  1. I believe your problem is the transmission valve body. The valve body is the control center of the automatic transmission. It contains a maze of channels and passages that direct hydraulic fluid to the numerous valves which then activate the appropriate clutch pack or band servo to smoothly shift to the appropriate gear for each driving situation. Each of the many valves in the valve body has a specific purpose and is named for that function. For example the 2-3 shift valve activates the 2nd gear to 3rd gear up-shift or the 3-2 shift timing valve which determines when a downshift should occur.

This problem occurred in our Edge. I took a week to repair because they got the wrong parts.

    Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I stopped by Ford and the Trans mechanic explained it's a rare occurrence and only had heard of this one other time. He reset a chip to default code (not sure which one)....have not had any problems since. Of course this only happened twice in 2/half years but both times in the last month.

Question: Did Ford replace your trans valve body? Curious if they mentioned anything that may have caused this in your car...?

    Thanks -

  2. 2008 SEL - Any thoughts on this occurrence would be appreciated:

Today I slowed down on the main road to turn into into my driveway. I was moving pretty slow when I entered the driveway so I slightly pushed on the gas to drive up to the garage and to my surprise the tach was revving up but the Edge was just barely moving forward. I looked down at the gear shift as I thought it slipped into neutral or something...? I could rev the engine but the Edge just barely moved forward.I put it in reverse and then Drive again and it came back to normal. I had this same thing happen a month ago but I thought it was just some kind of low gear shift change or something. It's funny that it has only only occurred twice under the same situation: I slow down on the main road to turn into the drive....then push on the gas slightly and the tach revs but the car barely moves forward. It would be as if you're on an ice rink trying to accelerate. I have 32K miles on the SEL...has been a gem up unto this occurrence...?

    Thanks for any thoughts,

    Andy

  3. 08 SEL with 30K miles: This morning the driver door couldn't be opened from the outside and I had to pull the lever inside from the passenger seat (the other doors operate OK). When I started the engine, the "Driver Door Ajar" alert on the dash stayed lit. After I drove for about 15 minutes, I opened and shut my driver door and the :Driver Door Ajar" sign went out. This has never happened before - I was thinking since the temps dropped in the teens over night, could this be a temperature related issue? Does anyone know of this scenario happening? The problem of course is that the Edge will not allow the doors to lock while I'm driving with a "Door Ajar" alert lit.

I'm still under warranty and Ford said I would have to keep it overnight so the problem can be duplicated for them to look at.

    Thanks for any suggestions -

  4. What model Michelin tires are on your 08.

P245/60R18 - they do a good job. The dealer mentioned he has a sale running on Continentals that he claims wear better than the Michelins. Hmmmm..? Not sure what to make of Continentals vs Michelins but I'll stick with the Michs for now.

  5. wire in the nozzle outlet would be my 1st try to make sure it is not clogged

    FYI:

I removed the under-hood heat shield and found the passenger side pray nozzle had cracked off where it connects to the fluid hose and was just hanging....hence the fluid was just pumping out under the hood. The Edge is under warranty so Ford replaced it at no cost. Not sure what caused it to crack in the first place,,,

  6. Funny thing is I test drove a 2010 today to see if I liked it. Hot as hell outside, cranked up the A/C and ""WHAT"" is this...seems like they forgot a blower speed on the system. Mind you, this was a brand-spanking-new Edge with 20+ miles on it. Tried to readjust the vents, crank the temp down on the auto A/C, but nothing happened. Will it stop me from buying my 2011 Sport? Hell no. But the wife's $20k 2010 Mustang blows harder and colder than the Edge.....hell so does my Raptor.

Personally I think they had some left over Pinto A/C systems that they were dying to get rid of. :)

I drive an 08 SEL - now 26000 miles - really enjoy the Edge but the AC vents could be more effective. Drove an 08 Taurus-X (same engine layout as Edge) and was surprised how cool and powerful the dash AC vents were. I was wondering if anyone has had to recharge the AC system refrigerant in their Edge....? Maybe this is a 30K mile check point at Ford?

  7. Hi all, 1st post.

Have a '10 Edge SEL and love it. But my wife has a major issue with reflections from the center console alum trim around the radio/temp controls.

It seems to me that Ford kind of blew it when they put a buffed alum/black striped trim piece that seriously reflects sunlight. My wife is hypersensetive to light like this, and I too have had my eyes saturated with reflections. Then add the highly reflective (chrome) trim bezels around the L-center and R-center ventilation outlets, and I now have a new project. Polarized sunglasses are not the answer, at least not for our eyes.

Does anyone know if the center trim piece can be easily removed, and if so, how?

I'd like to get it painted, powder-coated, or anodized to a black matte finish to kill reflections.

I know there are transfer kits to change the look of this trim, but I don't think that's the direction I want to go in, yet.

    Thx in advance.

Alternative which I've purchased that is custom fitted and cuts down on the dash glare and heat build up (protects the dash also): http://www.dashtopper.com/

  8. I'm looking at the 2010 Edge. Wish I could hold out for 2011 but my lease expires end of this month so I have to do something. I was hoping to get an SEL but without the so-called chrome clad wheels which look like plastic to me. What is underneath those covers? Is there an alloy wheel beneath that could be polished.

Also, my other concern with Edge, in general, is the transmission that has no sport mode or way to get to another gear manually. I live in California and drive over a relatively long grade every day to work. For years I have always had a car that I could kick down into the next lower gear to keep the revs up and stay with traffic. I was considering the Sport model with tighter suspension and bigger wheels but it seems like the inability to use the gears a little would make that option much less attractive.

The Edge is my first choice in appearance but these things concern me. Any comments from owners would be greatly appreciated.

    Bill

I've driven an SEL FWD for 2 years and have never had a problem with pulling grades, hills, etc.. I disengage the 'over-drive' when pulling steeper grades to downshift which gives more RPMs and quicker acceleration. Ford seems to have done well on the auto trans gear ratios and overdrive in/out button. I have 18 in chrome clad wheels and get a lot of compliments on them......never thought about removing them so I['m not sure about the stock rims' appearance.

  9. look up amsoil... for both tranny and motor.

Thanks - I've always used full synthetic 5W-20 in my SEL. After reading Amsoil's white paper I'm going to have the Ford dealer change the trans fluid to full synthetic.

  10. They have been making the filters smaller for about a year now. They say it is for easier installation and removal but also did it so they could save on shipping, the smaller filter size will result in the pallet quantity being increased by one layer or 120 pieces. There are no changes to the performance attributes of the oil filter.

I guess the Edge will still take 5 and half quarts for oil change and the newer filter?

  11. I was stunned to find that the paint on leading edges of both rear wheel arches on my '07 Edge is bubbling. The local dealer was quick to point out that at 110,000 Km, I can participate in Ford's cost share program --for a minimum ante of $250, or... hope that the panels perforate before 5-years... because that's the only way Ford will do anything. Memories of rusty fords all over again!

I'll decide what to do in my case, meanwhile... I encourage all Edge owners to regularly inspect their wheel arches for similar problems.

I dropped by the local Ford dealer today to have two of the wheel's on my 08 Edge inspected for some paint "bubbling" on the outer lip. It was so subtle that you could feel it more than see it but the car is still under warranty so they ordered 4 new wheels for replacement. Run your finger around the rim edge and if it's not smooth as glass chances are this same thing might start happening to yours. Just thought I would mention it.

  12. The past 4 vehicles I've owned have been Ford models. Right now I own an 08 SEL Edge and enjoy the drive. I would have preferred Ford to install an oil pressure, battery amp and engine temp gauge (marked with degrees) in the Edge's dashboard rather than the saucer size tachometer. Most drivers don't use a tach to drive by....especially with an automatic trans. The other gauges would have been more practical for the average driver. We all know when you see a red "dummy light" come on it's too late.....

Curious if anyone else has the same thoughts about this....thanks

  13. :banghead: 2007 Edge SEL w/21K miles

I was coming home with my wife yesterday. About 2 miles from home while merging into traffic, the transmision acted as if it downshifted all the way to first and then would not upshift. It also periodicly acted as if it were in neutral. The "Open-end wrench" idiot light appeared on the dash followed by the "Engine" idiot light.

We got the vehicle home, but it does not seem to be drivable and will be into the dealer Monday moring sharp.

    Anyone experience anything like this???

I haven't had any trans issues on the 08 SEL so I can't share any suggestions. That's a bummer even though it's under warranty - certainly not representative of Ford's quality. I would be interested in knowing what your dealer has to say (and does).

  14. This is good news about your Edge. I was curious if your dealer explained exactly what component(s) of the throttle body is actually binding. I'm not familiar with what makes up a throttle body (linkage?)

    Thanks -

Sorry I am late with status on my 07 Edge stalling problem. I was in an accident with my beautiful 1999 mint condition Taurus. Someone went through a stop sign and T-boned my passenger side. No one was hurt in both cars; I just dropped my son off at school. Both doors smashed in, windows broken, glass everywhere. (and in my fresh cup of coffee to boot!) It happened right in front of a police station. I walked over, rung the bell and told them I was in an accident.

Ok back to the 07 Edge stalling problem. It is fixed!!!! It turned out to be the throttle body. “Throttle body was binding when HOT, replaced throttle body” The Edge has been running fine since the repair. We drove down to Florida no problems.

The only good thing about my baby (99 Taurus) getting hit was that the insurance company totaled it…err I mean her. I went out and purchased a brand new 2010 Taurus. I was lucky enough to find a dealer that had one in stock. I jumped on it and got it. I could hardly get out of the dealer the day I picked it up. People wanted to sit in it so they could maybe order one. Talk about a head turner…when I drive down the road I see more heads turn than at a tennis match!!! (or Obama reading his teleprompter) :)

The 2010 Ford Taurus is Beautiful!!!! (sadly I have forgotten about my baby already)

    God Bless America!!!

PS- funny thing about lawyers, after my accident report went on public record. I must have gotten 20 letters from lawyers “telling” me that I was injured and that they will help me get money for my pain and suffering. Thanks to them I have some nice magnets and cup holders, oh yeah one even sent a nice magnifying glass.

  15. Are you using full synthetic 5W20?

No engine temp fluctuations at all that I saw - I did keep an eye on it initially but then when nothing happened I only watched it sporadically. I did not change the oil. I had it changed just before the trip and as soon as I got home. I reasoned that at 8,000 km between official changes and the fact that it was pretty well all highway driving I did not need to change the oil. When i checked my oil after the trip it visually appeared much cleaner than it does after the normal 6 to 8000 km of general driving.
  16. Sounds like a nice trip...Did you notice any engine temp gauge fluctuation when pulling the mountains in warmer weather? I think Ford should have installed an oil pressure gauge on the dash. Also, did you change the oil during the trip?

Just completed an 11,000 trip in my 2008 AWD LTD Edge, most of it (99%) towing a covered trailer with my MC inside. Now have almost 30,000km on it. Trip was from Ontario to NM up to Alberta via CO, WY and Montana and back to Ontario via the transcanada. Used no oil. Performed flawlessly especially when using cruse control and with the OD locked out. Was very comfortable at 102/105 km/hour (verified using GPS). AC worked more than adequately in temps as high as +38C. Could have used more tourque since gearbox was hunting a bit in the mountains but the HP made the pulling power very acceptable. One time (in the middle of a Manitoba mosquito infestation) the rear door refused to latch using the remote, closed it using the time honoured tradition of brute force and ignorance (Those Manitoba mosquitos have a way of helping you make quick decisions). Problem self corrected later after switching off the ignition to gas up. Note when I tried switching off the ignition at the time it did not work. Mileage was all over the place with a low of 14.1L per 100km to a high of 17.4L per 100km. Lows were coming out of NM and through CO. and in AB/SK in the prairies. Highs were coming across OK, TX and into NM. Only pattern I can see is the direction of the wind although lower octane regular gas in OK/TX/ and NM may have played a role. Once I clicked that their gas was 95 octane where-as everywhere else was 96 and I changed to mid grade mileage improved. However may be nothing more than co-incidence. Speedometer continued to show variations, sometime agreeing perfectly with the GPS and sometime reading up to 5km high. Trend there seems to be that error is greatest when accelerating and almost spot on when de-accelerating. Stopped at Flying J's most of the time and slept in the back so cost of accommodation was (for the most part) $8.50 (Same in Canada and the US) for a shower.
