I've recently developed what im suspecting to be this issue. Lots of nasty sounds when rolling. When this occurred to my wife, she had called me & I had her call for tow & went to get her. I tried to straighten it up for the wrecker that was on the way and it would only roll in reverse about 5 feet before a loud bang & lock up, fwd all sorts of crunchiness sounds. The car HAD been making a slight sound when & after making turns, CV's appeared okay, they and wheel brngs had been done before. I took a chance & decided to change wheel brngs again & test drove after ea side...it seemed to sound better ea time and I was fairly certain I'd got it after both were done. Wife drove lil over a week before this catastrophic fail. Started looking to the rear, saw nothing obvious. The center carrier brng on driveshaft was beginning to tear so I replaced it after finding it CAN be replaced w/o having to replace driveshaft for under $100. While doing this I noticed how bad the lower torque mount (bottom tranny mount) was & replaced it also. It was trashed, but hadnt noticed it being so loose previously, so possible it had recently gave way. Then began research/search for whats really going on?? On stands I ran it w/no drive shaft to find the noise IS in front, was fearing transmission but now feel fairly certain it'll be in the PTU. Gonna repeat that stands test & use stethoscope this time before spending $900 more guessing.
Soooo, here's the kicker that'll surely surprise all. We have been planning to get her a new car recently & just hadnt got there yet. Ready for it...this is on a 2010 Ford Edge Sport that now has 230,000+ MILES!!! PTU has never been touched other than how close i got when replacing that lower mount & removing driveshaft!! We are its 2nd owner, but the orig owner was a friend when he first bought it. It had a water pump repl'd by us which was when I found and started having a great mechanic to do all my vehicle maintenance for 1st time in my life....(once I fig'd out where that pump was, sheesh). It's had some front end work; brngs, spindles, ball joints, tie rods, etc. type stuff, done (some repeat even), some issues with the sunroof track i still need to fix & then normal maint. But this is miraculously 1st time for that cooking time bomb thats been lurking. Its been showing signs of a bad CAT thru O2 faults for about last yr. Almost don't think I need to do any further testing to dicide its the PTU. Near hate to put a $900 part in it, but its still a really nice looking car, just with a ton of miles. It would near be painful seeing it be scrapped. I'll do the dorman myself with drain & shield & hope someone can get the good luck as we have with it...
After long story, is there easy way to verify seals properly installed when I get the repl Dorman PTU? I'm seeing some seals may be backwards causing leaks. Any other seals/parts I should look at while there (or replace) with this job. I'll try to post once done.
