Just checked the 2011 Edge order guide. The base engine (3.5 Ti-VCT) will be rated at 285 hp. Strangely enough, the most powerful Edge, the Sport model with 305 hp, is not available with the towing package.

You might want to check out this Fleetwood folding trailer. Unloaded weight is 2900 lbs, max weight is 3500 lbs, so it's within the limits of the Edge/MKX. It comes with an enclosed bathroom/shower and is available with A/C.

A few things you can do. Before ordering, avoid options that add weight (AWD, moonroof, bigger wheels). If you live in a hot climite, order a light color.

Inflate the tires 5 psi over recommended provided you don't go over the max pressure on the sidewall.

Do a complete changeover to synthetic lubricants including engine, power steering, transaxle and rear differential on the AWD models.

Take a look at doing a CAI and a chip. The chip manufacturers can do either performance or economy tunes for anywhere from 87 to 93 octane.
