I think I also have the same issue or at least a related issue. My 2007 Edge check engine light came on. Code P0018, "Cam/Crankshaft position sensor A-bank 2". The first time I took it to the dealer they said that there was nothing that they could find wrong and they reset the code. It came back two weeks later. Now it has been in the shop for 3 days and they were on the phone all afternoon with Ford. They are vague about what is wrong. They are awaiting parts and will start work on it next week. They say it will be about a day and a half of work and that the engine must be torn down. Also at about the same time the check engine light came on, the engine started to emit a grinding sound right after it starts but only the first thing in the morning, never later in the day on subsequent starts. I am understandably unhappy about such a major repair to my Edge. I am very meticulous about my car and for what I paid for it, I expect better. At first the dealer sait it was not covered under warranty (at 42,000 miles) but they now say it may be covered by the drive train warranty. I am less than sure that it will be a covered repair. My reading of the warranty leaves me also less than convinced that it is covered. After buying 4 new Fords in 5 years, this could end my relationship with them if this issue is not resolved and at no cost to me.
Stay tuned for how this thing turns out.
