Turns out that the light was simply disconnected. Plugged it in and it works fine.

I bought a used 2015 SEL with 3.5 V6 in September. I noticed shortly afterwards that the cargo light (rear luggage area) didn't work. The owner's manual said that this was a non-owner serviceable bulb (it's an LED, apparently) so I noted it as something to talk to the dealer about when I had some other warranty items addressed. I had the work done recently, and was told that this vehicle didn't come equipped with that light - it is dome light only. Can that be correct? It has a lens that certainly looks like a light.

My guess is that this is a safety feature to ensure drivers turn on their headlights at dusk. The dash lights will dim and eventually shut off completely when the headlights are off and the ambient light drops below a certain value. I have seen VW do the same thing.
