Good evening. I recently purchased my 2013 Ford Edge and decided to make sure the MFT was up to date. Of course I didn't actually check the version that was installed (probably my mistake, maybe I didn't need to update?), but when I went to the owner.ford.com website and put in my VIN and then went to the SYNC update page, it showed the latest version available for download (3.10) and said I could update.
So I followed all directions to a "t", got a flash drive formatted properly and copied the necessary files onto it as directed. I plugged in the drive and it successfully started installation, loading the CAB files, but then suddenly I get an error saying there is a problem with the USB storage device, and I should take it out and try again. So I do. And it gets to the same step.
I found another post on some forum saying that they were able to get past this by deleting the source ZIP file so that only the three items (SyncMyRide folder containing CAB files, autoinstall.lst, and DONTINDX.MSA) are on the drive. I've tried this with no luck, though it seemed to be able to get further in the process before it failed. However, now it looks like I bricked my MFT.
Previously I was getting this message:
"Problem detected with USB Storage Device. Please contact SYNC support or try to download the update again. Remove the USB Storage Device to cancel this update."
This would only show until I unplug the device, and then go back to the home screen, where I could continue to use the MFT for climate, navigation, media, etc.
But somehow I seem to have messed it up further by trying multiple times. Now, when the USB isn't plugged in I get a message saying that it is waiting on the USB drive. I can't access the MFT home screen or any features including settings, it just shows that message. And if I plug in the USB, it says this slightly different message than before:
"Problem detected with USB Storage Device. Please contact SYNC support or try to download the update again. Then plug the USB Storage device with new update files into SYNC to continue upgrade."
Needless to say I have tried multiple things, including SYNC support who told me I'd need to take it into a ford servicing center. But I'd rather not go through the hassle and extra cost of taking it in when all I did was follow Ford's own instructions and use Ford's own software.
I am somewhat tech savvy and would prefer to fix this on my own if I can. Is there anything someone could suggest that I try next, short of taking it in for service? Is there a way to hard reset the MFT without having access to settings?
