  1. You need to reset the mpg readout at each fill up for it to register somewhat accurately. So far in about a month and a half ownership we see about 24mpg strictly hwy cruising at about 70mph and a cumulitive of about 80%hwy/20%local falls in around 21.8 mpg. This is mostly with my wife driving to and from work about 30 miles a day on an 08 Edge SEL FWD. Considering the weight of the vehicle and the horse power I think the mileage is pretty good and am happy with it. This baby will get up and move if you want it to and impressed me and my daily driver is a 300hp Chevy Avalanche. On the subject of break in, there is very little break in on new engines of today and usually within the first 500 miles the break in is complete. Somewhat a subject of controversy on easy or hard break in, I chose to break in ours hard initially. I have rebuilt a few engines and found that works best.
  2. Just a note, these are not meant to protect the paint from stone chips. A lot of times the stone can't be deflected by the air foil that the shield creates. They are more for bugs and bug juice which can harm the paint just as bad if not washed off regularly. They also keep your windshield cleaner at higher speeds when the air foil can effectively draw a bug away from your windshield. Not that it won't also protect from some stones if they hit the shield directly. I have one on my Avalanche and it also doesn't require any bumpers and is ridgid enough by itself and am contemplating putting one on the Edge. Maybe some manufacturers require them and some don't???
  3. Thread back from the grave for an update........... They are available at a lot of aftermarket places on the net. I got mine from svcustoms.com They have them in both light and dark smoke and for 2 or 4 doors. A word of caution about in-channel vents shades from Lund is that they do not bevel the part that goes inside the channel. After installing mine I went to close the window and the window hit the vent shade part in the channel and I found out my new 08 Ford Edge has a safety feature to prevent smashed fingers in power windows because the window hit the plastic from the vent shade and immediately reversed direction. I am returning them and getting the exterior mounted ones. I like the fit and finish of the in channel, but I am not about to put up with having to open the door and pull the vent shade outwards so the window can pass by for the rest of the time I own it. If you really must have the in channel, be aware of this problem before hand. You might get by with beveling the leading edge where the window would contact it, then again you might not. I just wish manufactures of autos would install these things at the factory now that they eliminated gutters on cars. Then they mount the window controls right where the water runs into them on the arm rest. It's time to stop stupidity in my opinion.....
  4. It should be covered in your manual, but the Navigation CD is a slot behind the display face. It has it's own dedicated slot and does not use the front slot. I don't have it myself, but I know there is one button that opens up the face of the display to expose the slot behind the display panel. In there is a button you can push to eject the nav CD.
  5. What they are saying is true about ading Sync to either a 07 or 08 Ford Edge. There is more than meets the eye with additional wiring to the mirror and a USB port to the center console. Currrently there is no option to add it. Someone mentioned a mp3 player. Even without the sync you already have that option. The CD player will play mp3 CDs and there is also a pin plug in the center console glovebox where you can plug in any audio to play through the "aux" on the radio. An Ipod output can be plugged into that as well as any audio source. The only difference is that you must select the songs using the Ipod rather than speaking what artist you wish to play into the rear view mirror microphone. All you need is a 1/8th" stereo pin plug cable with the pin plug on both ends. One end into the audio source and one end into the pin plug socket in the glove box is all there is to it. A much better otpion to clear sound than the FM transmitter type add ons. What I would like to learn probably can not be answered in this forum unless we have some electronics guys who have checked it out. Both radio options for the standard and the GPS Nav system are shown in the SYNC forum, so I know they can both run SYNC and in order to run sync there must be a USB port in the center console glove box. Now, my question would be if there is a cable that can be obtained to just plug in to the radio which is already sync capable that has a plug on one end and a USB port on the other for installation into the glove box. I am quite convinced there is just a cable involved here. If that cable could be accessed it might be quite easy to install Sync. The mic as well might just be a plug in cable. Of course if the mic is a part of the rear view mirror the cable would probably come with it as one unit. Any mic attached to that cable if the correct wiring were done should also work fine and the mic could be mounted elsewhere. I know my radio has media on the steering wheel as well as the radio itself, so the radio is media capable. Sync needs the USB port to program the function into the radio.
  6. Not sure where you live, but my shipping UPS ground quote came to $33.59 for a total of $132.59 and it is a class III hitch which although we don't have class III towing capabilities many want it because they can then use existing receivers whether it be bike rack or small trailer. As far as Curt brand being more proven? How is that? I mean they are both bolt on solid steel hitches designed to handle what they say or face law suits for any failures. How can one be more proven than another?, unless you are quoting Curt hitches claims. I have yet to have any hitch I have ever bought fail. I also have no idea how realtruck can ship 42lbs via UPS for $8.79, so they are padding it elsewhere to make up for low shipping quotes it seems to me. I don't know and I don't care. I really don't care to dispute the differences. I simply said you could buy a hitch for $99 and you disputed that. I gave you the link, you conceded, but then tried to say the Curt hitch is better for some odd reason and say the shipping is more, like you are trying to say what I said wasn't any good info and you had the only good solution to buying a hitch. You spend what you want, where you want and I'll do the same and others can choose whatever they wish also from the information provided. The odds are very good the Curt Hitch and this hitch are one in the same or made by the same company if you know anything about marketing. I mean, like Ford uses only products made by Ford...... right? Are the factory hitches Curt Hitches?.... or generic hitches they get at the best price? My bets are the latter.
  7. Do NOT use Synthetics for your first oil change if you plan on changing oil every 3000 miles like many people still do. Wait till your 2nd oil change. While it might be possible these new engines have a shorter break in period, you do not want to run the risk of improper ring seating. Rings do not seat properly with Synthetic lubricants unless the vehicle came with Synthetics installed upon delivery which I see no indication that the Edge came with them. There are very few vehicles delivered that way and usually only high end, high performance engines in sports cars like the Lambo. The ones that do, carry a notice that the car was delivered with synthetic lubricants. Manufacturers recomendations say to change the oil and filter every 7,500 miles. If you go according to those specs, I see no reason you couldn't use synthetics at the first oil change and thereafter. The engine should definately be broken in by then. On a side note, using Synthetics do maintain a much cleaner engine with virtually no carbon build up, so they are a better product. On the other hand, if you usually do not keep a vehicle more than 100k miles and do a lot of highway driving, using a standard 10w20 detergent oil as per manufactures specs should be fine. I really haven't seen any indication when selling a vehicle years down the road that using Synthetics add a monitary value to a vehicle in resale so you would only be spending extra money for the next owners benifit which they would not give you any extra funds for. The choice is up to you. Oil doesn't matter because oils today exceed manufactures specs. Any oils that claim to be better is only hype for the average car owner. Unless you plan on keeping the car for years and hundreds of thousands if miles, they provide no added benifits
  8. Good grief people. A good rule to follow in any forum is if you don't have an answer, don't reply and don't tell people to go look it up. You people have spent 2 pages on arguing over a reply of "go look it up" or "RTFM" and typed way more than a simple answer to the original question. A simple quick answer and this thread would be two posts long. Don't waste you own time (and ours) with needless arguments trying to sift through garbage to see an answer. If you know, talk, if you don't, shut up and quit arguing, being juvenile and creating bad reputations for yourself. bbf2530, go back and read through this thread and see how much you actually typed and wasted bandwith when it would have been better if you knew the answer to state it. If not, pass the thread by and remain silent. You said the answer was in the manual but yet had to go look it up yourself because in fact you didn't know and didn't know if it was in the manul and wound up finding the answer to the original question after all the garbage. Was there a point to all that? Good Grief..... did it make your day brighter??? If it did, you don't belong in a forum.
  9. If that is the actual weight of the trailer itself, I would say, it's a no. Just make sure that isn't the GVW rating. The trailer itself might weigh much less that that. The GVW would be the max weight of the trailer when fully loaded.
  10. Just a word of caution to you guys installing your own hitches. The factory option to have the tow package installed also includes additional cooling of both the engine and transmission oils due to heat generated from hauling the 3,500 rated towing ability. Agreed, at $395 it is truely a bargain. Here is the problem. If you have the hitch option installed by the dealer, they do not install the engine cooler or the trans cooler for $395. They just install a hitch. Don't pay $395 for just a hitch. They are as cheap as $99 on the net. Harness around $50. Now, the 2nd problem. Without the engine cooling (larger radiator) or the trans cooler, you can not tow the rated $3,500lbs. It will cause problems in both the engine and transmission overheating and most likley cause damage. I discussed this with the dealer and he came back and said towing capacity would be reduced to 2,00lbs. Where he came up with that I don't know. I can't say myself what the towing capacity would be reduced to but I do know it would be reduced. The vehicle itself in it's weight class determines the towing capacity and at 3,500lbs the towed vehicle would HAVE TO have it's own brakes whether they be surge or electric. That goes without saying. It must go beyond that with engine and trans cooling and in the stock form without a FACTORY tow package the stock cooling for both is inadequate. I can't say which would fail first without the added cooling, but at least with the engine you are notified about an overheat situation. Not so with the transmission. Seeing as the trans is cooled through the radiator it probably would add some temp to the engine sensors for overheating, but I am not sure if that increased temp notification would protect the transmission from damage. I notice one guy said he added a hitch and is going to tow a boat over 3000lbs. That would NOT be advisable without additional trans cooling at the very least. Use caution and do some additional investigation before proceeding if you have a dealer installed hitch or if you installed the hitch yourself. Trust me. I have been towing things for 40 years now and have experienced or seen many of the pitfalls, so I know of what I speak. I also picked up an 08 Edge this past Sunday and will have to self install a hitch and dingy tow bar. Awesome vehicle in my opinion and I am not really a Ford Man and this is the first new Ford I have ever purchased. I was that impressed with it, but I also realise it's limitations. You can't have a great fuel ecomomy vehicle and a a great tow vehicle in the same breath and even the higher HP V-8's need additional cooling to be used as tow vehicles. I have my 300hp Avalanche for that.
