  1. I have a 2009 Ford Edge Limited AWD with 212,xxx miles. I bought it new and have meticulously maintained it. Other than the PTU going south around 150,000, it has basically been flawless (other than what I consider to be 'wear and tear' items).

It still has the original water pump which is currently (knock on wood) working fine. Should I consider replacing it even though it's working fine? My Ford dealership tells me not to worry about it...that they do not see many go bad, but 212,xxx is a lot of miles on a water pump.

    Plz advise. Thx.

BTW - I'm not a fan of this 'internal water pump' engine design. It appears that serious engine damage can occur if/when the seal goes. Other than this, I have no complaints on the 3.5.

  2. That looks really sharp!

Question: When I looked into this product in the Weathertech catalogue (came in the box when I bought the laser-fit trunk liner for both vehicles - awesome products!), it said in the description that no drilling was necessary as it used the factory holes. In the instructions, however, it said to use self-tapping screws to pierce the underside of the hood assembly. Which is it? Do you need to make new holes or no? How hard was it to install?

    Hi PW...

I read the same thing, and I interpreted the instructions to mean you didn't have to use the screws; you could only use the two sided tape to hold the bug shield in place. (I didn't like that idea). I may have read the instructions wrong...it's been a while.

In any event, drilling the pilot holes for the screws was not a big deal...very easy to do. I'd offer to use a 'punch' (if I'm referring to it correctly) to mark the spot to drill...this will also keep the drill bit from 'walking'. Be sure to use a drill bit which is somewhat smaller than the screw...you can always make the hole bigger, but can't make it smaller. I'd also offer to put a stop on the drill bit to make certain the bit doesn't go too far in...to deep...when drilling. I used a piece of old hose I had laying around...I cut it to a length that when placed over the drill bit, it only allowed for a small portion of the bit (1/4 inch or so) to be exposed.

Hope this makes sense... Good luck.

  3. Well, after 2.5 days, the dealership now think it's the cylinder heads but still no ETA on a fix (First the transmission, now this? Seems strange that they would both give the same fault codes). It's unfortunate but the dealership has been very elusive and unhelpful on this issue. This is the worst dealership experience I've ever had - no one follows up with us or calls to let us know what the status of our vehicle is and no one seems to care that this vehicle is not even two weeks old and already had a serious engine failure. The only reason we have any feedback at all is because we call them every day and not vice versa.

At this point I have my doubts as to the dealership's ability to diagnose and fix the vehicle properly or maybe its simply a case that this is not a priority for them. Will visit the dealership tomorrow and ask for an explanation and ask to see the diagnosis report and the engine fault codes. Hopefully the next follow-up will have something more positive to report.

BTW, If anyone has had a good experience with a Ford dealership in the area north of Toronto (York region), I'd appreciate the recommendations in case things don't work out with this dealership. Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear about this...if you only had the car 2 weeks or so, I'd check w/ Ford about getting a different one (especially if it will need major engine work). You may be plesantly suprised w/ their response...I've heard a story where a tranny went out of an Expedition the first week of ownership, and without any prompting, the selling dealer offered to replace the vehicle.

    Best of luck w/ this....

  4. You'll find many are quite passionate about what they choose/which brands they'er loyal to. I agree w/ what someone else said...use what works for you. I've tried many, and must admit, I'm partial to the Meguiars NXT 2.0...here's what I do:

    - wash (kind a goes w/o saying I suppose)

    - claybar (this can be time consuming, but makes a huge difference)

    - polish (Meguiars...this is an added step, but after clay bar...does not take much time...I use the Porter-Cable random orbital polisher...almost makes waxing/polishing fun)

    - Meguiars NXT 2.0. (I use the liquid...again, apply and remove w/ Porter-Cable random orbital polisher)

    - Meguiars Ultimate Detailer (I think that's what it is called...spray on...wipe off).

    Here are the results:

Now, can you get these results or better w/ another brand...maybe... I think you can get great results with just about any of the high end waxes. Personally, I think the cleaning/prep...and more specifically, using the clay bar to remove dirt washing misses, is what makes the difference.

    whatever you choose...Good luck...

  5. if u get the 20" rims make sure they get all the sticky stuff off.

I too had the 'sticky stuff' on the 20" Chrome clad wheels; I noticed this after I took the car home, and started to detail it (clay bar, meguiars polish, then meguiars nxt 2.0 tech wax...). The sticky stuff did not come off w/ soap and water. I then tried wetting a rag w/ acetone and rubbing on the wheel, and it came right instantly. As the wheels are 'chrome clad' (english translation...'chrome colored/treated plastic'), I was not concernd that the acetone would hurt the wheels....and it didn't appear to.

Other than that, no other issues/concerns when I picked the car up....all was well.

  6. I pre fill my oil filters also except for ones that are installed horizontally, but I can get some oil in it and quickly install it hoping not to lose too much oil. the link is a oil change procedure, bottom of step #5 touches on filling the filter before installing. The video says to change the oil when the car has cooled down, I don't I change it when its hot, drains faster and more complete, I use very thick rubber gloves so as not to get burned.

    http://www.wikihow.com/Change-the-Oil-in-Your-Car

Regarding the prefill of the oil filter when changing, yes...same here...I try not to fill it too much when it doesn't sit totally vertical. In the Edge (2009, FL500 S filter), it doesn't sit 100% vertical, but not too far off. I fill the filter w/ oil...let it sit. every 2-3 minutes there after, fill it to just under the threaded part of the filter (the part which attaches to the filter to the engine). When the oil level in the filter stops dropping (meaning the filter media is saturated w/ oil), I stop and install the filter. Doing it this way, I feel I get as much oil in the filter as I can without spilling it (yes, I do install the filter as quickly as I can to loose/spill as little oil as possible...more often than not, none).

This is one of the reasons why I like to change the oil on my own; I know good and well the service techs do not do this, and I am a believer it's better for the engine.

    Again, just my thoughts.

    Good luck.

  7. I always clean the surface where the gasket mates and coat the new gasket with fresh oil before install.....thanks for the repies. I did inspect above the area where the filter goes and all is clean and dry. It is definitely coming from the filter gasket area.

I've noticed the same thing...a drop or two on the filter when I change it..as if it was dripping just ever-so slowly. This has not always happened...just every so often. I have not noticed any drop in oil level per the dipstick when there are a couple of drips on the filter.

It just about has to come from the oil filter's gasket. why??? don't know.. I to always clean the 'oil filter mounting surface', as well as coat the oil filter gasket w/ oil. I'm probably not helping, but in my opinion...if it's just a drop or 2 every so often, and there's no noticable level difference per the dip stick, I'd probably let it go; this one can drive you nuts trying to track down.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

    Good luck.

  8. If Ford does use a special break in oil or additive or a synthetic blend they should say so. Whats the secret?

But you brought up good points for discussion?

I do not believe Ford use a 'special' break-in oil...just plain ol' 5W20. As for the interval, to each his own. Yes, I probably do go a bit overboard (admittedly), but in my way of thinking...just cheap insurance.

On a related note...I do pre-fill the oil filter before installing it. I've never seen anybody at a dealership do this, and do think it is important; oil gets to the engine/moving parts quicker as the filter already has oil in it...

    Good luck...

  9. My salesman said for the first time oil change it might be 3000 miles if I really want to, no less than 3000 miles otherwise might just waste money. But he also said do the first oil change at 5000 miles should be just fine.

I may be a bit weird, but I did the first oil change on the Edge with approx. 100 miles on it (I've done this with all my new cars)..my concern is that they may have been some stuff in the oil (metal shavings/dirt from assembly...) when the engine was built, and really didn't want to rely on the filter to capture it. I know, this is a bit extreme...but for the few bucks to do the oil change (and changing the oil on the Edge is ever-so easy once you get the correct frigg'n filter), I think it's cheap insurance.

As for the oil change interval, I personally think 3 months/3000 miles is a good limit...again, cheap insurance, and easy to do (As you may guess, mine may be done a bit more often).

OK...ready to hear from the 'why would you change the oil after 100 miles while Ford does not recommend it...it's a waste of money to change it so often' crowd. :shades:

  10. You can retain all SYNC functionality with an aftermarket HU, you just have to add on another piece of hardware. A factory navigation unit can be found for a lower price on ebay or other parts dealers than through Ford directly, but honestly for the money it would be better to go aftermarket. You will get more options and better sound quality that way...

What he said.... I agree. the Ford unit is not bad, but for the $$$ (a $1995.00 msrp option if I remember correctly), you could get an awesome aftermarket unit that looks like it came from the factory, and works much better/more features/sounds better. Just my 2 cents worth. Checkout Crutchfield.com... If you're a do-it-youselfer, I think you'll be pleasantly surpised. Good luck.

  11. Just bought a 2010 MKX three days ago & am experiencing upper back pain, also. I'm only 5'4" & have leather seats, but can't seem to get the driver's side seat adjusted to a point where I don't have upper back pain after getting out of the vehicle. I called the dealership owner Mon. after purchasing at the end of day Saturday to see if he would have mercy & stop the registration from being transferred. He very rudely informed me it had already been transferred & merely suggested I "just set it like the passenger seat, they both have the same settings available". No...really? What alternative does anyone have when they realize they've made a HUGE mistake & can't drive their new car without being in pain afterward?

I've previously read many negative comments regarding the Edge seats/headrests. Until about 1 month or so ago, I truly had no complaints w/ seats; I thought they were fine (actually comfortable), and didn't understand why so many people had issue w/ the seats. My wife thinks they're fine...she's also short (5' nothing..or there abouts). Then again, this is my wife's car, and I typically don't drive it. (Her Edge is a 2009 Limited AWD, leather seats. if that matters).

Approx. a month or so ago, I did take the Edge on a 3+ hour trip (one way). I now better understand atleast some of the concerns voiced about the seats; it does seem as if the headrest is tilted a bit too far forward, and I did experience some head/neck discomfort (I may be understating it a bit). I did figure out if I reclined the seat just a bit, the headrest became less of an issue/seat became more comfortable.

To those having discomfort w/ the headrests, you may try reclining the seat just a bit...I found it to help.

On a separate note, the bottom (or 'seat' part) of the seat (probably not describing it very well) seems to be a bit short for my legs (I'm about 6'0"); my thighs are do not seem to be fully supported but again, my wife has no complaints. I sometimes think this car may have been designed more for women than men (short seats, headrest positioning, no supercharger :shades: ,...)

    Good luck.

  12. I used mine through this past Chicago winter and never had an issue with salt or snow getting on the carpets.

    BTW, im 6'2"

I thought about getting the Weathteck mats for my wife's Edge. but haven't yet... I am suprised the 'dead pedal' is not covered by the mat... Have you given this feedback to Weathertech? I've purchased their Bugsheilds (3 of them) and couldn't be happier. When I spoke w/ their customer service folks, they did seem interested in making sure I was happy..

    Good luck...

  13. Has anybody installed a hood bug-stone deflector? If so do you get any wind noise from it or any other issues with it.

    http://www.weathertech.ca/store/mvproduct.aspx?ItemGroupId=5

    Thanks

Yes...I've installed the Weatherteck deflector on my wife' 2009 Edge, as well as my daughters 2010 Escape. Of all the deflector's I've installed thus far (5 or so), the Weathertech are the highest quality in my opinion...they fit perfectly...easy to center (have a notch/mark on the underside which matches a notch/mark on the hood) and are more pliable than the others (which to me, translates into lasting longer). Here are some pics:

    Good luck...

  14. My 08 SEL is in for its 5th repair. I am going to replace the car one way or another at this point(i'll leave that for another post). I don't know if I should take the chance with a 2010 Edge? Other than this PTU leak wifey and I love the car, its handling, style. I see some threads starting up on PTU seal leaks for 2010's. If anyone with a good insight on this can help I'd appreciate it. Also does anyone know if the 2011s use the same AWD system? I understand Flexs and Taurus uses it. It will be pretty foolish of Ford not the correct this.

My wife has a 2009 limited AWD. It now has approx. 25,000 and no PTU leak (actually, no leaks at all). After reading all I have on this forum about the PTU seal leak problem, I'm a little concern, and check it every so often.

So to answer your question, I don't know..maybe it was fixed for the 2009's and on? If it means anything, her Edge is a later 2009 build (takes the FL500S oil fiter rather than the FL400).

Good luck...and by the way, so far, very happy w/ the Edge.

  15. stuff like this is why I never go to the dealer IF there is a chance I can fix it myself.. not that you could have, just saying that going in for something means you can come out with something else.

one of the beauties of this forum is finding self help so you can avoid the dealer :)

I couldn't agree more. On rare occassions, I'll get my car back from service with other issues...(ie: I took my F250 in for a tranny fluid flush/replace, and the car would not go into drive when I picked it up; they somehow re-adjusted the shift linkage so the gears were 'one off'....'D' was neutral). You know the mechanic knew this the second he drove it out of the service bay, but didn't bother to fix until I picked it up. Same visit, I also had the power steering fluid flushed, and later checked the level, only to find there was no level; the tech did not put enough fluid back in (you would think checking the level after changing the fluid is a given...wouldn't you???) I didn't get a tech on the 'A-team' working on my truck this visit.

Now as wierd as this may sound, I'm pleased w/ my Ford dealer in the sense that they always treat me right, immediately fix what they screw up, never argue when they screw-up, give me loaners,...I just hate that things get screwed up in the first place. I know 'stuff' sometimes happens, but when its obvious and not fixed...well, let's just hope the tech/mechanic a good talking to from his boss.

The sad thing is that this reflects badly on Ford, or for Ford product, when in reality, is caused not by Ford, but rather the id@#t that did the repair. Kind of makes you wonder if anyone at the dealership oversees the work done by the techs/mechanics? You know, it wouldn't take much for one person to do 'Quality Control' after a repair is done, just to make sure all is well (ie: the transmission engages when placed in 'D', trim pieces are re-installed properly, ...).

Good luck, and hopefully, the dealership will make it right without giving you any problems. I'm not sure if you know the owner of the dealership, but it may not be a bad idea to get with him/her and let them know what's going on. Unless the owner of the dealership is a total more-off, they will make certain all is fixed to your satisfaction; if not for happy customers, they would not be in business, and especially in the current economic envrionment, keeping customers happy is what it's all about.

Good luck, and hope all turns out well.

  16. I have the aforementioned wheels and tires I am thinking of selling. They have 1800 miles on them and are in like new condition. I will post pics if there is enough interest.

The minimum I would accept is $2800 plus shipping for the set.

I love the look, but I would like to have a bit more tire on the car and I'm looking at going to 20's.

Please let me know if you are interested.

    Thanks,

    Eric

    Hey Eric.

I've got 20" the Ford wheels (Chrome clad aluminum) from a 2009 Edge Limited...pristine condition...w/ the Pirelli Scorpion (sp?) tires....may be interested in trading... Let me know.

    Thx,

    Howard

  17. My 08 has 10k miles and possibly two seals leaking. Dealer said three weeks to get parts. mad.gif

My wife has the 2009 AWD Ford Edge, and luv's the thing. Other than a driver's door alignment issue (fixed immediately), we've had aboslutely not problems w/ the car. It now has approx. 15,000 miles...no leaks yet.... After reading this, I'll be watching closely.

From reading the previous posts regarding the PTU seal, I was under the impression the PTU seal issue was only on the older Edges...I guess that's not true??? Hopefully, the dealer will fix it with the upgraded seal, and you'll have no more problems.

    Good Luck...

  18. I have the Ford one too and gave up after one set of holes. banghead.gif

I installed the WeatherTech bug shield on my wife's '09 Edge. The WeatherTech bug shield made very well (very well), and fitment/installation was ever-so easy; there is a notch on the 'underside' part of the shield which lines up w/ a notch/mark on the underside of the hood. Lining the two up centers the bug shield perfectly. I also installed one of these on my daughter's Edge...same installation/same result. Whenever I need to purchase more bug shields, I'll definitely purchase WeatherTech. Here are some pics:

For some reason, I can't attach the pics...but here's a link which contains some bug shield pics:

  19. Has anyone noticed a distortion about 6in. up from dash. If you at the center line in the road you notice it bends toward the right.

Yep...my wife's 2009 Edge has the exact same problem (I tend to notice it when I'm looking forward, low to the left..). Hasn't bothered me enough to take back to the dealer, though...I don't see it all the time. Please keep us posted if you do take it to Ford for repair (windsheild replacement???). Thx,

  20. Hey there,

So I'm one week into owning my Edge and had some observations and questions. I gotta say I love the car so far, and I'm very happy with it, even though I'm having some things serviced this friday. I've got a few questions:

    1) Can I put in the stock nav unit that works with Sync into my Edge? Has anyone done so, and if so, can you DIY it?

    2) I noticed some shuddering when turning the car at low speeds, like say when backing out of a parking lot? Is this normal?

    3) I also noticed that power to the power connections seems to stay on even when the car is off. I plug in a portable GPS and it stays on when I leave the car. I'd prefer it'd turn off automatically, so is there a way to change this? If not, is it likely I could drain my battery by having things plugged in (phone, iPod, GPS)?

    Hi Osiris.

I have an '09 AWD Edge...I'm not sure if this problem exists w/ all Edges, or maybe just the AWDs. Yes, mine has this too...kind-a subtle...just at very low speeds as if I'm backing out of the garage or parking spot while turning the wheel... It's not been enough to cause me concern though... Has anyone else had this problem?

  21. I have the exact same problem and thought i was just too picky. Im going to drop off the Edge and see what they can do now.

Same problem here, but only w/ the Driver's door. Dropped it off w/ the dealer...fixed within the day. Can't tell there was ever a problem.

Good Luck, hope they fix yours as well as they did my wife's.

  22. Hi Rich. :D I agree.

It would seem to me that the best proactive step would be to have the system flushed and filled with the "revised coolant" mentioned in the letter.

While a pre-problem flush and fill does not seem to be covered under the terms of the extended Warranty, it never hurts to ask the Dealer if it can be Warranty covered. If they say yes, great.

If they say no, then paying for the flush and revised coolant refill out-of-pocket would seem to be a small price to pay for a little added peace of mind.

As you stated, you are skeptical of the 5 year/100,000 mile coolant flush interval anyway. And you are probably at least two years into ownership on top of that.

    Keep us updated.

    Good luck. :beerchug:

PS - I have a feeling the reason Ford has decided to address this problem on an as-needed basis is because only a small percentage of heater cores are defective (as akirby mentioned earlier). Therefore, it is more cost effective to address the situation by extending the Warranty and flushing/fixing on an as-needed basis, as opposed to calling everyone back in to flush and fill (since most vehicle heater cores are not defective and will not have the problem anyway). Just an educated guess.

Also, to save any outraged replies. I completely understand that this causes anguish and aggravation for some owners so I am not defending the decision made by Ford. I am only taking an educated guess and explaining the "business" end of it.

Personally, I like that Ford is not trying to sweep the 'heater core' problem under the rug...in my mind, this shows Ford is committed to customer satisfaction, and I'd even say quality. Don't get me wrong, I (my wife) has an '09 Edge, and I won't be happy if the heater core goes south pre-maturely. But you know, stuff happens...be it a Ford, Toyota, Honda,...whatever. (Side note: Just about every 2 year old or so Toyota Camry I see seems to have an exhaust system ready to drop when the car hits the road bump. I've not heard Toyota saying they're having exhaust issues, or will be extending a warranty to replace is there is a problem.)

Ford is doing the right thing; being up-front saying that yes, a few bad heater cores may have been installed in certain model year Edges, and that if you happen to have one, Ford will cover it. Again, this is not to say I'd be a happy camper if my wife's Edge needs it's heater core replaced, but what more can you ask of, or expect from a company trying to doing the right thing?

    Just my thoughts.

  23. IMHO....I think there is a consensus here that the head rests are cantered forward. I don't think anybody is questioning this. Having said this, those of you who'd head does NOT touch the headrest have obviously reclined their seats back far enough to HAVE to hold your head up or you'll be looking out your vista roof should you rest your head. I'm about average size at 5'10" 180lbs and personally felt the same "headrest forward" problem but it's gone away by reclining the seat just enough and adjusting the height of the headrest to find my "comfy spot". Unlike most of you, I like having my head rested while I drive.

I'm just shy of 6', weight approx 195, and think the headrests are fine. Personally, I think the seats overall are comfortable, but the 'seat' part (flat part where you sit) seems to be a bit short...could use another couple of inches to truly be comfortable...at times, I feel like I'm sitting on a 'swing set' seat. Then again, this is my wife's car, and she likes the seats/headrests as they are...she's shorter than me, and thinks the length of the seats, as well as the headrests, are fine. (I drive the Edge maybe once a month or so...not much more than that).
