  1. Same thing just happened to my 2011 Edge that I bought last week.. I was told by the shop that the part alone is $3,000 from Ford. I found it online for $2,000, but the labor will be over $600.

I had the shop close it as best they could, but it's still lifted up in the back, so it's not safe to drive if there's a chance of rain (which is daily where we live).

I'm refusing to pay that amount for the full assembly just because of a failed piece of plastic that was a result of poor engineering. I'm contacting Ford about this issue, though I'm not sure what good it will do..

  2. Update -

The dealership offered for us to drive the Edge to their shop and they would "close" the vista roof for us. Not fix it, just close it. So I said no thank you and asked the shop that the vehicle is currently at to close it.

I'm not giving up though. I'm going to contact Ford about this issue until I get some kind of response. This plastic piece that broke is just poor engineering, and us consumers should NOT have to pay $3,000 for a part that just closes the sunroof and has known issues. They need to find a more economic solution to this problem, and make it available at a more reasonable cost.

  3. Here is my experience with the panoramic ‘moon’ roof……I have a 2011 Edge LTD AWD with 160k miles. Has been a good car with some problems with SYNC, power steering pump/return hoses and now the roof. Ever since owning the car the panoramic roof would work slow. I had the dealer check it out on several occasions and they cleaned the track and lubed the rails. Worked for a few months and then the same thing. Decided not to use the moon roof as I though it would be problems in the long run….Oh was I so right. I can count on both hands how many times I opened/closed the roof thru the years of owning the car. About 3 weeks ago I opened the roof and it struggled real hard to close; finally failed without closing with the drive cables hanging out of my headliner. I tried everything but could not close it. Had to take it to the dealer and was floored…..service repair tech gave me options:

    1. Time to get a new car…..nope that is not going to happen.
    2. Repair the roof…..approx $4k because it can’t be fixed.

Told him what about option “C”…..just close the roof and I won’t use it and he responded with, the roof is damaged and cannot be closed.

So I decided to have the roof replaced and then the tech told me it would be wise to install both motors as it will take 5 hrs labor to replace them latter plus mine may be on the way out. Quoted me a price of $400 for one motor and $300 for the other. Told him I’ll get the motors because that is excessively high. Picked up both motors for $315. Now all said and done the roof works like a champ.

Bottom line, would I ever purchase another Ford with a panoramic roof? Hummm……..I think you know the answer. So my question to everyone, has anyone else experience similar problems with their panoramic roof? I read some buzz (not sure if is true) about recalls but like I said nothing confirmed.

FYI….this new install is guaranteed for 2 yrs.

I'm going through the same thing with my 2011 right now. The only difference is that I bought it 10 days ago.. i was quoted $4,000 to repair it and was told the same thing, you can't just close the roof and not replace the entire assembly.

To say that this whole thing has been ridiculous would be an understatement. The limited warranty refused to cover the part, and the dealership has been no help. So if I want the roof to close, even if I never open it again, it's going to cost me $4k.. Unbelievable.

  4. Sorry to hear. Yes, it can get VERY expensive to replace the whole vista roof. What part broke exactly, is it the guides or the little "feet" at the end of the guides, or ...

From what the repair shop has told me (and I'd really like to just go look at it while they have the whole thing taken apart) it's the piece that is attached to a cable that pulls the glass forward. Why the entire frame would have to be replaced, I have no idea.

It seems to me like you could just replace the cable and clip and be good to go. Or at the very least, rig something up to attach the cable to the glass again. I've just never heard of a part being so expensive for something that is not vital to the operation of the vehicle..

  5. I'm not sure if anyone will be able to help, but I had to get my story out there. My wife and I bought a used 2011 Edge SEL last week (10 days ago to be exact). It has the vista panoramic roof, which was a big selling point for us.

We've opened and closed the roof about 5 or 6 times since we bought it last week. Last night, my wife went to close it and we heard a snap. A plastic clip of some kind fell into the passenger seat. Now the glass is fully open and can't be closed. All of the parts are moving, but the glass stays in the open position.

This morning I called the warranty 1800 number because I knew we had a 90 limited warranty. They set up a claim and told me to take it to a shop to diagnose the problem. The shop called me and told me the part needed to fix the issue is $3,000.. How is that even possible?? So I called the warranty number again and they informed me that the part would not be covered under our warranty and that I should call the dealership since it was such a recent purchase. Go figure..

So I call the dealership and tell the sales manager what happened. He basically told me they had no way of knowing that the part would break when they sold me the vehicle, and that there is nothing that they can do for me.

So here I am 10 days after purchasing a vehicle (in cash might I add) and I already have to dump $4,000 into it. I've had transmissions rebuilt for far less than this stupid "track" part will cost.

I know these vista roofs have been notorious for causing problems, but has anyone had the same issue and been able to resolve it? I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on a "new" vehicle 10 days after purchase, but I don't have much of a choice if I can't even close the stupid roof.. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
