  1. Yes, in absolute terms, I made a really bad choice with the Edge, but it was still the best choice of available options. We wanted a Ford for product reliability and local dealer ability to service. Dealer service in our town is either Ford or General Motors (no foreign car dealerships or Chrysler with service department) and we absolutely will not own a GM product -- local dealer service ruined my wife's Bonneville and tried to claim it was our fault. Won't go back. Based on the feature's the wife wanted in the car, the Edge came closest -- had everything she wanted and nothing she didn't want. I would have preferred the 2008 Taurus X that was sitting next to the 2010 Edge in the Ford used car lot, but the wife didn't like it. VERY IMPORTANT FACTOR! We did test drive it but we test drove the used 2010 Limited after we had test driven the new 2011 SEL. The 2010 interior was so much more comfortable and the instrument panel and controls so much better than the 2011 version, that we were more impressed with the acceptable 2010 in comparison to the really bad 2011 than we would have been evaluating the 2010 "stand-alone" compared to an absolute standard.

Trading it in is not an option -- not financially feasible and the wife likes it. And it is very good for trips (just took it to Florida and back this weekend). But for day-to-day commuting or in and around town driving (unless you are hauling kids to school and after-school) this is not a good choice of a vehicle. If I could afford to, I would keep it parked in the garage for trips or the occasional haul something pick from the store and get myself a older model used Mustang coupe with manual transmission for my personal car. But finances don't allow, so I'll just learn to live with the Edge.

Not to be a smart ass, but it seems like the car was more for her & not you. Not everyone has the same tastes - I like my Edge & the wife likes her Baja & we each complain about the others car.

  2. Actually the pic might not do it justice, the part visible from the inside held together yes but if you look from the outside a good 2 inches along the back most edge came apart and flew off the back of the car, as well as in each of the corners a few square inches flew off. Not exactly like what I've seen from windshields - it definitely didn't hold together like you would think the roof over your head should. And NOTHING actually hit it - there was zero impact.

Only the windshield glass is safety - 2 pieces of glass with plastic sandwiched between. All others are tempered, which in theory, you can hit straight on with a hammer & it will not break. Hit the edge of the glass just slightly & you have a million pieces of broken glass.

I believe your glass was not installed correctly. The body may have been in contact with an edge of the glass & body flex may have caused the implosion. Many times the edges of the glass remain in place after the break. If that is the case. the glass company may be able to tell if it was not installed correctly.

  3. By chance, does anyone have any pictures of either the Husky or WeatherTech mats in their car (preferably a 2011 Edge)? I am curious to know which brand actually fits and covers the area better. I am under the perception that the Husky mats cover and fit better (but I'm not so crazy over the design), than the WeatherTechs. I have read that the WeatherTech's mats fall a bit shy for the driver's area, particularly the area under the parking brake/dead pedal, but they do have the hole to attach it to the floor. I am interested in buying a set for the front and second row seats as well as the cargo area.

If you look on the earlier post on the thread, someone has posted some pics. I have the weathertech's in my 2011 Sport in the front, second row & cargo & coverage is good - nothing has gotten on the carpet. The only problem is the mounting tabs on the LT floormat - at the time, the Weathertech only had one mounting hole & the 2011's have two. Not sure if that has changed yet.

  4. I have heard of people having problems with the vista roof which is why I stayed away from all options exc. nav on my 11 Sport. With that many issues than can be seen with plain eye & being able to replicate the electronic issues at the dealer, Ford should take the truck back.

  5. I have to agree that orange peel is excessive on these cars. Not in all areas, but in my case with my 2011 Sport it is on the liftgate & quarter sail panels. All others areas are fine.

Color match on the bumpers is slightly off but I have seen worse on the aformentioned Lexus's & Toyotas. Being in the buisness, I know it is hard to match paint on dis-similar surfaces. Especially when plastics require different materials for adhesion than metals. Couple that with having a bumper & fender or quarter butt up to each other at the same angle at eye level & the match issue is magnified.

I let the dealer touch one of my cars once. I have an 04 F250 that had some dirt in the tailgate. I took of the gate, removed all the hardware & made it simple for them: Sand & shoot. What I got back looked 5X worse than the original problem. I had them pay me to fix it right.

Orange peel can be removed without a repaint but measurement of clear coat thickness is required. If you wet sand & buff, there needs to be enough clear left on the car to protect from UV light. If too much is sanded off, the clear will eventually haze & subsequently flake.

I can live with the little bit of oarange peel that the car has, but like edgieguy pointed out, you would expect more from a company that wants to compete with & charges a similar price to Toyota/Lexus

  6. Being in the Body Shop biz, I can say PDR might not work because of the proximity to the contour line. Hood may need to be painted, or you can buy the air deflector Ford sells for $80 & it would cover the dent.

I put one on mine to deflect the rocks - worked on by Dakota & F-250 - never a chip.

  7. I really didn't like the Edge when it first came out - looked like another shoe box styled car, but my wife was interested in it after we got one in for repairs at our body shop (She runs that, I run the mechanical shop). It was a 2010 Blue limited AWD and after the suspension work was completed, I took it for a test drive. I was impressed with the ride for what I considered a small vehicle - very smooth. The tech was neat & maybe, just maybe, it wasn't as ugly as I first thought

I was afraid to use the voice recognition stuff - I figured I would end up calling someone by mistake.

That was last spring. I spent the next couple of months trying to rent an Edge so I could drive it for the weekend without having to deal with sales people but did not have much luck - only was able to drive a Flex, which reallly does look like a shoe box.

Put the whole idea on hold until October. I finally broke down & went to the dealer & test drove a 2010 Sport & liked it but could not justify the money they wanted for a demo with 5000 miles on it (2000 less than a 2011 Sport).

So I researched the 2011 Sport & I have to say really liked what they did with the face lift, the engine & all the stuff that came standard on the package. I ordered a Sport FWD in red at the end of October & received it in the middle of December. Other than the usual Ford MyTouch issues we all seem to be having, it has been one sweet ride & gets looks were ever it goes.

  8. Decided to change the oil and searched for a replacement filter. I checked online and the parts store sold me a Motorcraft FL820. turns out that was the wrong filter, it was too thick, and wouldn't screw on without hitting the motor. My friend then had a NAPA filterr brought to his shop which fit. My question is, which is the correct Motorcraft part number?

By the way, at 4K miles, the break in oil was black.

    Motorcraft is FL500S, Service pro is M2500, Napa is 7045. FL820 is for all 4.6,5.4 & 6.8 liter V8's.

  9. I have had the same system maintenance screen come up on my 2011 Sport. This did not happen when I bought it but after the dealer did the first update (I was having problems with connecting to Sync services, so they did an update). After this first update, the USB drive would freeze &/or freeze & skip over songs. The black screen of death is happening to me about 2X per week as well. Ford did another update last week but no change in regards to the crash, but it does seem to take less time for commands to be executed & the USB seems to be not having as many issues.

  10. The 2010 Weathertech digital fit mats fit the 2011 perfectly. I was lucky enough that a shop had them and I tested before I bought and right before the snow!

I got the all weather mats as well from ford and I just put them on top as I like the "EDGE" sign on the factory rubber mats. Lots of clearance under the pedels with them there as well.

    Hope that helps.

I bought the Weathertechs for my 11 Sport too & have no fit problems. It is missing the second hole for the hook on the driver side mat, but I put mine over the factory mats.

  11. So im having a kid, I love the performance of the Forester XT the turbo is nice. But I also love the way the Ford Edge looks. So what I'm trying to see is what car i should get and if you guys could help me out.

I have not owned a Forester but have had & still have a Baja Turbo (wifes) & a new Sport (mine). My wife likes the Baja over the Sport for mainly the handling differences - The sport easily has 500 lbs on the Baja & is more nimble in corners & stopping. I have to agree that the Subaru does handle better, but I have been impressed with how well the Edge does handle given the weight.

Looks wise the Edge is a winner hands down - I park it in front of the window where I work & poeple have stopped in the road & backed up to look at it.

People do that to the wife's truck only to ask "what the hell is that?" :)

  12. Working in the body shop industry for over 25 years I can tell you that at least 20% of the cars all dealers sell have had something happen to them. From minor stuff like this to large collision damage with structural panels having to be replaced.

The most common we have seen is the transport damage - a chain from the truck or something. The heavy collision I've seen has been only on demos.

Needless to say, I've had to give disappointing news to a few owners that their brand new car has had work done to it.

  13. A high shot of the Sport would be easyer to visualize. But a good job by your daughter.

silve wire mesh between the bars would look cool.

It was a really bad pic that she tried her best to work with. She took some new pics yesterday that she will modify with the silver & see how that looks

  14. In other post, I had stated I was considering painting the black grille on my 2011 Sport to the body color. My daughter is the graphics artist, so I asked her to give me a digital representation of what it would look like. Quality is not the best - pic is of the truck inside a dark garage, but the idea was well represented in her work.

As you can see, we opted not adding color to the mesh area between the bars on the grille.

It looks pretty good with the color & I am still mulling it over. For others interested, you can judge what result would be without being suprised.

  15. I called the dealer on 12/10 to see if my Sport arrived & it did & we have it. I never got to drive the 2011 Sport, so I was not sure what to expect with the ride with those big wheels, but I was pleasantly suprised (as was the wife). A little stiff, but no more that I thought it would be & VERY comfy on the highway.

The car looks gorgeous in the candy red - I know black & pearl white are the hot colors in here, but my preference was the red & was not disappointed. I might decide to paint the grille red (I work in a body shop). My daughter said she would Photoshop the grille red to give me a preview of it so I can decide whether to do it or not.

The weather has been crappy here in Chicago the last few days, so when it clears I hope to put up some pics.
