Steering noise when cold

Recommended Posts

2010 Edge SEL.  When the car is cold, I get a clunking noise and a feeling in the steering wheel when turned slightly back and forth. There is no noise with the engine off. Just to make things more interesting, after the engine is warm, any problem goes away. I jacked the car onto stands and checked the components and all looks and feels fine. No looseness.

I installed a rebuilt rack & pinion in June 2025. It's been fine until 2 weeks ago. March 2026. My guess is that the hydraulic valve in the rack may be sticking, and after the fluid heats up, the valve loosens and works normally.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
