  1.

What makes you think Ford isn't doing everything they can to fix the problem as fast as possible?

What makes you think that they are? Question can go both ways.

I've been in 3 times and had my wheel swapped 3 times. Along with other folks having problems.

Report it to NHTSB to get an escalation started for a Ford recall. Simple.

  2. Yes trouble codes look like that. It if you got the Check Adaptive/Active Steering Message in the cluster AND it has CB100 (any variant) in the SECM then you get a new steering wheel which contains the SECM (steering effort control module).

BTW the TSB says the old steering wheel goes in the garbage...Ford doesn't even want them back.

After the 2 newer replacement (SECM aka Steering Wheels) from Ford which didn't work, they pulled one out of a new car from the dealer lot. So my fix in the end was to swap the wheel from a new car. So I'm actually still using an old part.

    Wonderful.

  3. There is another TSB that just came out:

    Nov 3 2016 3960 - 2016 Edge/MKX - Adaptive/Active Steering - Check Adaptive/Active Steering Message Illuminated With DTC C1B00

    See TSB: 16-2066 for details.

It calls for replacing the steering wheel:

Issue: Some 2016 Edge/MKX vehicles equipped with adaptive/active steering may exhibit a check adaptive/active steering message illuminated in the instrument panel cluster (IPC) message center with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) C1B00 stored in the steering effort control module (SECM).

Bingo. My dealer replaced the Steering Wheel... TWICE. 1st one Adaptive Steering wasn't working, 2nd one was Grinding when turning the wheel. FWIW, the steering wheel part number has been discontinued, Ford referred to a new steering wheel part number. (of both didn't work)

After escalations with FoMoCo and having my car at the dealer for about 20 days, 3rd pickup. Ford realized that one more trip would meet Michigan Lemon Law. It would be qualified for buyback from the manufacture. In Michigan it is 4 repairs for the same issue or 30 days on in-service.

Anyways, I got my car back on Friday and it seems to be fine for now. Only put a couple hundred miles on it since I got it back.

How did they fix it? Let's say there is a new Edge Sport in the back new dealer lot that is missing a steering wheel.

  4. The Sport active steering setting actually just recalibrates the wheel to require more effort at low and highway speeds. I am not sure what it does to the adjustment of steering ratios as you drive, but I have never gone back to the normal mode since I switched it to be on the sport steering setting all the time. The normal setting feels too light and floaty for my taste.

I am glad that Ford is making progress on this issue. That is the downfall of being volunteered to test cutting edge technology. I still believe this will be an isolated incident. Notice that since this thread started, we really havn't had a whole lot of people running here to report this problem. There are likely at least 10000 2016 Sports on the roads and a high failure rate would have caused a stampede to the internet forums. Since the 2016's have been out for over a year now, some have probably hit high miles.

It does more than require more effort. It changes the ratio of the steering so you can have the best of both worlds. Relaxed driving and then a sportier steering response. SECM is basically the steering wheel. There is a module behind it that has a ring pinion gear and motor attached. The ratio changes in the steering in BOTH modes according to the speed of the vehicle. This system is never fully OFF.

  5. CapeDave , I tried new car idea on ford service rep in Florida. I paid for a car that should be operable and mine is not. I thought I should get a replacement .Ford said 'no way' .they know what problem is and will have fix nov 29. The said it about as callously as anyone would. Dealer says they should replace but no help coming from Ford.

I will not be ever comfortable driving the car . The least expensive option to me seems to be to get best deal from dealer on an Edge without steering option.

I generally but a new car every two years ,this is the last Ford ever..

VERY IMPORTANT to get action on this....

Make sure you report your issue in detail here: https://www-odi.nhts...hicleComplaint/

It only takes about 5-10 minutes.

  6. Just took our Edge back into the dealership. The warning light is now staying on and I notice the steering wheel has moved a tad to the left while going straight. I'm now at 5500 miles.

I also filed a complaint, as was suggested, to the NHTSA. This might be nothing more than a software issue. Then again... it could be something very serious.

What is really irritating is that Ford doesn't make a care available when you have an obvious design problem on a brand new car.

    Sorry to hear..

Nope, not software. It's a steering module harness problem. Make sure you keep a log of dates/times it happens. In most states, after 4 times for the same issue it's considered to be lemon and eligible for buyback.

The loaner is all on the dealer. I would push the dealer for one. Mentioning of the service survey works like magic in some situations.

  7. Hi all,

My adaptive steering fault light came on this AM and I'm feeling sick ---we've only had our 2016 Ford Edge Sport for 1 month. To make matters worse, this was our replacement car for our diesel VW--ughhhh... So my questions to those who have dealt with this issue so far is:

-Did the steering wheel need to be replaced or is this just a computer glitch?

-how long did the repair take (sounds like a long time for some)?

-did your warranty cover it? We do not have an extended warranty - just the basic - but the car has less than 2,000 miles

-is it safe to drive, at least for the next two days. I transport my kids in this car and I want to be sure it's safe.

    Thank you!!

I wish I would have kept my previous VW... :-(

They supposedly replaced the steering wheel twice on mine, and the adaptive steering still isn't right. The part #s of the replacement wheels were different than the original one that came on the car.

    3 weeks and still going....

Yes and better be covered under the bumper to bumper warranty

I also have 2 kids and have lost all confidence in this car. I refuse to drive my 2 kids in it. I'm driving a loaner from the dealer.

Ford Customer Service is the worst that I have ever experienced. They are playing a game. The rep accidentally called my mobile instead of the dealer and they left a message regarding me and my vehicle as if she was leaving a message for them. The things that were said did NOT have the customer's best interest or care in mind. I'll leave it at that. Absolutely horrible service and treatment.

  8. Once you get it fixed, just gradually build your faith back up in the car. Fill it up with a few tanks of premium, go stomp some unsuspecting ricers with fart can mufflers, and I guarantee you will start to feel better. I am hoping it is just an isolated incident.

Unfortunately with 2 kids in the back seat I will not be doing that anytime soon. My thoughts will be about gripping the wheel and making sure it does want to turn or change direction unexpectedly.

I'm glad that stomping on unsuspecting ricers helps you personally.

It will take a bit more than that for me.. especially when I'm driving around with precise cargo that is irreplaceable.

  9. Did you get what his name was? There is one in our general region who really is an arrogant ass. I may have dealt with the same one before.

All of these active steering issues are concerning me considering that I precisely get a new car to avoid issues like these. I have an insane schedule with absolutely no time for anything, so this is disheartening to hear. I do not like this active steering and did not want it, but Ford decided to make it standard for the 2016's. To me, it feels way too artificial and the constantly changing steering ratios are throwing me off.

How many miles do you guys have and what is your build date? Maybe there is a pattern?

The Cust. Support Manager of the managers was named "Chris."

In the emails they send, "Julianna" is the Cust Supp Manager, but she doesn't work there anymore and she reported to this guy named Chris.

  10. It sounds to me that Ford is utilizing the Edge to roll this brand new piece of technology out. Maybe even test the waters and see how people like it. Just how cutting edge this is(pardon the pun) is pretty amazing. The tech I spoke with at the time of delivery told me that they were told that the system is designed to revert to a standard steering system in the event of failure, but this thread proves otherwise. We will have to wait and see though as it could have been just an isolated run of bad parts. Ford owns the patents as this was their baby, but I believe it is manufactured and or also engineered by some German company. I guess we should sort of be flattered to see something like this that is normally reserved for higher end luxury cars, except I precisely stick with Fords because I don't like those luxury car repair bills. Some of those German cars in particular can bankrupt you after the warranty ends.

That is why everyone should post in this thread the miles they currently have or had at time of failure, build date, and where you live.

Everyone should report it to NHTSA for investigation!

  11. Has anyone received part replacement recently?

I am now at 4 and 1/2 weeks sitting in dealership.

Mine was in for 5 days, they replaced the Steering Wheel.

Only had it back for 1 day and had to take it back to the dealer the following day.

They replaced the Steering wheel with a different Part # than what was on the car originally. Was told that the Steering Wheel that includes the steering wheel control module was discontinued and super-seeded with a different part #.

Unfortunately the Adaptive Steering change from Normal to Sport no longer works. The car feels like it is stuck in Sport mode and it is very twitchy on the highway. Unacceptable. Now in another loaner.

Escalated to Ford Customer Care and the the Cust Supp Manager was extremely rude and arrogant. Offered no apology nor any compensation or comfort that the issue would be fixed.

  12.

It's standard on the 2016 Sports, if I'm not mistaken.

It is indeed and I love the Adaptive Steering. I'm used to driving sports/sporty cars and when I drove the Edge Sport with this mode ON, I loved it!

I just dropped it off today, so I'll wait to hear back from the dealer tomorrow with a diagnosis.

This is definitely a SAFETY issue, as my steering was all out of whack when the error was up. I can't imagine what would happen when going 70mph down the highway and the steering went wacky!?!

  13. I have 2200 miles on my 2016 Sport and just had the issue pop up today. Dropped it off to the dealer and the error went away, but it left 7 error codes behind. I also has the off center wheel with the error and extremely light steering.

What Part(s) are they replacing for you??

I too have an issue with the fault.

I have had the edge for 5 weeks, the dealer has had it for two and one half weeks waiting for the part.

Here too the dealer was concerned about safety issue id driven.

A small dealer but they had sold three vehicles with the adaptive steering and two have had the faulty part!

    Seems to be a problem!

Some acknowledgement from ford would be nice.

If they're replacing it under warranty then they're acknowledging the problem.
