So far these look great! When I placed my order for the old style lights, I received this message from Dan almost immediately:

    Hi John,

Thank you for your Bright TRAX LED puddle light pack and Ford Edge Shadow Black LED taillight order. I have a bit of a problem though. We just shipped the last set of Shadow Black Edge taillights that I had in stock. However, we just came out with a new version of the Shadow Black taillights that is not up on our website yet.
We call this new version our Shadow Black SPORT taillight. It is the exact same taillight, but has a slightly smoke tinted red lens. I have attached a photo of our new SPORT lens compared to the standard lens version. Again, the SPORT taillight looks and functions exactly the same, the only difference is the slightly darker red lens.
We have the SPORT tails in stock and can ship it out right away. If you want to wait for the standard lens Shadow Black tails to be back in stock, it will be about 4 weeks.
I will wait to ship your order until I hear from you. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Thanks, in advance.
    Best regards,
    Dan Smith

I told him send me the news ones ASAP!

I really like the -new- dark red color and the install is super easy, they include instructions with the taillights, but it's very basic. If you've changed an automotive bulb before you can do this install in about 10 minutes.

  2. It was a compromise with my Wife. We both like performance vehicles, but we hadn't had something "nice" to drive for a while, and weren't ready for a "sports car." The Edge Sport has all the looks and the engine to back it (even though it weighs 4,000+ pounds.) I consistently get 20+ MPGs, enjoy the interior, and nothing matches it's looks for the price point.

  3. I was still thinking about this.

If someone did want to take legal action, wouldn't it be easiest to prove that the fluid doesn't last for 100,000 miles? If the dealership isn't willing to change the fluid, or if Ford is telling Dealerships it isn't needed, doesn't this escalate the issue? Then on top of that it seems pretty common to "cook" the PTU fluid in to black sludge by 30,000-50,000 miles, where the entire PTU fails due to heat?

    The solution is pretty simple.

  4. @FordService, I do feel Ford needs to acknowledge this.

This would be my ideal situation, if Ford was to take action:

    • First by adding the PTU fluid change and maintenance to the scheduled (reoccurring) 30,000 mile service. With recommended checkups scheduled every 10,000 miles.
    • Second by blanket covering all PTUs (up til the date the first steps are taken) with extended coverage for repair and/or replacement, up to 100,000 miles.

This would mitigate almost all of their customer service issues, legal or otherwise.

  5. Where the handle of the wrench is pointing is where you stick your hands, and feed the tube. There is plenty of room on that side. You basically reach up and over the subframe and the heat shield. I did it, it didn't get on anything as you can see, while lying on my back in the garage.

These pictures were taken while I was laying on my back, looking straight up at the PTU, in my garage. I have the 3.7L.

  6. The rear diff caused me many more problems than the PTU. The PTU has so little fluid, if you're lucky it won't be burnt goo, the fluid should just pump out easily, and refiling should happen without a mess.

I should post a picture of my garage floor, with all the splatter from the rear diff, and no mess from the PTU. :)(I'll do a better job with the tarp placement on the rear diff next time.)

  7. What engine do you have in your Edge?

On my 2011 Edge with the 3.5 I do not have much room to access my PTU drain plug without moving the exhaust pipe it seems.

I can use a long handle socket I suppose, but it looks like it would be a very time consuming and messy affair trying to doing without just moving the exhaust to the side on my 2011 with the 3.5 engine.

I can take a picture if needed. I have the 3.7l, so the exhaust could be different, but I still had room to work around it.

    Picture this:

Laying on your back looking up at the drain plug. You can place the handle of the ratchet facing towards the front of car, while positioning the 3/8" head of the wrench so it slides in to the drain plug. It should only be torqued to 25-30ft/lbs, so it should loosen fairly easy.

When looking at the PTU, and drain plug, there was a sub frame in between my body and the PTU. I was able to reach down (towards my legs) and around (above) the sub frame, with plenty of room to feed the drain hose.

  8. Just finished the PTU and rear differential. My PTU seal was serviced last June, I'm certain the fluid was fully changed then. So when I changed the fluid it came out dark, but was still easy to pump out. I was worried about over filling, but I think I added about 12oz.

The rear differential fluid was grey and milky, and was much harder to pump out. I tried to use the 1/8" tubing to pump it back in but gave up and used some 1/4" tubing, which sped everything up. I'm not sure how full it was but I filled it till it drained out.

I did check everything while I was under there, and my rear passenger CV housing seal is seaping a bit. My Edge is a CPO, and still under the 5/60 with 43,000 miles, is this something to worry about, or am I asking for more problems having them tear in to the differential?

Doing the PTU was really simple, I didn't even need the 3/8" wobble. I just stuck the wrench up there. I laid on my back and had plenty of room for my hands.
