I have had a similar issue for the past 6 weeks. It only ever happens if the frost warning symbol is on - therefore temp below 4c. The AWD still works perfectly and the display on the dashboard for the AWD indicates that it is OK. strange - could it possibly be a sensor not working properly? Have you resolved your similar problem since your post?
