  1. Hesitate to start new, but I've been thru treads in this section & my questions about wheels for Edge aren't addressed. Did a +1 back in ’85 & dealer who wouldn’t sell something unless it was pretty much spot on has retired. A lot can happen in 24 years & I may be a little outa’ the loop. When looking for new wheels & tires, what are spec limits? For instance, my Edge uses wheel with 40mm offset. I’m looking at wheel with 38mm, which means it “sticks out” (boy that sounds technical) an extra 2 mm. Edge wheel is 7.5” wide. So an 8” wheel will add another ¼’ (6.35mm) to the 2mm for a total of 8.35mm or about 5/16”. Any problem with my math? Any problem with that amount of “stick-out?” No rubbing, shouldn’t load bearings & I do have mud flaps. What say the members? Wheel this be OK? :headscratch:

If I go to tire/wheel dealer website & plug in ’07 Edge, AWD, 18” (have 17s now) can I trust  that site will return only wheels for my car?

I & other seasoned geezers are of an age & from a time when we "didn't need no stinking" TPMS. Heck, we still have & use tire gages. I’ve been checking tire air for twice as long as some of U'll have been breathing air. :yup: What happens if I buy new set wheels & tires, but choose not to spring for TMPS bands, cradles, transmitters, etc? (After all, I am on a fixed income.) :hysterical: Will I be pestered with all sorts of bells, buzzers, whistles & warnings from the air Nazi? :redcard: Seems I read somewhere dealer can shut off TPMS, but that doesn’t seem correct since we’re dealing with a NHTSA :stop: safety feature..

Darned emoticons, they're like peanuts, U can't eat just one. :hysterical2: See, what did I just say?

I can't answer your size questions but when swapping wheels and you have TPMS, all you have to do is buy the bands and the garage that is swapping out the wheels will be able to transfer the other components of TPMS to the new bands. I will provide a website that I bought my bands from. I think I paid $70. It is worth it just to buy the bands, let the service garage do their thing and you still have the TPMS working for you. The bands are permanently affixed to the wheel but all the other components are transferable.

  2. I recieved an email back from them. They said that they have never sold an emblem for an Edge or had any requests. He did not even have the exact size. I sent him the sizes for the front and rear. He woould make them if I wanted them but it appears to be a pain to remove them, especially the rear one. So I found a site that makes vinyl decals that cover the logo. I ordered front and back, will let you know how they fir and what they loook like when I recieve them.

What is the website you ordered the vinyl decals from?

  3. I have a set, almost brand new, of 20" inch wheels for sale for Ford Edge. Having a change of heart and want a different design. Bought in early March, 2009. Click on link below to see picture and original cost. Asking $175 each.

    http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/f...&vid=013214

If the link does not work, go to www.discounttiredirect.com, search on wheels for Ford Edge 20". The wheels are Privat Netz, the forged grey ones.

  4. I have a set of 20" chrome clad wheels from a 2008 Edge Limited FWD for sale. Mint condition with about 6,000 miles on them. Will not include TPMS. I am swapping them out for a grey painted wheel to match my Edge. Will let go for $125 each. In Northeast Ohio area. Will ship for additional cost.

  5. Hello again all :)

    Ok, here's the deal.

I received my new wheels today

    post-1289-1189123004_thumb.jpg

    They're 20x8.5"

I ordered my tires (after much price comparison and reading user reviews)

    TIRES

Check those user reviews if you're in the market!

I've found a place with TPMS straps etc HERE

    Great find I think!

As I ended up getting the tires and wheels separately I did not have to purchase new TPMS sensors.

Of course I will have to get the straps.

    My question is this:

Do I need to buy the sensor clips and/or cradles as well?

I know I can use the OEM sensors and I know I need the straps but I haven't heard or read any discussion concerning these additional parts.

Any and all ASAP (knowledgeable) replies very much appreciated ;)

    Of course all replies welcome.

Did you just order the straps and did they fit okay? All other TPMS parts were reusable? I am have a difficult time having this done because I do not want to pay $50 plus for the strap kit from Ford.

  6. ok, so finally i have found some wheels i like, and want to know if anybody on here is running them. they are from Zinik, they have several different styles i like, but what i want to know is about the quality. how well are they made? do you need to run hub rings? will these wheels cause my car to vibrate at highway speeds? i have run aftermarket wheels on other FWD cars before and they all vibrated like crazy causing me to go back to the stock wheels, and i don't want to do that with the Edge. i appreciate any help. thanks!

Do you have any pics of the ones you selected? I have been looking at after market and I cannot decide on style. Replacing the 20" chrome clad with either painted sliver or considering black. My Edge is Vapor Silver.

  7. Version 1.1

This release includes Connectivity Enhancements which improve the reliability of both Bluetooth and USB connections to SYNC. The Bluetooth enhancements improve the stability of hands-free calls, call waiting, caller ID, multiple call handling and other mobile phone features. The USB enhancements improve support for media players and the playing of file formats and podcasts. (Part Number: 9L3T-14D544-AC) 9L3T-14D544-AC

This Sync update requires a visit to your local dealership. Please print the Request for Sync Upgrade form before calling an authorized dealership to make a service appointment. Be sure to bring the printed form with you to your dealership. Dealer service fee may apply. this part kind of sucks...

    see it over at SyncMyRide.com

Regarding the Sync upgrade. I took someone's advice from this forum. To avoid paying for the upgrade, told the dealership that I was having connectivity issues with my MP3 and wanted upgrade to fix problem. I was having issues and getting an error message 'Program Content Error' on some of the songs. Long story short, uploaded upgrade, did diagnostics and found the internal USB cable to be defective and did not charge me for the upgrade.

  8. Hi msgtia. :D Concerning the wheels, it never hurts to ask the Dealer if they will do it. However, those people who were successful in getting their Dealer to agree to swap wheels, generally made the agreement before they purchased their vehicles. Then the Dealer swapped the wheels before the car was ever driven off the lot. Not after they had been purchased and been driving for a while.

It is hard to explain, but the way the Warranty System works, the Dealer will need to replace your defective wheels with the same wheel style, or they will not be reimbursed by Ford. Unless the Dealer is willing to work around that hurdle, it is doubtful that they will take a loss on the wheels, since the ones you have are defective (and used) and can not be put on another vehicle.

There are ways to do it, but the question is whether the Dealer will be willing to go through the trouble for a sale they already made.

However, like I already said, it can not hurt to ask.

    Good luck. :beerchug:

PS - Sorry I did not immediately notice that you asked this question nearly a month ago. I assume you already know the answer to your question, for better or worse.

    [/quote

Thanks for the response. You're right on with the warranty issue thought. I did ask and they said that due to warranty issues, they can only replace with same wheels. I thought I would give it a shot. Looking at after market wheels now.

  9. Starting a new thread from THIS one.

So I Googled across this guy who does some absolutely amazingly beautiful tinted tail lights.

A completely unique process he is calling Unique Coatings.

I found him on the Ford Focus forum. After PMing back and forth a bit he directed me to the Dodge forum HERE, where he is a sponsor and has a section devoted entirely to this work.

Toward the bottom of the Sponsors section, look for Unique Coatings.

In speaking with him he can and will tint Edge tails.

He went to Ford and looked at them then replied about how they are made, adding that due to the way they are constructed leaving the reverse light section untinted isn't an option for us. That's ok with me as plenty of light passes through the tinting.

He offers a core program but as he's never done an Edge before does not have a set.

For those models he does have core sets for he can ship an already tinted set out either immediately (and refund the core charge after receiving the customer's original set), or a customer can ship their tails and he will ship a tinted set the day after he receives them. Or, of course, a customer can ship their tails and wait while he does the work. Turnaround approximately 5-6 days or so, counting ship time to and from. The last option will of course mean a customer would have to do without their Edge for some days while awaiting delivery.

His method, which I pasted from a PM in the top-most linked thread here, involves a unique dipping method followed by the application of an automotive clearcoat which he will then wet-sand and buff.

According to his information in a 20+ page thread at the Dodge forum he lastly waxes the tails before shipping.

Once installed, and after a short time to allow for proper curing, the tails can be treated as one would their paint as far as washing and waxing.

I located some discount OEM tail lights for the Edge and sent him the links. Looking at about $300 or so, not counting shipping, to purchase OEM replacements.

He has suggested that some of us can get together and pitch in on the initial cores.

This is because he understandably can't take the loss on a single customer such as myself... and I would prefer not to spend $300 over and above the tinting cost then put the spares in a box.

However if six of us would pitch $50 each he is willing to purchase OEM tails and commence with the tinting, refunding each of us in turn our $50 as he would a core.

His price quote is $95 for the left and right tail light assemblies and $30 for the third light at the top. Plus shipping - and he covers the first $15 for shipping as well. This price would be to send in your assemblies and wait.

The price for a core option is slightly higher than if one were to outright buy a set from him (when looking at the pricing he's laid out for all sorts of models at the Dodge forum too) - $150 for all three tails on an Edge.

So, I started this new thread to see if there are five other interested parties here on this forum who would be interested in going in with me on this.

I am not out to and will not make a dime on this man's time and beautiful work.

I snagged several images from the other forums to give a clear image of how good these things look. They are of several different models and some include the untinted reverse light, which I remind is not an option for the Edge tails.

Tons more images and a whole bunch of satisfied customers can be found at the Dodge forum linked above.

Not one single customer has not been totally 100% satisfied with these.

I should also add that I will be having my tail lights done by this gentleman regardless of whether or not we can come up with the six people necessary to start an Edge core program.

Check out my pics. Went with the painting technique. Had a shop do it that specializes in tinting windows and other custom stuff.

  10. I have tinted my own tail lights using transparent Black paint and clear coating after the three coats I applied dried and I am amazed at the results. I will post a few pictures, but if you want to save a lot of money and are not afraid to do it yourself then for about $15.00 in material you can tint your own lights. I got the tip from a custom shop here that tints tail lights and emblems and they use different transparent paints but the funny thing is that it is Testers Model Paint they use, I walked into their shop and watched how they did it. It is really easy and you can add coats to make as dark or light as you want too. If you mess up it is easy to come off as well, took me twice to get it right since I had a run in the paint the first time, but that was my fault trying to rush it.

If you have any questions feel free to write, but they also use the Transparent Red to make tail lights more red, but Testers Has a lot of transparent paint and this is what is used on the lights so the tail lights can still shine thru.

Just had my tail lights tinted using the paint process. Had a shop do it. You can do various shades and they had a clear coat to protect. Posted pics. Having a shop do it cost me $110.

  11. Has anyone taken a close look at the 20" chrome clad wheels? It certainly looks like there is two pieces, the aluminum wheel with a chrome covering. I have had a 2008 MKX for 3 months and some one at a gas station told me to take a close look at the wheels. The chrome part can be flexed slightly. I am not sure what that part is made of. A relative bought a 2008 Navigator with very similar looking wheels but they are one entire piece. On the MKX the option price is $895, the Navigator is $1495. Are the wheels sold in two pieces? And could the chrome covering considered a hubcap, a $895 set of hubcaps???

I have had one replaced already due to chipping, peeling and I had only 600 miles on it. I am now having all four replaced due to discoloring (brass color showing up). I do not anticipate those lasting as well. There was an Edge in the showroom at my dealership that had the brass discoloring on the wheels already. At least the dealership does not give me any issues with replacement. They did tell me that the wheels are on back order. Has anyone asked their dealership if they can swap out wheels for different ones instead of constantly getting chrome clad replaced because nothing is going to change...the design is flawed.

  12. I took my 08 Limited FWD Edge in for first service with 6,500 miles. Two primary issues, other then getting an oil change was discoloring on the chrome clad wheels and wanted the Sync upgrade. I know the wheels and the Sync upgrade have been major topics on this forum. First the wheels, I had no problem with the Ford dealership replacing all four wheels. I was actually surpised considering they had an Edge on the showroom floor that had the brass discoloring already on the wheels. Anyway, they are on backorder. Dealership told me that there seems to be alot of issues high activity reordering the wheels. On to the Sync upgrade.

Question. Has anyone tried swapping the chrome clad wheels for some other wheel through their Ford Dealership, offering to pay any price difference? With the new wheels coming out for the 2009 Edge, just curious if that made any sense.

  13. hmm.. certainly does not sound right and might want to hit the dealer. if it is truly random, and not when the nav system is speaking to you and just like POW cut out sound, I would say it is an issue

the only time mine fades in/out is when the nav system is speaking directions to me it fades down the sound and moves it to the back. same with phone call coming in or in use, sound of radio or music or whatever was playing gets muted. other than that, no sound cut out.

Would you believe that your response just made me realize that I did not terminate a destination and although there was no voice command on directions, it was still lowering the speaker sound. You're a genius. As soon as I read your reply, it immediately came to me. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated.

  14. 2008 Ford Edge Limited owner. Very cool and love driving it. Have 1,200 miles on it and noticed that the front speakers seem to cut out randomly for a few seconds when either the radio, cd or phone is putting out sound. Can't seem to find a pattern. It does it whether the speed volume adjustment is on or off. Wanted to push out to fellow Edge owners before making a trip to dealer if it continues. Very annoying.
