  1. Good point, but this isn't a sales pitch as much as a public awareness post. Wait... "Buy one today!" Now it's a sales pitch.

And, if I was really trying to impress you, then I would take you out for a nice meal before driving you around in it. :shades:

A rose by any other name...

    Wow,

That's more than my diesel SuperDuty.

  3. Hi 500 h.o.. :D Living in "dry Arizona" would have no affect on what goes on in the A/C ducts, where condensation will build up and not dry out if a drain line is clogged or other problem exists (since it is dark and damp).

Given the proper (or improper) conditions, you could wind up with an odor problem if you lived in Death Valley.

Moisture/mold in the system is only one of several possibilities that can lead to an odor problem. And that moisture/mold can be caused by any of a series of problems/defects and in any environment (even Arizona).

However, since none of us can carry out a truly accurate diagnosis over the Internet, a trip to the Dealer for diagnosis and Warranty service would be in order for your car. If you have not already done so, make a service appointment and let your Warranty take care of the problem.

    Good luck. :beerchug:

I've owned a lot of cars in my long life (new and used) and this has never been an issue with any of them. This tells me it's a design issue. And I also never use forums as a diagnostic tool as most forum members do not have automotive engineering degrees and are just average Joe's like the rest of us. Most employees at the dealership also are undereducated when it comes time to diagnostics. I always take my vehicle to a personal mechanic that I trust to get an unbiased diagnosis and fair pricing. I own a 2008 6.4 diesel Superduty as well that has never seen the inside of a dealership and I don't plan on taking the Edge there unless it is for a warranty repair such as the stinky ventilation system. Although I appreciate your opinion, I take it with a grain of salt.

  4. Hi latintiger. :D Sorry, my reply must have been a bit confusing.

Let me try again. The "smell" is usually caused by residual moisture deep in the HVAC duct system. The ducts can become dark, wet places, and that can lead to a smell/mold condition. This can be caused by any of many vasriables, such as a clogged drainage tube in the system, leaves or other debris clogging the inlet grills by the cowl, etc etc. The clogged drain tube or other problems can cause residual moisture to collect in the system, causing a smell/mold problem.

Just because you park indoors and do not have leaves or other debris in in the cowl area does not eliminate the other possibilities.

One way to see if you have residual moisture in the system is to turn off the A/C and run the system on vent for several minutes before shutting off the car. This will help to dry up any residual moisture caused by A/C condensation. If this method does work, then it is likely a residual moisture problem causing the smell/mold condition.

Another is to use any of the A/C disinfectant and deodorant sprays that are available at auto parts stores. You follow the directions, usually spraying it in the cowl air inlet while running the HVAC system. The spray will then run through the duct work and helps to minimize the problem. But it is a temporary solution and will need to be periodically repeated.

In the end however (as you guessed), your best bet is to bring your car in for diagnosis and service, especially if it is still under Warranty. In this way, if there is a clogged drain tube or other HVAC system defect, it can be properly diagnosed and repaired.

    Let us know the outcome.

    Good luck. :beerchug:

Mine stunk from the day I bought it brand new and I've now got 3000 miles on it. I live in dry Arizona so that tells me it's something else.

  5. Just got my 09 Edge and we are loving it. Hopefully we will enjoy it for a very long time.

    Marty

The wife and I love ours. Very quiet and good on gas.

  6. WOW, that is totally abysmal!

How in the world do you get that terrible gas mileage? I used to get that with my '79 HighBoy 400 C.I. V8, 4wd with 35" mud tires and 410 ring/pinions fully loaded. My 08 AWD Limited Edge gets 19.5 worst case, and best so far with no trips over 20 miles is 22.5. These are calculated values not computer averages (although my computer is pretty close, give or take a mpg).

Do you live in NY or LA in bumper to bumper gridlock all day?

All depends on how heavy our foot is. Drive like an old man and numbers are good. Race around town and numbers are low.

  7. :shades: I had no idea how much I would love the Ford Edge. I previously drove an Expedition (loved it), but in our area that truck is just too big. Really, as a gadget geek, it would be hard to make me happier... the Sirius satellite radio, GPS Navigation, and "entertainment system" alone is enough to keep me busy for a while.

To tell the truth, I never even thought of an Edge before. I'd seen the commercials, but the small SUV never really jumped out and bit me. At the dealership, standing next to my husband with my arms folded across my chest, I was skeptical. Ford is pushing them hard, and that was my first obstacle. But after driving it and playing with the giant sun roof, my doubt melted away. it's going to be PERFECT for my family! Granted, I can't load 8 people in comfortably, but I can count the times I did that in my Expedition on three fingers.

It has all the luxury I've come to expect from a higher-end model, and the transition to the new vehicle has only had ONE little unsuspected side-effect: fewer stops at the gas station. Wow!

My husband isn't very happy with the huge, shiny chrome wheels (keeps saying they're "ghetto", but I don't think he understands the term), and I've found out that the gray color seems to show me EVERY speck of dust that clings to my brand new rolling gadget. Otherwise, I just can't wait to get back in my teensy little SUV.

:happy feet: Way to go, Ford!

    Congrats,

The wife & I like ours also.

  8. Hi everyone just thought I would stop by and check out the place. As the description says Wife and I just bought an Ice Blue Metalic 2008 edge limited and man what a wonderfull car/truck (lol still not sure what to call it)

We took it on a 1000 mile road trip over Memorial day weekend up the California coast and it ran teriffic. We are learning how to use the Sync system and the voice Nav system.

Plans are matching window tint for the front driver and passenger windpws and black monogramed floor mats ASAP so we don't destroy the camel ones.

Hope to get to know a few of you out there and hope you all have a great day.

    Dan

Yes, the camel mats get trashed within weeks. The wife and I are looking at the vinyl mats with the rim around it to keep all the little Arizona gravel off of the carpet.

  9. You should get a LOT of money for your 7.3 Those motors are legendary from what I have read.

Rumors have it that the 2011 EDGE will have a turbocharged, gasoline direct injection motor as an option.

Once your Super Duty is gone, you'll cry like a baby. They tend to be heirlooms.

  10. Synthetic won't matter for warranty issues. Just make sure you're using the correct viscosity, otherwise you will have warranty issues if there is engine failure and they perform an oil analysis. If you are doing the oil yourself, at the very minimum I'd keep all reciepts for your oil purchases and write the date of the change on your oil filter with a Sharpie. On a diesel forum I visit manufactures are trying to blame owner neglect on engine failures. So, Cover Your AS$!!

I own a 2008 Super Duty and belong to several forums and I'm constantly reading about warranty denials for one thing or another, oil being one of them along with emissions issues. Ford is a real humdinger when it comes to denying warranties. Personally, I'm waiting until my warranty is out before straying too far from stock. We can all offer all sorts of opinions and quote all kinds of legal precedents but when it comes right down to it, Ford has us by the cajones. It's "Who's right, who's wrong and who holds the warranty". Just my 2 cents.
