  1. I'm assuming that your joking when implying those issues are the result of incompatibility between Microsoft and Apple. If your not, then lets just say your not well informed. I don't know that the buggy MyTouch system make a good Lemon Law case, but it's bad enough that I'm at least looking at other vehicles that I can make a lateral transition to. The main reason I purchased the Edge was because of the technology (specifically the MyTouch system and the next generation navigation system) and the biggest frustrations are Someone posted a link to an excellent post on MyTouch from www.autoblog.com. It gave some great insight as to some of the inerworkings of the software. The most useful thing, I thought, was the fact that MyTouch does an automatic reboot after 24 hours of usage (it does this when the vehicle is turned off) This explains why some of the issues seem to go away after a day (though not why they happen in the first place) I think the bottom line is that each time I turn on my Edge, I have little confidence that everything is going to work. I've already just stopped using the navigation system because it's just too slow in tracking my position and it's painful to try and enter a POI. I avoid using a USB connected device because I think the resources consumed when the Edge reindexes the device puts the system in a very fragile state. Even after that babying of the system, I still have issues where the bluetooth suddenly loses the ability to connect to a phone or pair to a new phone. That only lasted for a day (thanks to the nightly system reboot) but it's something that can pop up any time and is not isolated to a brand of phone. I'm sure software upgrades will improve performance, but Ford is doing a crappy job of letting owners know that new version are available (I found out that v2.7 was available through this forum), letting owners know what each upgrade is intended to fix. Also, it seems like each time you take in your vehicle to the dealer to get an upgrade done, it's 50/50 that you'll be leaving with a fully functioning vehicle. As frustrated as I am, I truly feel for those early adopters that had to do fuse pulls on a regular basis and had their cars in the shop for weeks because the techs botched a MyTouch update....you guys are the ones that truly deserve to have a solid working MyTouch ! I have no interest in spending more on a car than I already have, but if I can trade in the Edge for something that has most of the tech I want, is much more stable and reliable, and costs less than what my Edge is worth (according to Kelly Blue Book) then I'm crazy not to consider it. I had thought the Edge was one of the best vehicles I've owned and I certainly won't go as far as saying that the car is a nitemare. I'm looking at a Volkswagen Tiguon and if that doesn't work out, I'll live with the Edge and hope for the best from newer MyTouch versions. However, I wouldn't recommend the Edge to anyone now.
  2. Thanks for posting that article ! I think that more you use MyTouch, the more likely you'll run into a problem. If you don't have navigation and don't use the USB interface, then it's pretty likely that the only issues you'll see is some lag. The more you tax the MyTouch system, the more likely you'll put the software into a bad state which will cause the system to reboot. The article references v2.7 coming out soon: "The latest software level, launched in the new 2012 Focus with MyFord Touch, features an update that significantly minimizes the chance of maintenance reboots. That same improvement is being applied to the 2011 Ford Edge, Explorer, and Lincoln MKX models beginning with early April production, and will also be available for current owners from their local Ford and Lincoln dealer as a SYNC software update. " Hopefully that release does, finally, stabilize MyTouch (so they can focus on performance improvements) Regarding the details of the article, I have to agree with Ford that automated reboots of the systems, while not ideal, is the best solution. When the software is in a whacked out state, the best thing is a clean restart. I'm assuming that the reboots were actually a feature of a software upgrade because the alternative would be to have to pull a fuse or stop and start the vehicle to force a reboot (neither of which are possible when your driving). The problem with rebooting is the following: 1) It takes a few minutes to restart 2) Depending upon what's going on when the system reboots, the reboot could be more than a minor inconvenience (specifically if your in the middle of being guided by the navigation system) I've put this in other posts, but I'm optimistic that the MyTouch system will become stable. The system is way too important for Ford to ignore issues. Also, a car is not like a cellphone, which can be considered a disposable consumer device, so I'm not too concerned that Ford will fix issues going forward and not offer software updates to older vehicles. I do think that hardware running MyTouch may be underpowered so there will always be some lag (that is something that Ford could improve going forward and prob. would not offer hardware upgrades to older vehicles) . However, I'd hate to jump to any conclusions on the hardware until Ford optimizes the software to work with the existing hardware. I had 2 system reboots in 1 week and no reboots either before or after. I'm finding the overall performance of MyTouch acceptable at the best of times and frustrating to use alot of the time. The navigation system is absolutely horrible. It looks great, traffic is very accurate, but the overall system lag is pretty evident in how slow the position tracking is and how cumbersome it is to enter a destination. Also, the POI database is not good.
  3. This is one of the very few tech features on the Edge that works very well. The BIS indicator is unobtusive but it has become habit to check for the light in my side mirrors before changing lanes. It does give some false positives when there is a median or barrier on t he shoulder, but it has worked perfectly for detecting cars in blind spots. Likewise, the cross traffic alert works vey well. I've found it very useful for backing out of parking spaces
  4. First of all, renting the Edge was an excellent idea that I think I'll do when car shopping in the future ! You managed to discover the bulk of the MyTouch bugs that were just not evident to me in a test drive (or in reading reviews outside of this user forum) I've had the same issues with the USB and the main touch screen rebooting and I purchased my Edge about 4 weeks ago and I confirmed that it has the most recent version of MyTouch (2.4, I believe) i have to say that the issues with MyTouch are becoming a source of frustration. In my opinion, there will always be a lag with MyTouch. Software updates will hopefully stabilize the system so it doesn't reboot, but I think there is a hardware limitation can't be resolved with software fixes. That being said, I have not found the usual lag to be a huge issue. If they keep the system from rebooting and from hanging then I think it becomes one of the best car system on the market. My concern is that Ford/Microsoft has already put out a few updates and there are still stability issues. So, I'm wondering how long it will take Ford/Microsoft to provide a truly stable system. FYI... I have noticed that most of my problems come from using my iPhone as a USB device. The system attempts to reindex the iPhone every time it connects and that causes the entire system to hang (though it doesn't hang every time it reindexes). If I had to guess, the reindexing is a pretty resource intensive task and once available memory and cpu are low the whole MyTouch system becomes unstable.
  5. I accidentally turned on the emergency flasher the first day I owned the car and have not done it since. I have to say that I've never accidentally turned on the emergency flashers in ANY other car that I've owned so I certainly agree that it's not well placed. That being said, I can't say that I find it to be an issue for me. For awhile, I had to be a little more careful/conscious about not hitting it when I used the touch screen, but it soon became second nature to avoid it.
  6. I agree with Edgieguy.... the navi is slow. I've found it to be 2 -3 seconds behind. If your driving in a city where your route may have multiple turns interspersed together, you need to pay close attention to make sure you don't miss a turn; you can't rely upon the voice prompts. Also it can take a long time to calculate/recalculate a route. Being able to have your next turn displayed on smaller screen to the right of the speedometer is very handy, I've also noticed that the live traffic is hot or miss. By that, I mean that most of the time I get live traffic, but sometimes there's nothing. I don't know if this is an issue with Sirius or with MyTouch (my guess is that it's MyTouch) The POI database is a little quirky as well. It has a fairly new restaurant close to my home, but it doesn't have a local Best Buy that has been around for a few years. The voice commands are great for selecting a destination and having the ability to send a destination from Google Maps to the car s very cool. Both those are necessary since there is lag in typing in a destination. I also like the various route view modes Overall, the navi is adequate...but barely. The overall lag in the system is bad and makes it tough to trust. On the plus side, it looks fantastic and has some very nice viewing options. :Like the rest of the MyTouch system, it could be fantastic but just suffers from poor performance
  7. I think that mechanically, the 2011 is pretty reliable. I've had my AWD Limited Edge for 4 weeks (2500 miles) with 0 mechanical issues other than a slight pull to the right.. The MyTouch system is another story. It's laggy, has been crashing and rebooting one or two times a week for the past 2 weeks. I think that plugging a USB device (at least my iPhone 4) has the potential of crashing or bringing the system to a grinding halt when it reindexes the device. However, I've had it reboot randomly. Also, the navigation system is not very good at all. It looks great, but the interface is very laggy and I've found that it's about 2 - 3 seconds slow. This may not be a big deal with going down a highway, but using it to navigate through city streets (or any route that requires quick turns) can be a challenge. The MyTouch system has the potential to be revolutionary, but it's half baked (even after multiple updates) I think that, eventually, it will stabilize but it will always be a little slow
  8. When the MyTouch system is working, it's the best car infotainment system hands down. However, I've had my 2011 EDGE Limited for about 1 month. The MyTouch system has been sluggish and flakey from day 1, but I was still very impressed by it. It seemed like the updated done my Ford/Microsoft had stabilized the MyTouch system. In the last week, the MyTouch system has crashed and rebooted twice. While I'm pleased that I didn't have to pull a fuse to reboot the system, the fact that the system has crashed multiple times in a single week is very disconcerting to me. I'm willing to deal with the flakiness and lag while the software is optimized, but if I keep getting multiple crashes per week, I'll take the financial hit and trade in the Edge. So, be aware that the MyTouch system, while very, very cool, is also very, very buggy. Don't just rely upon professional website/magazine reviews (none of which mentioned just how unstable the MyTouch software is), make sure you check this forum so you can get a true feel of the current state of MyTouch. Unfortunately, I didn't stumble upon this site until after I purchased my Edge. Had I read the posts regarding the MyTouch issues, I may have still purchased the Edge, but it would have definitely given me pause. I will say that, outside of the MyTouch issues, the Edge is a great crossover SUV. However, the biggest factor that pushed me towards the Edge was the MyTouch system, so I'd be lying if I didn't say that I'm pretty disappointed with my purchase. Good luck in your choice !
  9. Thanks for the input ! It's good to hear that the Gen2 (v2.4) has stabilized the system for the most part. As I mentioned in my original post, I have no problem with glitches and lag, I do have a problem with a unstable system that reboots consistently and requires a fuse pull to get back working. To date, the biggest issue has been that I got a Navigation Fault message on on right side screen once while the navigation system was loading up (and the volume was set to the max level as well) Though getting blasted by the loud radio was not enjoyable, I don't consider either issue more than a minor annoyance (since the navigation system booted up and the error on the right touchscreen went away)a The lag throughout the menus is pretty bad, but the only time it becomes annoying is when entering in destinations for the navigation system (that's the only time I need to type more than a few letters so the lag is more noticeable) Given that I can enter destinations vi voice commands or through Google and have them sent to the car, I can live with that lag. I do think that the lag is more software related, rather than a hardware limitation. An example would be for iPhone 3G users who upgraded to the iPhone 4 software. When the software first came out it was almost unusable on the 3G but became much better to use as software upgrades came out. I don't know that the MYTouch system will ever be zippy but my guess is that the lag will be reduces by further upgrades Once again, thanks for the input. It will take a month or two of being relatively problem free before I feel confident in the stability of the system, but this does ease my mind a bit !
  10. I've had good luck with my iPhone4. Given that, I would expect the same results from an iTouch
  11. Hello, I just picked up my 2011 Edge Limited AWD vehicle 5 days ago. I did a fair amount of research and choose the Edge over a Lexus RX350 and Subaru Outback. I was thrilled with my purchase, and then I ran across a post regarding the Sync/MyTouch issues. That post led me to a ton of posts across multiple message boards that led me to be very concerned about the stability of the Sync/MySunc software My experiences in the week I've had the Edge is that the system is definitely laggy and a little flakey. That being said, I don't consider any of the issues I've had with Sync anything other than minor annoyances that don't detract from the excellent user experience I've found with Sync. That being said, I'm trying to baby the system a bit in order to not do any sequence of events that have caused issues (based upon the feedback of users in this forum) I'd really love to get some insight on how stable the current state of Sync on the 2011 Edge is ?. It seems like there have been a few updates (I'm at Gen2, v2.4) that have provided a fair amount of stability as long as the dealer does the install correctly. I've definitely got an issue with the vehicle pulling to the right. It's not what I'd consider a huge deal, but it's something that needs to be fixed by the dealer. The deal breaker for me will be if Sync proves to be unstable. I've got a fairly high level of tolerance for Sync issues as I'm a software developer and I understand that new software has bugs. I don't want to give Ford a pass because they clearly released half baked software that should have been stable by the time it hit the Edge. However, it seems as though Ford has been pretty aggressive in releasing new versions. I do think that there may always be some lag, but I absolutely think there's no reason why Ford can't work out the bugs and release a rock solid Sync/MySync system. My big fear is that I'm stuck having to pull fuse 29 on a regular basis to reboot the system or that Sync just bombs out for no apparent reason and it's stuck at the dealer for several days while the dealer struggles to figure out how to correct the issues. Right now, the Edge is just about the best vehicle I've ever owned. Alignment issues aside, the ride is great, the vehicle handles extremely well and the technology is useful. That being said, if the Sync system proves to be wildly unstable, I won't be an Edge owner for long. I appreciate any advice/input I can get and I look forward to being able to, one day, being able to contribute to this very useful forum !
