  1. All right, price going down before the face to face. Woo hoo! Make us proud. :)

Well, the car was great, love it, the copper metallic is gorgeous. The guy tells me there he "thought" I said 23000 not 22000 so anyway we settled on 22500 and I left a deposit. Sealing the deal tomorrow, I hope they don't try to tack on a bunch of stupid fees.

  2. Good luck, let us know how it goes. Print some pages from other dealers and wave them around while you are there, forgot to mention I did that too.

Yup I got them all printed out hehe. I talked to the guy on the phone today, he said he "might" agree to $22000. We'll see.

  3. Statistically women are the decision maker in over half of all vehicle purchases, and the sales guys know this, so let her be the one to look annoyed. I had all kinds of salesmen fawning over me. And they made the head mechanic go on one of my test drives to tell me about the Edge. Good luck, and I hope you get one, I love mine.

    Thanks for the advice!

  4. Usually Edmunds is right on. If you have a trade check on that too on Edmunds. But the dealer also needs to take the cash sale into consideration. No paperwork for them. In went in with a Capital One loan at a great rate and the dealer was actually able to get me better financing.

A simple tactic that I have used forever is to take someone with and whisper a lot and look annoyed. And when things are not going your way tell them you are going to go think about it, go to lunch or whatever. I bought mine last year and when I was not getting what I wanted I said that I was having a hard time letting go of my old truck and should think about it. Me gots what I wanted. :)

Well my wife is gonna come with me if we go to check it out, so I'll have someone to whisper to. The best part is we speak a second language so I don't even have to whisper, I'll just switch languages haha. I've got $18,000 in cash and I didn't want to go past that but it seems unlikely to me they'd go that low on it. I don't have a trade in, I sold my old car myself so I'd get more money.

  5. Sounds like a lot, did you work up the numbers on Edmunds?

Yup, I agree its a lot. I'm not agreeing to his latest price of $23,500. I'm in New England so prices are a bit higher here. Forgot to mention its an AWD model.

Edmunds says dealer retail of $24,956, private party of $23,089 trade in of $20,688.

  6. So I just entered negotiations on a ford edge for sale in my area. I'm doing this all via e-mail so I can't be a captive audience and so I have everything in "writing". List price was 24995, and I made an initial offer of 15000. Obviously a low ball offer, but i figure i have nothing to lose. The dealer countered with 23,500 and asked if I am going to finance. I don't want to take out a loan so I am buying with cash so I said nope. What do you guys think is a fair price for the car given the following information:

2008 Edge Limited, Copper Metallic Exterior, Camel Interior, 26,523 miles on it. Options include panoramic roof, leather seats, 6 disc changer, MS Sync, heated seats.

  7. I don't know if its possible with the Edge, but my dad busted the mirror on his Cadillac Seville. We got another one cheap off ebay, but it was the wrong color. I figured out I could just pop the mirror out of the old housing and replace the broken mirror (the housing itself was fine). So I'm wondering if you can do the same with the Edge. Just pop in the mirror with the blindspot insert in the current Edge housing.

  8. Thanks both of you for your helpful information in my quest to own an Edge! :)

Osiris, unfortunately, the car I'm looking at is only a FWD car, and not an AWD car. I'm not sure how much of a difference that makes in the overall price of the car, and if you think it's still a good deal or not on the vehicle. In regards the "Best Bang for Your Money" scneario, I would still prefer to get the SYNC inclusion for the vehicle. I am a technology nut at heart, and would love for my car to have more toys in it to play with, configure, and use! As such, I would probably prefer to take an '08 over an '07, just for the SYNC capabilities, so long as the price for the additional SYNC was comparable.

Okay, I ran the analysis of auction prices for the car as a FWD. Consider the following vehicles that sold at an auction in New England (prices are higher on average here):

2008 Edge SEL FWD, 7,900 miles sold at auction for $20,900

2008 Edge SEL FWD, 36,717 miles sold at auction for $15,932

2008 Edge SEL FWD, 85,326 miles, sold at auction for 11,600

The car you are looking at falls right about in the middle of those last two in terms of miles. That means the dealer probably paid 13k to 15k for it. That means you should offer them something like 13K for it and not go past 16k in my opinion. I know a lot of people are not comfortable with negotiating, and more importantly, the DEALER knows it, and will take you for all your worth if they can. You should completely ignore the sticker price.

That stinks that there's no way to tell from the pictures whether or not an Edge has SYNC or not, other than if it was a Limited, which would guarantee that it had SYNC. I was hoping there would be some buttons or something that I would be able to try to look for that would be a givaway that it had it in it. I'm currently located in Nowheresville, in the center of the United States. I would have hoped that would lower the price of the car that I was looking for, but it always seems like people get better deals elsewhere, than what people seem to get here in my area.

I've seen some ads that will indicate that the car has sync. You can use it as a keyword in cars.com or autotrader.com searches. I like the sync but I think I can accomplish the same things with an aftermarket system. For me the panoramic sunroof and AWD are the only must haves. I prefer leather interior in camel and exterior in the orange or red.

I would love to go into a dealership and offer a lowball offer. However, my biggest fear is that they would counter back that their car is already listed below KBB and NADA, and that it is a good deal. I understand that it may be higher, but by not knowing what the standard going price is for these cars, I lose any leverage that I would like to have with respect to that.

I guarantee you that they will counter that their car is below KBB and is already a good deal. It is a good deal for THEM. In fact I was looking at a car a few weeks ago and the salesman said that exact thing to me. I told him I never saw anyone sell a car for KBB, which is true. He had no response to that. He kept feeding me a line about how "Herb Chambers (the owner of about 45 dealerships in the area) personally prices every vehicle". I laughed extremely hard on the inside. Anyway, I just sold my Volvo and I did not get a single email or phone call until I priced it below KBB. Don't be afraid of the salesmen, you have EVERY advantage on your side. I'll list them for you if it helps :)

    - Automobile sales are down big time due to the economy. Advantage you.

-There are a ton of Edges around, as you found out for yourself. Advantage you.

    - There are a ton of competing cars in the same segment as the edge. Advantage you.

    - Ford and their dealers are trying very hard to win back market share from the Asian auto makers. Advantage you.

This is honestly a great time to be a car shopper. Just don't fall into the salesmen's tricks. And they have LOTS of tricks. I highly recommend reading this:

    http://www.edmunds.com/advice/buying/artic...62/page001.html

I will definitely be checking Carfax for any vehicle that I purchase, to make sure there have not been any problems reported on the vehicle. The last thing I want to do is run into another problem similar to the vehicle that I have now!

Just make sure you note how long the car has been with the dealer, too.

Igcitng, you think that the price listed is way too much for the Edge? I agree that 50K miles is a lot of miles. But, I don't mind, mileage-wise, as long as the price is reasonable for the mileage that is on the vehicle. My last two vehicles had 135K and 125K on them when I bought them! But, if $19,000 is too much for an '08 Edge with 50,000 miles on it, then I definitely want to continue my search elsewhere.

I'm butting in, but I agree with Igcitng, price is way overpriced. Just about any dealer listed car will be way overpriced. Not to belabor the point, but the sticker price is meaningless. I test drove a new edge about a month ago, sure it was a limited with all the options, but they listed it at $45,000. Really.

I filled out the information on Edmunds.com, and unless I did something wrong, the price was still similar to that of KBB and NADA. It had the price of the vehicle at around $19,500 with that milage. So does that mean the price is correct? I hope not, because I wouldn't mind spending less!

Sorry to butt in again, but no, the price on edmunds, kbb, or nada are not correct. Since these websites get revenue from advertisers (car dealers and manufacturers) they are going to be pricing vehicles in favor of the dealers and manufacturers. The real value of any car is what the consumer is willing to pay for it.

They have an '08 SE, 46,000 miles, for $17,000. While I agree that [hopefully] their cars are in better condition than that of another random dealership, their price is still roughly the same.

The SE models are sitting on lots because most buyers want an SEL or Limited. That is even more to your advantage. So that particular Edge, the dealer probably paid between 12k and 13k for it. I'd say you shouldn't pay more then 14k for it.

  9. Hi all!

So (obviously) I'm a new user to the forums. I'm currently driving around a 1999 Chrysler Sebring Convertible with 155K on it, and looking to upgrade to a newer, less maintenance-prone vehicle. I've loved my vehicle since I purchased it, but since then I've sunk about $7,000 in repairs and maintenance into a $4,000 car. I think the time's about up for me to purchase another vehicle!

I've been looking for over a year for a car to replace my current one with (yes, I am that afraid to pay money that it's taken me over a year to buy a car, lol). Initially I wanted to get a Charger to replace my Sebring. However, with rear-wheel drive, and all the snow we get, including the 2.5 feet we've gotten in the past two weeks, I decided it probably wasn't the best bet. I then moved on to look at getting a Grand Cherokee. However, with my Sebring bad luck, I'm a bit leery to go with another Dodge-based vehicle. I then came across the Edge while driving down the road, and it looked like a fun car. I got home, did some research, and it seems like it just may fit the bill for what I'm looking for. As an added bonus, my first car was a Mercury Sable, and I loved the thing to death. I certainly wouldn't mind going back to the Ford family!

My only problem, as stated, is spending money. I hate spending money, and I would rather do without a car payment :) Of course, that's not always possible, and certainly not a possibility for me. I'm getting married in just over 8 months, so I'd hate to go into it with too much debt on a car payment as well. So, adding it all together, I would like to ensure I get the best deal possible, and don't want to overspend and under-purchase.

I'm not looking to purchase a new one, as the cost of that is well over what I can afford. I'm looking more towards a 2008 or so, SEL package. I would like it to have the SYNC capabilities as well. The best deal I seem to have found online is this one:

    2008 Ford Edge SEL

    $18,988

    50,543 miles

First off, I don't know how to tell if the Edge has the SYNC package or not. Is there any way to tell? Is it only those that have the touch screen GPS navigation that has SYNC installed? Or do others with the standard radio and CD player have it as well? If its the latter, how can you tell if it has it or not, other than actually looking at the vehicle in person?

Second, I don't know at all if that is a good deal or not. According to KBB (and NADA too, I think), the rough price of that vehicle would be around $22,500. That seems like a lot to me, especially for a vehicle with 50,000 miles on it. However, I don't really have any idea as to the standard prices of these vehicles. Is it a good deal, and something I should really look at considering? Or is it way overpriced, and something that I could consider "low balling" the dealer on? If it's too high, what would be a good recommended price for the vehicle (assuming it hasn't been in an accident, there are no scratches, cigarette holes, etc in it)?

Thanks all for any advice you can give. I hope to be able to purchase one of these sometime in the near future. I'm ready to "grow up" and move on to a newer, more classy car for a full-time working college-grad like myself!

    Thanks!

Welcome to the forums. I'm in a similar boat as you. I recently sold my money pit Volvo S60 (I've sunk alot of money but probably not 7 grand into it), and I have about $18,000 to spend on a car. I do not want a loan either, and I applaud you for avoiding that scenario if possible. I have been researching the market and the ford edge for a couple of months now, and plan to buy one in January. Let me address your points as I see them:

    - For some reason I can not understand, I have found that consumer satisfaction ratings and those "best buy for your money" surveys tend to rank the 2007 edge higher than the 2008 one. I don't know why, but if the only reason you want an 08 is for the Sync, you might consider an 07 and save yourself some money.

    - You will not find Sync in 2007 models, the best way to know in 2008 is to just ask the seller. As far as I know, the Sync is standard in Limited models and an option in the others.

-KBB and nada both overprice cars in my opinion. I do not know anyone who ever sold a car for KBB value. My opinion is that they probably are "influenced" by dealer lobbies to overprice cars to inflate prices for dealerships.

    - Having said that, I estimate that the dealer selling the car you outlined paid about $16,500 for the car you are looking at auction or in trade/in value. I also assumed you are looking at an AWD model. I base this on recent dealer auction data I have collected and graphed, which allows me to estimate what the dealer paid for any Edge that I decide to look at. Keep in mind price varies with region of the country as well, and even within regions of a country. For example, if you go shop for a car in Craptown, USA, the prices are going to be lower because the local residents income will be less than those living in Shinyville. Anyway, always lowball a dealer, especially for a vehicle like the Ford Edge because inventories are huge on this car. Doing of used Edges in a 150 mile radius of me turns up about 700 vehicles for sale.

I'd say open up with an offer of $14000-$15,000 on the car. The dealer has much more experience at negotiating then you do, so don't worry about "offending" them with a low ball offer. Don't be one of those people who just buys a car for what its listed for, and be ready to walk away from any deal.

    Other things to consider:

    - If you do not need AWD where you live I highly recommend going with the FWD model. You will save you money and headaches. If you look at truedelta reliability data, the FWD models rank as pretty reliable while the AWD models have a known issue with the power transfer unit. This is a fixable issue though and if you get an AWD model I'd make sure there is some warranty left on it.

    - Make sure to pull a carfax report on the car. Not only will you determine if the car has any problems in its history, you can determine how long the dealer has had the car on his lot. Most dealers will send a car off to auction after 2-3 months on the lot, so if you find one that has been sitting around, you can get a better deal for it.

    - Having looked at the technical service bulletins on the edge, it generally seems better to buy one that is manufactured later in the cycle. This makes sense as you can consider the early models to be a "beta test" and later models will have some kinks worked out. So look at that plate that has the VIN number and manufacture date.

-I've also put together a checklist for buying a Ford Edge based on general problems you should look for in a car and also problems listed in the Edge technical services bulletins. I can post it here if you like later when I get home. Then, while your at the dealer, pull out the checklist and go through the car with a fine tooth comb in front of the salesman, this will make him nervous and make him think you are well-informed. I've done this before and watched salesmen sweat its lots of fun :) Then use whatever you find as leverage for bringing down the price further.

  10. I saw a brand new Lincoln MKT tonight at a local gas station in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

I have to say, the front end styling is very nice, but the back end looks like someone rearended a 97 Lincoln Mark VIII. It has the same body lines and taillight arrangement as a Mark VIII. The back end is quite a bit longer than what they current Edge/MKX has as well. Probably due to the fact that it actually has a functional 3rd row seat.

The Ford dealer near my house has one parked in front in the "showcase" spot. Can't say I'm a fan of the styling to be honest.

  11. Just my opinion, but for your $18K price range, I think you will need to get an older 07 or 08 with higher miles in order to get the options you want. You are probably looking at a typical Limited model, or maybe SEL that was optioned up. You will not get any dealer to switch out for leather seats on a used car. I agree you can add DVD and nav aftermarket if you find a car with leather and sunroof. Reverse sensors just beep when you you get close to something.

I already had a dealer offer to switch out for leather seats. For nav, I decided I'd much rather spend 2000 dollars on this then the stock nav:

    http://signature.crutchfield.com/s_113DNX9...ation&ssi=0

I'm okay with higher miles, here are a couple that match my criteria, I've found a few that match my criteria with 30,000 miles on them. I generally assume if something is listed for $20k-$22 I'll be able to get it for $18k. I'm also thinking once we get into 2010 some prices will drop.

  12. First sight on the Venza and I thought it looked great--- I had a Toyota Sienna and hated the damn thing because there was no way for me to get comfortable on a long trip. The seats were very uncomfortable in comparison with my old Windstar.

I did test drive the Venza and found it to be just as uncomfortable as the Sienna. The window ledge is too high, the door arm rest is too low, the center arm rest is a joke as is what they call a tilt & telescope steering wheel.

I also looked at the Edge at the same auto show and after sitting in it for a couple of minutes, had to go drive it at a dealer. At the time I wasn't ready to trade, but I always plan a year or so ahead--- The Edge was very comfortable. Everything was the right height and in the right place and the price was a little easier to swallow. My last concern was how the dealer treated me--- The Toyota dealer was excellent--- but, after talking to the Ford dealer, so are they now!

The only feature I liked better in the Toyota was the cruise control switches, but the Ford's are livable---

I am currently shopping for a new crossover and the Venza was the first one I looked at. I think it looks great, and I test drove it twice. The first time was fine, but the second time I started to see some problems:

    - Noisy Interior

    -Closed in feeling inside

-That sculpted rear quarter also leads to huge blindspot issues

So, considering the price and the fact that its a first year car, I've crossed it off my list. The edge is still on my list. I was pleasantly surprised by it when I drove it. I do think it is selling pretty well, you will see dealers (atleast in my area) never offer any serious incentives, and most dealers i talked to say it is selling well.

  13. Okay so lets say I've chosen the Ford Edge over the other two. I am on a tight budget, so I need to keep it at $18k or so. Now lets talk about options, these are what I like and what I think:

Leather seats: nearly a must-have for me. I know some dealers will replace cloth for leather for you.

Panoramic roof: nearly a must have as well. I'd never do this aftermarket.

DVD system: nice to have, but not critical, and can get it cheaper after market.

Nav system: also nice to have, but can get it cheaper aftermarket I assume.

Sync: I think its critical to have a hands free phone setup. Does Sync come in the 2007 models? Are there phone controls on the steering wheel?

Reverse Sensing System: What is this? blindspot sensor?

What options do you consider important, and which do you consider to be a waste of money or overpriced(with less expensive/better after market options available)?

  14. MDX-Boring

    RX 330-More BORING

If I had all of the money the world I would not buy either. The Lexus has been around so long with no exciting changes and everyone has one. And it comes in like two colors, tan and a different tan, or black.

My Edge is pretty basic, I spent the $$ on the AWD and the shiny wheels, but I test drove a Limited and loved it. I love how it looks, it is pretty fast and the cargo space is outrageous. I put doors in it, a tree, bunches of large dog crates for a trip, all kinds of stuff and it never fills up! And the auto liftgate is the best thing since sliced bread.

I agree that the MDX and RX are boring when it comes to styling. Those two choices are more about reliability. Having owned a 2001 Volvo S60 (Ford owns volvo, but I don't know how many Ford parts are in it), I can tell you I have suffered from that vehicle. I have had to take it at least twice a year to for repair since the warranty expired.

Now, is the auto liftgate in the 2007 models as well?

a couple of things to think about, check the insurance rates on all 3. I don't know the rates of the MDX or RX330 but I found the Edge had a good rate (I went from a 07 MKZ to a 09 Edge Sport and my rates went down by a few dollars instead of being higher for the newer vehicle) . You will most likely spend more money on repairs on the MDX or RX330 as parts are not cheap on those vehicles and there service departments may have higher labor rates than a Ford Dealer (if you use dealers for repairs)

Good point on cost of repair. I did exactly as you mentioned, and the insurance cost didn't differ much. Here is how my annual rate would change if I replaced my volvo s60 with each of those vehicles:

    MDX: $19 less/year

    RX330: $38 less/year

    07 Edge: $7 more/year

    08 Edge: $42 less/year

I would not worry about the PTU, problem has been solved and if you get 08, 09 it will come with good warranty as well.

Seems like the jury is out on this. Will Ford do a recall to fix the AWD issues? I don't want to get stuck paying for that its going to cost $$$$.

Brother is a Sr master Tech for ford and like Sparky said ford has fixed the PTU problem if I remember what my brother said the original seal designe would leak and so they have a redesigned one.

As for comparisons I will take the Edge over any of the others hands down. Another thing to consider is ask yourself if you really need AWD you may live in a cold climate with masive snowfall but if you don't get a lot of snow the FWD would prob work well with good tires and it will save you money.

Has this fix been subject of recall? How will I know if it is fixed in the actual vehicle I am looking to purchase? Also, I absolutely need AWD, I live in New England and one of the regions of MA that receive more snow then most of the other areas.

I have an MKX but since the edge and MKX are built from the same platform I can say I would take the edge hands down. The ride quality, space, pricing, looks, and functionality can't be beat.

Well it sounds like everyone is happy with their Edge so far. Good to hear.

  15. Hi,

I'd like to get opinions on the 3 vehicles I am considering for purchase, one of which is an Edge. For my price range, I can afford a 2004-2006 MDX or RX330 with somewhere between 30k and 70k miles on it. For the Edge I can afford an 2007-2008 with 20k+ miles on it. Heres what I like and don't like about each one:

    MDX:

-I like reliability, 7 seats, the interior comfort, and cargo space. I found the ride to be pretty decent.

    - I don't love the exterior appearance, and it seems access to the third row is tighter than in other 7 seaters i have tried.

    RX330

    - I like the reliability, interior design and comfort, the voice controlled GPS, and the MPG.

    - I dont like the exterior looks or color selection. 5 seats is okay but obviously I can't get that in this vehicle.

    Edge

    - I like the design, both interior and exterior, the color selections, vista sunroof. I like the price vis-a-vis the other two vehicles as I can get this one newer and with fewer miles than the other two.

-I don't like the reliability in comparison with the other two models. I have serious concerns about the reliability of the AWD models based on the truedelta.com reports. Would love to get more details on this issue if people have them.

Is there anything else I should consider about these 3 cars? What are folks opinions?
