was a Pioneer AVIC-D3, which has no voice command support, so I complained and they upgraded it to the Z2, which does have voice commands, though I am still not convinced it is as robust as the factory Sync system.

After further complaint of having a brand new vehicle with a bunch of dead buttons on the steering wheel, they installed a PAC SWI-PS, which does activate most of the buttons. The main reason for my post is that this steering wheel control adapter does not provide support for the voice activation button, which conveniently has a nearly identical icon for the onscreen and steering wheel buttons. Anyone know of an adaptor that would provide full support of steering wheel controls?

This one is what I am tackling first, although others on the list include:

1) Finding a way to use the factory microphone in the rear view mirror, instead of the one they left hanging from the A pillar.

2) Relocating the satellite and NAV antennas from the awkward location at the upper, driver-side corner of the windshield when a factory antenna for Sirius was already installed in the rear.

3) Wiring the iPod cable that currently hangs loose in the glove box to the factory installed USB port in the console.

I am very happy with the vehicle, but very unhappy with myself for falling for a dealer selling products they know nothing about. To their credit, they have promised to handle the aesthetic issues next time I am in town, but I really don't trust them, and would just as soon handle it myself at this point. I have never really messed with car stereo installs before, but am a quick study at most things, so looks like a good time to learn!
