  1. I’m not arguing whether it’s a good idea or possible given the other parameters.

     

    I’m just telling you that’s the definition of tow capacity per Ford.

     

    I'm not trying to make it into an argument either.

     

    However, I think Ford is wrong to state a number like, 3500lbs, without giving proper/critical details. It's not just Ford either, it's all manufacturers. In this class of SUV and most minivans they are all rated at 3500lbs. Seems like a marketing number rather than a safely, proven, actual number.

  2. Look at the first chart - it says Maximum Loaded Trailer Weight. Doesn’t say anything about the vehicle contents.

    Thing is, you'll be hard pressed, I'd say almost impossible, to find a trailer over 2000lbs that has the correct tongue weight and with all other weight factors added.

     

    If I went into a 2500lbs trailer the tongue weight would be around 230-250lbs. Now I'm way over the tongue weight and over-loaded with a family of 4, full tank of gas and no gear inside the Edge. So i agree the Edge can tow 3500lbs, probably more, however, the tongue weight is where it gets overloaded.

     

    It's like people who put slide-in campers into an 1/2 truck, eg: F-150. Big No no. You need a 3/4 ton like a F-250.

     

    Safety is #1, not only for others on the road but, for you as well.

  3. But you said the factory tow rating included all the vehicle passengers and cargo and that’s simply not correct. It’s only the weight of the trailer and contents.

     

    Now if you’re saying that you would not want to tow that much with additional weight in the tow vehicle that’s a completely different story. Don’t confuse factory specs with your personal recommendations.

     

    The tow capacity can't distinguish weight in the vehicle and the trailer. Weight added is weight added. Factory tow pack is rated at 3500lbs. That means Any weight added to the vehicle from time of purchase should be subtracted from max tow weight. So, 3500lbs max minus 2450lbs loaded trailer minus 775lbs people and extras in vehicle = 275lbs below Maximum weight.

     

    Not exceeding tongue weight is also very important. Interior load capacity of the Edge is 909lbs. Add your interior load to trailers tongue weight to see if you are in spec.

  4. You’re thinking of GCWR - Gross Combined Weight Rating - which includes both the tow vehicle, trailer and all contents of both.

    Or GVWR - Gross Vehicle Weight Rating - which is the max weight of the tow vehicle not including the trailer.

     

    Tow rating is the maximum weight of what you are towing.

     

    I've towed with a 14 Edge 3.5L (Factory tow pack), 15 Edge 3.5L (3rd party hitch) and a 16 Escape 2.0L EB (Factory tow pack).

     

    Our tent trailer (with brakes BTW) is 2450lbs loaded (that's gear, propane tank, battery, 2nd 3cuft fridge, trailer rack and 2 bikes, etc.)

    Then as a family of 4 add 550lbs, gas tank full is 150lbs and some gear 75 odd pounds, total; 775lbs approx.

     

    I would not want to see another 400lbs (or more) behind the hitch. Even the 14 with factory tow pack would be stressed. Maybe on dead flat regions might be ok. For mountain passes where we are, no way. Ford numbers on paper can say what they want, just from driving these 3 vehicles in towing situations I experienced the following;

     

    Long camping trip, 1200KM+ (750+ miles)

     

    14 Limited with factory tow pack handles this with no issues.

    15 SEL with just a Class III hitch had 2 temporary AWD failure notices on the dash.

    16 Escape SE just plain suffered and had next to no "get-up-and-go" on the on ramps and forget about passing safely. (plus, the Escape is about 700lbs lighter than the Edge which you'd think might help) It's got a highly over-rated towing capability. The 2.0L EB should be rated at 2000lbs Max.

  5. Maybe Ford detuned the 2nd gen 3.5L Edge to make the 2.0L Edge more desirable? It's pushing adoption of the eco boost engines. Otherwise why would the 2nd gen be less lively? I know what you mean though. My Edge is slow to pull away from stop signs and the steering feels slow. We kept our 2002 Ford Windstar as a work vehicle. It has the same weight but a 3.8L V6 and hydraulic steering. It is just more pleasing to drive. That is sad when your 16 year old minivan has a better drive. It's quicker from a stop and on turns. Why downgrade the customers experience? I know, all in the name of mpg. But my Windstar gets 17/24 and my Edge gets 17/26. A whole 2 miles more on the highway which is 20% of my driving. Sigh. My Edge is not a rust bucket like the Windstar and it has the new tech which I love. My Windstar has 190,000 miles. Waiting to see if the eco boost engines can put up those kind of miles. Everything has pluses and minuses. But please Ford remember the customer's driving experience.

    At this point for longevity-sake I'd rather have a naturally aspirated V6. Especially when towing.

  6. Congratulations. What an adventure. Hope you enjoy your ride for many years to come. Regarding the grabby brakes on the 15, there is a TSB to fix the issue.

    Had it done, it was OK for a while but returned, not as badly though. Not sure why as previous gen brakes are great.

  7. I thought the 2.0 was rated to tow 2000#. Now I need to add a hitch as a back up for towing the boat to the lake. Less than 3k with the trailer and it is only 5 miles to the launch. I agree the 2.0 is probably not the best choice for long haul or very long hills on the highway, but it is nice that it is rated to 3500 for the occasional boat or small camper tow.

    The 2.0L is only rated at 3500lbs if you have the Factory Tow package.

     

    Remember, you have to account for all added weight to your Edge. Boat, trailer, people in the Edge, gear, even that tank of gas. Add all that up. 2000lbs is the Max. Realistically, 1600lbs total to add a safety margin.

  8. I've had quite an experience/lesson. In the past 4 years I've gone from a 14 Limited to a 16 Escape (yes.) then a 15 SEL and now back to a 14 Limited.


    Our search began for a vehicle that could tow a decent sized tent-trailer 2-3 times a year.


    The 1st 14 Limited was purchased with 206KM (129 miles) in Tri-Pearl White. It had everything but a BAMR and adaptive CC/CD. Right from the start we liked it. More features than I've ever had in a vehicle. Everything was fine for 10 months, then...



    Something made me think I'd save more gas most of the year if I went to an Escape. Why not? Ford says the 16 SE with 2.0L EB can tow as much as the Edge (both having Factory tow packs). Sounded good to me. So I traded and camped twice with it. It's suffered (as did I on the mistake). Personally i think the 2.0L EB is over-rated. Only had it 3 months. Luckily I have an exceptional dealership who took the 16 back without much of a hit to the wallet.


    - As a side note; the 16 Escape SE 2.0L EB only got 1L per 100KM better than the Edge while towing, maybe 2L per 100KM in the city. Also, it's a good 700lbs lighter than the Edge.



    Because my previous 14 was gone, plus the budget I put myself in, the only choice was a 15 SEL and to add a 3rd party tow hitch. We camped a few times locally and distant 1200KM+ (750+ mile) drives. Locally, no issues. Distant, well, we had an AWD temporary shutdown msg on the dash, twice). I literally dreamed of getting a 1.5 gen and at the same time thought I'd blew my chance as a 14 now would have at least 80,000KM (50,000 miles) on average. The used Edge ads I saw reflected this and I didn't want to buy something with that much. I basically put the idea of owning another 1.5 gen, specifically a 13-14 model year out of my mind.


    Besides the above, my personal findings between the 2 Edge generations are:


    Steering: not a fan for the electric steering in the 2nd gens, just has a dead feel.


    Spongy ride: the 1.5 gens have a stiffer & better road feel.


    Shifting and/or engine tuning: the 1.5 gen 3.5L is more lively than the 2nd gen 3.5L. I'd say "normal'' Drive mode in a 1.5 gen is at least half-way between a 2nd gens Drive and Sport mode.


    Brakes: the 2nd gens are grabby when cold, nothing you can do about it and it drove me nuts in traffic.


    Body style and interior layout: while personal taste comes into play here, at least the 1.5 gens had an original style, no other SUV remotely looked like it.



    Service time for the 15, I phoned on a Friday to make an appointment. For the fun of it, went to the dealerships website and checked the used Edges they had in. Whaaaat?! Had to do a double take. 14 Limited, 301A with Factory tow pack, BAMR and adaptive CC/CD and only 24,980KMs (about 15,000 miles). If the numbers work and more importantly, the better-half agrees, that Edge is mine. Went in on the Monday, looked at it, test drove it, traded the 15 and drove the 14 home.


    I can safely say, I'm done and I'll keep this until the wheels fall off!

    Thanks! Originally I had a 14 Limited exactly like this minus the BAMR and Adaptive CC/CD in Tri-Pearl White. Then a long story started, eventually got into a 15 SEL which really didn't drive the same or impress me. Saw this 14 and grabbed it.
