  1.

No need to pre-rinse the car when using ONR. Unless you were mudding they day before.

It's not mud it's just thick collection of dust at some spots after a couple days raining in the past few weeks here. If I pre-soak the car as in Garry Dean's method then I don't think I'll need water.

  2. Yea I'm gonna have to get a cheap step stool.

As for the wash itself, we are having severe drought here in San Diego (CA in general). Not sure if they'll give me a ticket if I use a hose to wash a car, but I don't want to waste water anyway. So Optimum No Rinse Wash & Wax is on the way. I'll probably have to rinse the car before doing the actual wash though, but still water is saved compared to a fully traditional wash. I think with rinseless wash, if I try standing on the door step I might be able to reach and cover the whole roof since there's no water to make a mess.

By the way the vista roof on the Edge is magnificent.

  3. Never seen an over inflated tire wear in the middle. I've HEARD of it happening. Never seen it. I've run 40-44 in the VWs for years and they always wear perfectly and have no traction problems. Not saying the Edge won't as I have 350 miles of experience with it so far.

I've seen under inflated wear on the edges however.

Wander? Some call that responsive :)

I did deflate the tires from 40 to 37 last night. I noticed a smoother ride this morning, and a little less (barely noticeable) road wandering. Not sure how this affect mpg. I've read that running 3-4psi above manufacturer's recommendation can increase mpg a tad.

As long as the pressure is above 35, the tires are not under-inflated, correct? Or is it something about the tire's spec? I just don't want to do damage/excessive wear to the tires, even when a little rougher ride is the tradeoff.

  4. I should also have mentioned that running over-inflated causes road wander, your always having to coerect the steering to stay straight. .

This is exactly what's going on right now! Thanks for pointing this out! I'll deflate the tires after dinner when they have cooled off.

  5. The door's sticker says 35psi. I'm currently having 40psi cold (42psi after running a couple dozen miles) and feel like the ride is a little rough. I might take it down to 38/39 cold. Do you think this is in a reasonable range when considering mpg and tire wear? What are you currently having?

  6. Thanks for the suggestions! The Werner Work Platform seems to be a good choice for this kind of work, since you can step back and forth on the platform without having to move it like you would a ladder. The thing is damn expensive though.

I'd like to wash my own vehicle once in a while, at least while the honeymoon lasts :) I might just pay for hand car wash if I find my effort is not really worth it though.

  7. It will automatically apply a tiny bit of engine braking for small hills if you tap the brake. Once you're in S and using the paddles it won't allow you to shift to a gear that's too low for your speed. Use the brakes to slow down to the desired speed and downshift to the lowest gear possible to maintain that speed. Depending on the grade you might need to assist with the brakes periodically - that's ok as long as you aren't riding the brakes all the time. Use them for 10 seconds or so then get off them for a minute or so and they should be fine.

Thanks! Sounds great that's what I thought how it works.

  8. I'm almost sure this isn't exactly the right sub-forum for this questions, but couldn't find a more appropriate one. So please move the topic as you see fit.

I just started leasing a Ford Edge Sport 2.7L EcoBoost. My question is how do I go downhill using engine braking? When I switch the gear lever to the S position, I can't downshift past gear 3 for example from a speed of 40mph or so. Do I apply the brake to slow down more then downshift further to say gear 2 and stay there? Will the engine brake kicks in or will the gear automatically go up as I gain speed going downhill, even in the S position? I suppose I can test it out tomorrow on the way to work but just wanted to see your experience with this. Thanks!
