  1. I'm new to buying gas at Chevron, but now that I bought this Edge, I would like to give it some good gasoline other than my usual Kroger, HEB or Valero.

I noticed that the mid grade is as much as the higher grade from the places I'm used to.

Can someone please tell me what grade gasoline will be okay to put in my Edge from Chevron? I put in the middle grade from Chevron, the next one up from Regular and it was a little over $4 bucks per gallon this morning.

Anyone who can educate me on this would be wonderful.

    Thanks,

Use regular. But fuels like Texaco, Chevron, Shell and I think Mobil and maybe a few other have cleaners to prevent carbon deposits. I am not sure Exxon or Valero have these. Just add Chevron Techroline additive every few tanks if you can, but try to use the "Top Tier" fuels, whatever that means.

By the way, does your A/C blow cold enough for you in hot weather and are do your brkaes seem strong enough???

  2. Hi cbEdge. :D Unfortunately, you misunderstood both the meaning and the intent of my reply. Nobody in this thread, including me (since obviously I am "the one"), stated to ""RTFM - Read the @#$%ing Manual" (your words).

I took the time to copy and paste information from the Owners Manual (not "RTFM") meant to help other members try and obtain maximum AC efficiency. This information was meant for those who may not have been aware of it.

Certainly there is nothing wrong wrong with that, correct? If you were aware of the information I posted, that is good. But perhaps others did not know this information.

In fact, it was obvious that some were not aware of this information. That is why most of us are here; To help each other by exchanging information.

In addition, I also added this specific statement (and this is an exact quote from my post), "If the above tips do not help, best bet is to bring it in for service". So I acknowledged the fact that our fellow members complaints are valid ones, and if the Owners Manual information does not help they should bring their vehicle to the Dealer. Not sure how you can equate any of that to being a rude statement like "RTFM". That is something I have never said to anyone, in any forum.

Nowhere do I or anyone else in this thread state that we doubt some Edge owners may have AC systems that are not running as well as they should. Again, simply mentioned tips that are in the Owners Manual, then recommended seeing the Dealer for service if there is still a problem. Makes complete sense if read properly.

    Much different advice than "RTFM".

Hopefully you now understand that my intent was not to be rude at all. I was just trying to help those who asked for help.

    Good luck. :beerchug:

GEEEZZ first it's weak breaks. Now it's weak A/C

Staff. Are you reading these posts???????????????

  3. Hey DUCKRACER. We just towed our 2 Sea-Doos with our Edge. We are out in the San Fernando Valley and towed them up to Sacramento last week. The Edge did awesome all around!! Even pulled the Grapevine quite well. The Sea-Doo's weigh about 2700lbs including a single axle Zieman trailer with no trailer brakes. We have the factory class II hitch (the small 1 1/4" one). Averaged about 18mpg round trip. No clomplaints what so ever. Just don't go over the 3500lb weight.

Thanks, 818. That is encouraging, especially when you consider that the grapevine is much steeper that the Cajon and the fact that my Ducati only weighs about 385lbs. Thanks again for your response.

  4. Okay, so i am a little new to car mods and such. I am interested in putting another muffler type system on the car. My edge (white sand, FWD, vista roof, sel) looks so cool but is so darn quiet. Anyway, i have been doing some research on the forum and found several people who have done mods. As i understand from looking under the car the exhaust funnels down into what looks like the first muffler (i herd it has two mufflers) and then continues on to a second muffler which then splits into the dual exhaust outlets.

Now, here is the catch. The car is leased and i want to be able to take the car back to the muffler shop and put the old system back on when i turn in the car. So, is there a way to set this up so as to replace only the 2 mufflers with less restrictive after markets or is there going to be a bit more surgery than that.

    Thanks in advanced

    Cameron

BTW, got 21mpg on the last tank 60/40 freeway/city

I have never been under an Edge, but my guess is that the first set of "mufflers" are the catalytic converters, also known as "cats". So what you want is a "cat back" system, meaning from the back of the cats to the end of the exhaust tip. Most systems slide out of the stock fittings on the cats, so putting the stock system back on should not be a problem. But, just in case, ask the muffler shop that installs the system if they will be able to put the stock system back on before having them doing anything to your Edge, and make SURE that they give you the stock system when you pick up your Edge afer the installation. Gibson Exhaust makes them for trucks, but maybe they also make them for cars.

    Good Luck!

  5. I participate in motorcycle roadraces about 20 mi. North of Lancaster, Ca. at Willow Springs Raceway. To get there I must go up and down the Cajon Pass I-15. I currently have an '04 Ford PSD F-250. I also have a motorcycle ramp that attaches into the reciever and carries the bike parallel to the tailgate.

In light of fuel prices and the fact that I don't really need a full sized pickup to haul a 385 lb. Ducati, a generator, fuel cans and a shade tent around, I have started thinking about a crossover. The Flex looks cool, but it seems too heavy and seems overkill since it is just my wife and our Sheltie and an Escape might not be big or powerful enough so I am seriously looking at the Edge

The trailer wouldbe about 5x12 enclosed and allow us to get to the track on Fri. afternoon of the race weekend and leave the trailer at the track to hold hold a space close to the track entrance and tech inspection for practice on Sat. and racing on Sunday while we spend the nights in the local motel.

Form what I have read, the Edge will have no problem going UP the Cajon and I think uphill towing would be OK since gravity and the trailer hitch would stabilize the trailer behind the EGDE.

So here's my problem. I have no problem leaning into a curve at 140mph with a pack of bikes around me, but the thought of driving down the grade of the Cajon Pass in the slow lane (mandated in Ca.) with a 40+ ton semi tailgating me and the semi in front of me putting on its breaks gives me night sweats. Especially considering the posts that claim the the Edge brakes aren't the strongest.

So any input you can give a towing novice about how an Edge handles downhill towing would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

  6. I also installed a Curt hitch over the weekend. It was the one recommended in the first topic indicated below.

However, I have a couple of notes:

Right on! They came off so easily after I used the weasel piss that I was worried about them coming off after I rehung the exhaust.

Not in my kit... all the bolts were the same size.

This confused me a bit at first when the instructions talk about fishing these things through the holes in the frame (and it sounds like some are fishing it through the end of the frame. For one thing, my 2007 does not have any "access holes" in it big enough to fish the bolt and spacer through. Second, I guess you could try to fish these bolts through the end of the frame, but I didn't see how that was even possible with the short little fish tool provided. And third, there are a couple of threaded washers welded to the inside of the frame that will totally get in the way of the spacers. I had to reach my hand in and orient them in such a way as to make them lay flat against the frame to accept the bolt. I would actually wager that anyone trying to do this by fishing these things through did not get these installed nice and flat to the bottom of the frame. Any way you figure it, do yourself a favor and take off the bumper. It is easy and makes installing the bolts a breeze.

I hired two lackeys to hold it up for me while I hand tightened the first two bolts on! But the motorcycle jack sounds handy if you can't get the help.

I did a test haul with my camper and it this thing pulls it like it was nothing... this thing really hauls well. I have actually pulled this with same camper with a Ford F150 and the Edge pulls it just as well. It has a lot of power and drives so smooth although the trailer does have a weight equalization system which may account for the smooth ride.

Here is a picture, I don't know if this will work, but:

Bob: Where the heck do you live? That picture looks like your Edge and trailer are parked in HEAVEN!

  7. My 08 SEL FWD has about 5000 miles and the best I've seen so far (combined freeway and city driving) is 18.3 MPG. I was hoping for 20 overall when I leased the Edge-- a bit of a disapointment. Anyway, even though I like everything else about the car, I will be seriously considering the "ugly" 60 MPG Toyota Prius in 2010-- enough is enough. Gas in So Cal is already at $4.00 a gallon, so the Prius is looking better and better!

bkin I live in So Cal just like you. I would like would like you to consider two things. First, if you sell your Edge you will take a huge loss in resale value and even at 4+$/gal you can buy a lot of gas with the money you will lose on trade-in. Second, if you run the a/c in city driving (something you MUST do in SoCal) the gas motor will be running, even at a stop, so you will never see the astronimical city mpg the Prius totes.

If you must sell your Edge, consider the 35 mpg Ford Focus or maybe wait for the Ford Verve/Fiesta.

Lastly, go to americansolutions.com and sign the petition to DRILL HERE! DRILL NOW! PAY LESS

    Good Luck, whatever you do.

  8. I would greatly appreciate it if a "Staff" or someone working for Ford would tell us when and if the Edge will get an EcoBoost engine option and if so, will it be a twin-turbo? will it be a 3.5 V-6?

I understand that a 2010 EcoBoost Edge might put a damper on the sales of 2009 Edges so you may be reluctant to give all the details, but please tell us what you can.

    Thanks.

Here's the answer and it is YES to Ecoboost for the EDGE!htthttp://www.fordedgeforum.com/index.php?showtopic=1790&st=0&p=13371entry13371p://www.businessweek.com/lifestyle/content/jan2008/bw2008014_388136.htm

  9. You seem to be in the know on all things Brakes. Can I after my brakes wear out have my dealer up-grade the rotors and calipers to a size larger, like the AWD ones if its true that these are larger then for the FWD version. Any advise thanks.

I bet that BREMBO makes some rotors/calipers that will do the trick.

  10. I agree the Ford Edges come with Semi-Syntnetic from the factory, the only reason not full synthetic is the cost. But all new vehicles can use synthetic from 0 miles all the way up. As for K & N filters, I have used them on all my race vehicles and on road vehicles with the best of luck, it is just an opinion thing. If in a dusty climate a pre-charger is recommended but if using a K & N filter you can not just spray it and get it soaking wet with the oil. Also they work better when they do get dirty and do not recommend cleaning for 50,000 miles but of course I clean it every 5,000 miles.

I have raced the Baja 500 and 1000 as well as district 38 AMA and never had an engine failure with K & N and some people use the foam type and never have failure either, it is preference, yes the paper allows more air then foam but the Edge's airbox is enclosed and not running a conical style air filter as in cold ai intakes.

My experience is 22 years certified mechanic, I also am OMC certified as well as Paxman Valenta racing diesel RP200M certified and racing offroad vehicles since I was 5 years old. I believe in K & N and IMO they work great as well as synthetic, less heat, more HP and MPG as well.

Also take a look at Amsoil site, they will provide analysis on their oil and do not recommend oil changes for 25,000 miles and I put in my 05 Harley and lowered engine temp but 18 degrees, which is a lot for an air cooled engine and dyno tested 3 more HP and got 2 more MPG....

    Lee

Lee I raced District 37 for 10 years and traveled many thousands of miles in Baja on various dirt bikes.

One thing you need to watch out for is that if the K&N is oiled too heavily on a modern vehicle, the oil will evetually coat the air mass sensor. I recently was at a Pep Boys and saw for sale cans of air mass sensor cleaners, so it must be a common occurance. Have you ever been to Sanfrancisquito Bay? It is about 70 miles south of bay of L.A. I am too old to do off road racing, so about 8 years ago I started motorcycle road racing.

  11. my bad then... but have I not seen a commercial that has that guy talking about how he use to love to work on his moms car and race cars (and shows an old school 50's photo of him sitting on a car hood) and then he goes on to say something like "but I always liked working on them more"... and it turns into an EcoBoost commercial, shows him driving an Edge, EcoBoost data and imagery and then he says something like "if you could put a v6 in and make it perform better than a v8, wouldn't you want that" and then the print mentions something like "coming in 2009 on select 2010 models"???

I am almost positive the whole commerical is EcoBoost and he is driving an Edge and it mentions 2010. or am I smoking crack? I seem to recall that commercial stands out in my head as I kind of remember saying 2 myself (1) why are they talking about a 2010 release in 2008 and (2) great, I could have gotten an Edge with that engine.. so, it seemed a logical jump for me to see EcoBoost an Edge and put that together.

http://www.fordvehicles.com/forddriveone/ - there is an EcoBoost commercial, page 3, not the one I speak of mind you, but it shows the Edge 2 times in the commercial. yeah, yeah I know "but Lex, there is a disclaimer that says 'coming in 2009 on select 2010 models'".. but then I would ask "Ford puts out a dozen cars, why put one on the commercial that would not be relative to the announced product?"

Thanks, guys. It seems you have answered my question as best as you can. So the answer is Yes, No, Maybe;-)

  12. I would greatly appreciate it if a "Staff" or someone working for Ford would tell us when and if the Edge will get an EcoBoost engine option and if so, will it be a twin-turbo? will it be a 3.5 V-6?

  13. Yes, $25 for my peace of mind it is worth it. Oil refining and processing has come a long ways since the good ol days (I am NOT making a jab here). Most oil brands take longer to break down than before and offer more protection along the way.

I change (will change) every 7500 miles per the warranty - this oil does not break down in that time (per my Mazda and other lab reports from various conditions). I also do stop n go as well as highway (which alot of the time IS stop n go).

Lets do the math for the number of oil changes for 15000 miles. I assume your price has the oil filter. My oil filter is Mobil1 10.68 locally.

    At 3000 miles:

    3000 25.99

    6000 25.99

    9000 25.99

    12000 25.99

    15000 25.99

    Total $129.95

At 7500 Miles (In warranty and my particular brand is Amsoil - I would think the Ford would NOT break down at 7500 miles either)

$27.78 for the oil 5.5 qts (bought in cases though) - does the edge have 5 or 5.5 qts - i forget - did only 1 oil change. Lets assume it is 5.5.

    $10.68 for filter.

$0.00 for labor - will always do it myself - have a heated garage which helps

    $0.00 for disposal

    7500 35.93

    7500 35.93

    Total $79.91.

That is a large difference imo. NOTE: this is my opinion and only MY practices. If your peace of mind comes at 3000 miles that is your benefit. In the end, it is your car not mine.

I will have even more savings when I am out of warranty - usually two years with the amount of miles we put on vehicles. I will switch to the longer life Amsoil oil 25K miles and do changes every 20K miles. I have seen the lab reports in person and know the drivers. It does not break down.

For reference, i need this car to last 8 years (or 192K miles) to recoup the costs. Any extra protection I get the better.

Just my $0.01 and you can toss that into a well if you need.

    Solas

I bet if you read the owners manual it will say something to the effect that 7500mi is ok under normal driving conditions and more often if you drive under "severe" conditions. Read further and I bet severe conditions include short trips or stop and go driving as wall as the usual towing and dusty conditions.

So in reality if you commute with your car, it is being driven under severe conditions and needs the oil changed a lot sooner that 7500k mi per the owners manual.

  14. My wife and I got a 2008 Ford Edge about a month ago. We love everything about it BUT...

We are getting some much lower MPG than estimated. Now it was listed as 16 City / 24 Hwy. I understand that these are estimates and averages BUT...

we are getting about 14 PERIOD. This is probably about 80% city driving 20% hwy driving. We don't drive aggressively.

The car IS new (only 900 miles on it). Is it possible there is a problem with the car? Should we take it into Ford to check out?

Or is this normal, will the mileage improve? I'm seeing people on this forum averaging 17 - 18 in the city. I'd be totally fine with that.

    Please advise. Thanks!

You don't say how you figured your mileage. You might ingore the mpg reading on your vehicles readout. Fill you tank. Set your trip odometer to 0. When you have used 3/4 tank, fill your tank again to the same level you did before. Divide the miles by the gallons and you will get your true mileage.
