  1. Thanks! What year did she have? It's funny because when people see that I have an Escape Hybrid, and ask my MPG, they expect some crazy number, but in truth, it's been going downhill, this current winter in the midwest, which is only started to get to it's rough season today, has been averaging 20-23 mpg according to the computer, and when it hits single digits it's usually down to 18 mpg or so, and I'm not heavy footed either, I use to get about 30-33 mpgs fairly easily. So while I expect a huge drop, I can't see it being all that huge for me, but that's just my opinion, maybe I'll be in for a shocker if I decide to go with the edge.

She had an 05 Escape Hybrid and for the 05-08(?) model years the interior was "basic" (the nice term) although some may call it "cheap" (maybe more accurate) -- I think it was the 09 or so model year where they upgraded the interior a bit? But I don't know, didn't keep up much with them. When she would drive it around town she would average 25 MPG, when I drove it I would average 29MPG but I always tried to drive as smoothly as possible. And you're right, when the temp goes way down so does the MPG!

  2. Have you seen the new Escape?

That's true, I think the Escape got a re-design in the past couple years. My wife had an Escape Hybrid and now has an Edge, she likes the Edge better but her MPG has been cut in half, so be prepared for that if you make the switch -- I agree with Mr Kirby, maybe you should take a look at the latest Escape Hybrid and see what you think?

    Good luck!

  3. OK that is what I figured. like I said earlier paying 2 more payments won't mean much to me and it would be useful to keep a good relationship with the dealer since they are close to my office. I just wanted to make sure if I paid in 5 months that I wouldn't loss the 1k and be paying interest.

We bought my wife's Edge in NJ, got the extra $1k for their financing... a couple days later I started the process with my credit union to refinance, ended up making one payment to Ford Credit, refinance paid off the rest, there was no restriction or penalty.

  4. I was not suggesting that you shouldn't buy the vehicle. I was merely pointing out tricks the dealer was using so you don't get tricked into paying more than you thought you were paying.

I agree -- I have looked into these before when shopping around, come to find out that in many cases they throw in things like $500 for recent college graduate buyer, $500 military member buyer, etc to advertise the highest rebate amount. Most people do not qualify for those, even fewer would qualify for both of these, however they do a good job of getting you in the door and once you are in the door you get new car fever a little bit more and don't care as much about the final cost since you really really want to drive home the new car.

Sorry you felt accosted by the doubting Thomases, so many of us have just seen it/done that many times before. I'm interested to find out what kind of deal you end up with, please let us know!

  5. Since my I pod is a old one (my Wife's) I'm thinking of getting my own, Does anyone use an I pod in their ford which sync's up, with no problem using a USB cable ? and what I pod are you using, (Classic, Nano, or Touch) ??? appreciate all help i can get

My wife has a 2010 Edge and we each have an iPod Nano 5th Gen, either one works fine with normal USB cable and sync.

  6. Go by the manual - or do it a little sooner at 7500. There is no way it should be changed at 3000.

I used to be stuck in the mindset of every 3,000 from following that pattern for 20 years... however I've lightened up a bit and now go every 5,000. Too stuck in my old ways to let it go for 7,500 and 5,000 is both a compromise and very easy to track when looking at the odometer.

  7. I haven't updated my Sync as yet...I have a few questions about it. Is it really necessary? Can I use a USB flash drive that has other data already on it and still be able to update Sync without erasing previously loaded data? How much memory do the updates use? Any other comments/tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

The data that goes onto the USB from PC to vehicle and then back again appears pretty small as far as USBs go, I think they are normally about 6MB downloading to PC and then less than 100k (maybe far less, I don't remember exactly) to upload the confirmation files.

The only issue I've ever had was getting my USB drive to work the first time, which required me to reformat it to FAT32 and try again and then all went well.

I don't believe there will be any issues having existing files on the drive but always have those USB files backed up just in case.

  8. My dealership tried some similar tactics with me when i traded off my 07 Sport Trac and 07 Edge on my 2010 Sport Trac Adrenalin. They tried to charge me $1800 for some off brand extended warranty, which i declined. Then they tried to sell me an $899 protection package for one year of car washes and fabric protector. I turned it down also, since my truck had leather interior. After i took delivery, i went to the internet and searched for Ford ESP prptection. i submitted an inquiry to FD-Warranty.com, which is Ford of Greenfield, MA. They quoted me a 7 year/100,000 mile Ford ESP PremiunCARE plan with a $100 deductible price of $1089. i took that printout back to my dealership and asked them to match it, which they did.

I bought 2 extended warranties from myfordwarranty.com which is a Ford & Honda dealer in Rhode Island, it is a Ford Warranty and I saved $600 (on each car) from what my local dealer wanted (ordered online and got the confirmation papers in the mail about 7 days later). I believe these add-ons are where local dealers make a lot of profit because the purchaser is enamored with their new car and most consider all that paperwork mumbo-jumbo such a hassle and just sign so they can drive away with their new car -- but then if they look more closely they see that they've been more generous to their dealer than they thought.

  9. We noticed during the test drive the driver side airbag cover (on the steering wheel) was a bit cockeyed and there was a noticeable gap on one side of the gap.

See the linked article below, which states that over 50,000 airbags are stolen from cars each year, and that one may not know if until they get into a crash and there is no airbag in place to deploy. Who knows if this has anything to do with the car you looked at, but when you noted the cockeyed airbag cover that's the first thing I thought about.

  10. However, there was no copy of the original window sticker, that listed what equipment was included in this particular vehicle.

Here is the URL to get the window sticker for new inventory, no idea if it would work for a VIN that is a few years old but it's worth a try, right? Replace the last part with your VIN and see how it goes.... good luck.

  11. Do the cabin air filters have activated charcoal? thanks Marty

No, they are just white plastic frame with white paper-type filter element. Appears to cost about $1 to make but sells for about $10-20 or whatever the OP's Amazon link shows, not much to the filters actually.

  12. ok so the problem is that when i connect my "old" ipod nano to my 2010 edge it charges but doesn't play, and when i use that voice commander and say "USB" the voice commander or whatever it's called it says that there's no usb device connected.

    so any help?

You may also want to reboot your iPod and then try again, I've found the Nanos to be more finicky than the old clunky but trusty iPod Mini that I used to have.

Hold center button and "menu" at the same time for about 3-5 seconds, screen will go blank and then the apple icon will show, let go of buttons and it will take about 5-10 seconds or so to come back to main screen -- then try to connect to USB and Sync and see how it goes.

  13. What is wrong with Ford technology? They cant even use longlasting brake-pads on a heavy car like the Edge?

I was recently reading Edmunds.com and other sites about the changes that were made for the 2011 Edge, and if I remember correctly they designed larger brake rotors on this model since the past few years' models (such as yours) experienced a lot of complaints about brakes wearing out too quickly. So I guess when engineers design these things they may calculate that brakes of size X would be sufficient to stop that much weight and last an estimated amount of miles, but maybe real life experiences prove otherwise and they have to make changes in subsequent years. So it's something that we are definitely keeping watch over on our 2010 Edge.

  14. Last July when I got my 09 Edge I paid 1454.00 for the 7 year 100,00o mile ESP, remember it's negotiable at the dealer.

My wife and I just bought a 2010 Edge AWD (I think the AWD rate may be higher), dealer wanted $1,290 for 4yr/75lk coverage, I got a 7yr/100k ESP online for $1,210 with $100 deductible, used the same dealer that I used when I bought my FFH last year. www.myfordwarranty com is a dealer in Rhode Island and the written confirmation will arrive in the mail in about 7-10 days (email confirmation same day that order was placed).

  15. I saw 4 different models being built on the same assembly line, in no particular order. They had a Flex followed by 2 Edge's, then a MKT and finally a MKX. They would then throw in a new 2011 Edge or MKX just to make sure everyone was awake...LOL.

OK it's official, I'm living in the past! :D

    Thanks for the info.

  16. Wow, doesn't get more informed than having someone walk up and down the assembly line! :)

I guess I don't understand the build process, I thought the "retooling" downtime that occurs each summer was to convert the assembly equipment to make the next year's model, if model years can be made as noted above, what is "retooling" for?

  17. Good luck, would be interested in knowing how many miles are actully on it when you get it. I'll let you know mine as well.

Well I can't speak for this particular situation, but my Dad has been driving new cars from one dealer to another since he retired 10 years ago. The selling dealer searches in their system to find just the vehicle that the customer is looking for, and then contacts that dealer to "swap" vehicles -- so if a customer wants a 2010 Edge and a dealer 150 miles away has one, the selling dealer makes the call and offers to swap whatever type of car the supplying dealer needs, and they probably haggle over that. So if the one dealer is giving up a 2010 Edge, maybe he's short on the 2011 Mustang and the selling dealer has plenty in stock, so they cut their deal and now dealer #1 will make a sale and dealer #2 will improve the selection on his lot. Once this is done, ol' Dad drives a new Mustang one way and drives the Edge back the other way. Some might not prefer this as they want a "new" car to be "new" when they drive it off the lot, but the cars are treated well during the drive and the only change is 150 miles on the odometer.

So if the OP really wants this particular vehicle, you can do your homework and check the online inventories of area dealerships (or maybe call Ford customer care and ask them to locate the model with the options you want), and then deal directly with that other dealer and have someone run you up there. Good luck!

  18. Three new engines choices and all new electronics give me reason to shy away. Not to say everyone will have issues but the odds are certainly greater in the first model year.

I used to think the same way, which is why I held off on the 2005 Escape Hybrid and bought a 2006 model, figured I didn't want to be their guinea pig and experience quirks. Now almost 5 years and 60,000 miles later, zero problems with the 2006 Escape Hybrid, and haven't read anything about glitches that were uncovered on the "first year" 2005 model.

So that gave me more confidence to go with the "first year" 2010 Fusion Hybrid, and after 11 months and 34,000 miles I have had zero problems.

I don't have any reservations about the 2011 Edge model, especially since this is really a midlife upgrade rather that a new model. So I will be ordering one in the next couple months, once I can actually test drive a 2011 model rather than a 2010, I want to check out the MyFord Touch first to make sure I like it.

  19. Neutral safety switch??Try moving shift lever, good luck Marty

+1 on that, make sure it's in Park and if so move down the Neutral and try to crank, if no joy go back to Park and try again and wiggle the shift selector... I think those switches are made better now than in years past but you never know.

Let us know how it goes.

  20. What about the all new MyFordTouch dash?

Hello akirby, looks like I'm following you from the Fusion forum -- now getting into the market for a 2011 Edge and waiting for the MyFordTouch, waiting for a 2011 to arrive on a local lot to take a test drive and check it, then order the combo we want.

So I'm also interested in the dates for the ordering guide to become available.

    Jeff
