  1. Does this problem effect all 2008 AWD edges? I just picked up an 08' limited last night....Do you think the late build 08's have updated ptu seals?

    Thanks

There doesn't seem to be any known fix for the stinking PTU problem. If you read all the post on the subject, you will see that some people had the seals changed, others had the PTU replace, others like me had the seals and the drive shaft replaced.

I think Ford is still in diagnostics mode which means they don't completely understand the whole problem therefore can't provide for a fix. Seems to me they are guessing at the fix by trying a variety of things.

Ford needs to state what the problem is and secondly what the fix is.

  2. Finally after 2 years of having burning smell in my car I have finally decided to join this forum and tell you my story.

Bought my Ford Edge March of 2007. I loved this car. December of 2007 started smelling the infamous burning smell. Took to the dealer replaced the seal after waiting 2 weeks to get my car back. March 2008 driving back from New Jersey to Pennsylvania after a vacation in Florida car smoking so bad that we could hardly see. I didnt know if we were going to make it home ok! We did and back to dealer where they replaced the PTU! January 9, 2009, leaking again. Dealer replaced PTU again! Pulled off the lot of the dealer and could have sworn that I smelled the burning smell. By now I know that smell all to well. Husband told me that maybe some fluid is still on the exhaust so maybe it needs to burn off. Have been smelling the burning smell off and on since that day. Friday, January 23rd driving to work stopped at light, what do i smell. It cant be, can it? Thought maybe it was in my head.........Went to lunch strong smell of burning. Going to the dealer tomorrow. What is different this time is i dont smell it all the time. Today out and about running errands and haven't smelled anything but getting it checked anyway.

Dealer thinks that maybe they didnt clean my car up and maybe some liquid has to burn off..........does that make sense. Told them I have had it. Although you do expect to have problems I think I have been more than patient.

Anyway, just wanted to tell my story.

If you have a Stinkin PTU Ford Edge story you would like to share with me I will post to my blog.

  3. Well the first problem is apparently fixed with a new PTU seal which was changed - remains to be seen.

However the other problem is attributed to a defective drive shaft that will be fixed under warranty next week.

If this is the end of my problems then the blog comes down, otherwise I will continue to report.

  4. My anxiety level is running high today. This is my first visit to the dealer and with less than 5,000 km on the odometer, I am hoping this doesn't turn into a on-going PU PTU problem.

Today I left my Ford Edge at the Dealer. There were two problems I identified to the mechanic.

    1) Smokin Problem - they said if it was red oil leaking then they have a new gasket. If it is brown oil then the gasket is on back order and they don't know when they can get it changed for me.

    2) Down Shifting Problem - when the weather is cold from about 80kph (50miles/hr) to about 30kph (20miles/hr) the vehicle is making a loud rumbling noise. I took the Mechanic for a drive and he made me drive and then shift into neutral and see if we heard the noise. Next I turned the vehicle off to see if we could hear the problem at the same speed, He said it could be a bearing in one of the wheels, but doesn't know. (I think it is related to the PTU problems others are having - we will see).

For problem 1, this is a simple job and I hope it fixes the smoking problem. Problem #2 is the reason I left the vehicle at the dealer today. The mechanic is going to disconnect the rear wheels and run the front wheels only to see if this identifies the problem. So it looks like I am going to have to wait to see what comes out of the second problem. I am thinking now what a Piece of Shit I paid $40,000 and I would like to talk directly to the Product Manager at Ford and tell him why he should not be proud of this vehicle.

  5. I'm yet another new victim of the dreaded PTU problem. I first had problems with 2200 miles on it. Hoping it was still a new car smell i waited untill my first oil change to bring up the problem. The dealer said everything looked fine and it was more than likely "packing oil" that was still working its way off of the engine components. I found that hard to beleive so i searched the problem on the website and found this! Thank goodness. I brought it back in, told them what to look at and got the replacemement seals put on (Kit# 8T4Z*7275*B), two days later I was was leaking even worst than before! Went back in and they said that it was "left over fluid from the replacement, as there is a place that fluid can collect that is hard to clean out." I again felt this was incorrect but i took their word for it. Two more days later and i was still finding fluid in the snow after short trips so i went in again and insisted the problem wasnt solved. This time they replaced the entire PTU with what they said was a completely redesigned part (Kit# 8T4Z*7275*A). I also noticed that this kit includes a shield that goes up and around the exhaust. I dont know if thats to keep heat of the PTU or keep the fluid off of the exhaust untill they can find a better fix! Its been 4 days and no problems yet, but i'm skeptical. Has anyone else received this replacement PTU? any luck with it if you have?

The growing FORD EDGE PU (pee-yew) PTU Problem.

I am not confident that they have a long term fix.

3 months after purchasing I am already making plans to dump after warranty is up.

  6. We got 2007 awd with only 7200 miles, going to pick it up tomorrow from the dealer. They replaced the seal. The service dept said they have not dealt with this problem much and it did not happen again on the cars that did. I just find it unsettling that this happens after it snows and is only noticed when the heat is on. So there may be people who driving without this fluid. Does anyone know how long the car can be driven before damage is made and what kind of damage will it cause? Anyway I'll be going upstate to ski next weak, will post again when back. ---- Thanx from Queens NY-------

This is what I am experiencing:

In addition to the burning smell, I feels like the transmission or transfer case is causing things to slow down between 50 and 30 mph. There is a loud muffled sound that coming from the vehicle at this speed. It concerns the hell out of me since even if they change the seals what damage has been done? I am starting to lose sleep over it now!

  7. I lodged a complaint to Ford Canada on Sunday and got a reply today. They did what I thought they would do - they pushed it back down to the dealer to address. I expressed my disappointment with Ford that at 4,000km I have such a problem, but they never acknowledged that they have a problem with Edge. However, they set up an appointment for me next week with the dealer and told me to expect to leave it there for 2-3 days. Seems like they took my word for it that it was the PTO seal.

We'll see if they can fix it?

  8. My '08 Edge is a few months old and has about 3,500km on it. It smells every time I park it, especially in a closed area like a garage. Obviously this hasn't been fixed from '07 to '08. I called the dealer and he has heard of the problem with Edges with 30k plus on them.

They will look at it when I take it in for my first oil change. I will also send a complaint into Ford.

I have looked under the vehicle and can't see anything and there is no sign of oil leaks on my garage floor. Can I expect this to get worse?

It is kind of embarrassing to explain to people why my brand new vehicle smell so bad.

  9. Well, even tho mine is an '07, I'm about to make ALL OF YOU feel REALLY good about your pricing!

    '07 AWD SEL Vista roof, class 2 hitch, LCD car starter;

    MSRP $43,000 CAN

    Purchase price $39,500 CAN

Given that the dollar is basically on par, I don't suggest ANYONE buy one here in Canada... :banghead:

Bet ya'll feel pretty good now eh?

I got mine (Black New '08 Limited) near Regina, SK for 36K.

  10. Oh, and I called the dealer to tell them that its leaking again. New PTU is going in next week sometime.

Why doesn't Ford monitor this Forum and come clean. God knows they need all the help they can get.

  11. I was wondering if anyone has tried out this hood lift kit and is it worth $100.

It seems like Ford left off a lot of little things that are starting to add up: bumper protector, tie down hooks, hood lift kit, under hood light, etc. Things that were standard on my old 1995 Eddie Bauer Explorer. Did they cut all this stuff out to save weight and money?

  12. I am getting a "Viper 5901 Responder LC3 SuperCode SST 2-Way Security and Remote Start System" installed in my 08 Edge Limited. There is no way I would try and tackle this myself. I have to wait until Jan 7 before I could get it installed. Considering it has been -30C here for the last week I want it now!

I am interested if some else has this model installed in an Edge and how it is working for them?

  13. Sorry to say it, but it's probably the PTU leaking.

Check under the car to make sure that you didn't get a plastic bag blown on to the exhaust pipe.

The "classic" PTU leak smell usually works like this; When you drive your car and stop at a traffic light, parking spot, etc..., it will start the smell usually when you stop. You will usually have a very distinct smell and probally some smoke / haze coming in to the cabin from under the car.

My Edge had the seals replaced and then the PTU last year. My car was one of the first and parts were not available so the process took over a month.

Now my Edge has started to smoke again this week and I have already made an appointment at the dealer. Just waiting for a loaner car to be available.

They said that since this has been a more common problem; the parts are more readily available, and the mechanic should be able to turn it over fast.

The only thing that keeps me from totally freaking out is that the 5 yr. 50k powertrain warranty will cover this after I go over the 36k mile mark soon.

    Good luck

And I could have bought an Acura RDX.

  14. I just purchased a new 2008 Ford Edge Limited and it has about 1,000 miles on it and I am getting a burning smell. This smell is like a wax like burning smell. No leaks yet.

Someone please say it is something else - catalytic converter or something else.

You guys have me scared after reading this.

    Say it ain't so.
