  1. We've updated the results for the Edge to include owner experiences through September 30, 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2009: 71, about average, small sample size, unable to split FWD and AWD

2008 FWD: 45, about average, marginal sample size--actual repair rate probably lower

2008 AWD: 99, worse than average

2007 FWD: 23, better than average, marginal sample size

2007 AWD: 95, worse than average

The AWD continues to require more repairs owing to a common problem with the PTU seal.

A big thank you to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in February and May.

We've also introduced two new statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop. We don't have these for the Edge yet, though, because they require a larger number of responses. So if you aren't already participating, please consider doing so.

  2. Updated results again next month.

We're going to start providing new stats for the odds of requiring no repairs and the odds of getting a lemon. These require larger sample sizes, so additional participants would be helpful.

The AWDs are currently a few participants short of the minimum for these stats, while the FWDs are a couple short for the regular results.

  3. We've updated the results for the Edge to include owner experiences through June 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2008 FWD: 53, about average, marginal sample size--actual repair rate probably lower

2008 AWD: 99, worse than average

2007 FWD: 28, better than average

2007 AWD: 98, worse than average

The AWD continues to require more repairs owing to a common problem with the PTU seal.

A big thank you to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in November and February. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

  4. We have updated results for the Edge and MKX to include owner experiences through March 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2007 FWD: 17, better than average

2007 AWD: 99, worse than average, thanks to the PTU seal

2008 FWD: 60, about average, but marginal sample size; actual repair rate likely lower based on 2007 results

2008 AWD: 88, worse than average, PTU seal continues to be a problem area

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

  5. We have updated results for the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2007 FWD: 28, better than average

2007 AWD: 95, worse than average (PTU seal, as before)

2008: 28, identical to 2007 FWD and better than average.

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in May, August, and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years. We especially need more 2007s and 2009s.

We now have a separate results page for each model that includes the results for competitors. The page for the Ford Edge:

  6. Clad = plastic. But usually the wheel underneath is alloy, not steel. A few months ago I started distinguishing between "polished," "chrome," "chrome-clad," and "chrome-clad steel."

Chrome rims have their own durability issues. I suspect a major reason chrome clad is often used is to reduce warranty claims, believe it or not.

  7. I've seen no evidence of common SERIOUS transmission issues, and I have hundreds of these involved in TrueDelta's research. Many reflashes to improve driveability, but this isn't a serious issue.

The transmission hardware is the same as in the Edge.

Widely varying fuel economy is usually a matter of different conditions and faulty measurement. These vehicles won't be seeing mid-20s except under the most ideal conditions. They weigh nearly 5,000 pounds.

10 MPG is certainly possible in true city driving. Again, the curb weight.

You can view many reports on TrueDelta's detailed Fuel Economy Survey.

  8. Thanks, I appreciate it.

The latest results were recently posted. For the 2007, I reported results separately for the FWD and AWD. The former has a better than average repair rate. The AWD is much worse because of a single common repair, for a leaking PTU (which transfers power to the rear wheels).

I don't have enough 2008s to know if they also have this problem. Need more participants for both years, but especially for the 2008.

  9. The latest TrueDelta Vehicle Reliability Survey results have been posted. These are for the year ending December 31, 2007.

For the 2007 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, we received an average of 5.5 months of data on 54 cars. The stat of 69 successful repair trips per 100 vehicles per year (0.7 per vehicle) is about average for a 2007 model. Not as good as some other Fords, but not bad for a first-year design.

No result for the 2008 yet; need more participants for the current model year. We do already have results for some other 2008s, including the new Accord.

Everyone who has been helping out with this research, thank you. Those who aren't yet helping out, please consider doing so. With larger sample sizes we'd be able to provide additional detail.

  10. All manufacturers are going to have to get smarter with their built-in nav if they hope to compete with increasingly good and increasingly cheap portable units. Currently they charge a couple hundred dollars for an updated set of CDs. They're going to have to sort out a way to provide more frequent and less expensive updates, perhaps through a card slot so new info can be downloaded using a computer. This would also help the POI issue.
