  1. Get a power port usb thing and then use bluetooth to the car.

The iPads are designed so that they won't actually charge off a USB port unless the cover is closed or the screen is blank. They need to have a power source with enough current capacity (typically an AC adapter). I just plugged my iPad into a 12v to USB adapter and it's not charging but like I said, if you shut the screen off, it will actually start to charge up.

I also had no issue with playing audio off of it through the USB or Bluetooth connection so I'm not sure what Ford's talking about in the press release.

  2. Because they couldn't possibly just be advertising Sync, right? Why would they include an error in a commercial?

    Give it a rest please.

    Geez, lighten up.

It's just product placement but maybe it's a little bit funny that the screen they decide to use is one that if a user is not having any problems, they're not likely to ever see. If you are having problems, then you see it all too often.

  3. With the MFT re-write hopefully coming out in a couple of months, there seems to be a fair bit of discussion about whether or not people are actually satisfied with any of the Gen2 versions of MFT (v2.4 - v2.11).

While I think the rest of the car is great, and even though I haven't had any major MFT issues, I still have to deal with the laggy response, spotty blue-tooth operation and rudimentary navigation system on a regular basis.

Anyone care to step forward and say that they're completely (or even mostly) satisfied with how MFT is working for them?

  4. From Ford:

How do you know that these issues won't happen again? We are confident in our testing process.

    Based on what? Past experience?

If they were just as confident in the past and still released the software, then they can't really say that they understand what a testing process is supposed to do.

If they weren't confident about the testing process, and they released the software anyway knowing how flawed it was, then a public apology would be a great place to start (not that it's likely to occur).

To be honest, the subject of that thread is "Is anyone satisfied with their Edge?", which is a bit different than being focused on whether or not they're satisfied with MFT. If that's the only example you can come up with, I'd say that it's far outweighed by the number of threads on this forum that are related to MFT issues. Based on that alone, I'd say that the majority of people are frustrated and dissatisfied with MFT.

Personally, I really like my Edge. It's just the type of car I wanted to get and I'm happy with what I paid for it. I just happen to agree with JeffIsHereToo that they should be ashamed of the product and admit to it instead of marketing the new release as though they only want to continually improve the product out of good will. That kind of spin in a press release may work with the media and with anyone who hasn't actually used it on a day to day basis, but for those of us that have, it's insulting.

    </soapbox>

  6. Gary Jablonski you and your team should be ashamed of this thing!

<<in the interest of brevity, snip>>

    Thanks Gary!

I couldn't agree more that from a product delivery standpoint, they should be ashamed of what they've foisted on the public. Every time I see a Ford ad on TV that's highlighting how great MFT is, I want to scream (actually, I usually do scream) "THAT"S NOT WHAT IT"S LIKE AT ALL!"

I've spent 35 years in IT infrastructure and have purchased lots of bleeding edge and beta software, but at least I knew what the risks were when I deployed it. With MFT, I haven't had the number of issues that some people have experienced, and I've learned to live with its idiosyncrasies in my 2011 Sport, but I really feel sorry for the people that may not have the technical insight into what's happening behind the scenes and are even more frustrated with it than I am.

Best thing I ever did was install an On/Off switch inline with fuse 29 so I could reboot the system when I wanted to (even driving down the road).

  7. I been driving my new 2011 Edge SEL for three weeks now. I'm still getting used to a lot of the features and amenities. One thing that I've noticed is the audio quality. It sounds like it playing underwater. The music sounds muffled. This happens both on FM radio and Sirius. Anyone else have this problem as well? Thoughts on how to improve audio sound quality?

Best place to start is with swapping out the speakers in the doors with a decent set as they are about as cheap a speaker as you can get.

I replaced mine with Polk MM571's and there was a noticeable improvement in the sound quality. Once you do that, you can start to consider amps, equalizers, or more.

  8. I've had my 2012 for a week and a half without any problems until today. I may have created it myself tho.

I started it and put it in reverse before it got booted up and the MFT screen went berserk. Locked up,nothing worked on it and the clock stayed at the time that I started the car for almost an hour. Sometimes it lost a couple of minutes, bluetooth wouldn't connect, nav system wouldn't work and the screen would periodically shut off.

After driving it for about 40 minutes I got a message for an SD card fault. When I got to my destination, I shut the car down, pulled the SD card and put it back in and prepared to call the dealer's service dept. When I restarted the car, all was well. Poltergeists?

OK, went out to pick up supper and the screen was blank again. Few minutes into the drive the "SYNC" screen came up and said it was performing maintenance. After it did that, was OK. WTH?

I'd consider that pretty normal operation (as bad as it is). The way the system is currently written, it seems to have a problem with dealing with too many interrupts at once so when it gets busy, it tends to exhibit unexpected behavior. Unlike earlier versions, it's also designed to detect this and at the first opportunity, reboot, which is what you're seeing when the "Scheduled Maintenance" screen comes up.

Until the full re-write comes out int the spring (keep your fingers crossed) you'll have to learn to live with it.

  9. 39 views, and not one comment?! Your gonna hurt my feelings here guys and gals....

    Cannon ;)

I wasn't sure about the whole matte black look until just the other day I saw a Nissan 350Z on the street and now I get what you're trying to achieve.

if it's done right (and I think you've nailed it). it looks great.

Congrats, it's a great overall look.

  10. 20.8 MPG average with the 3.7 Sport..... pretty much all highway miles . Is anybody getting anything better so far? 4800 on the odometer and shes about to get her first free oil change. I called the dealer and they said there is actually no "break-in" period for the new motors. He continued by telling me that i could regularly change the oil at every 7000 miles if i used fully synthetic. Almost to 5K and shes starting to sound more "throatier" B)

With 10K miles on the motor, I'm getting 23 - 24 MPG at 60 MPH. On a recent road trip to Montana, I was pushing it pretty hard on those wide open Interstates and the mileage definitely dropped to around 19 - 20 MPG. The sweet spot sure seems to be around 55 - 60 MPH for the best mileage.

As far as the oil changes go, I'm less inclined to believe any dealer and only change the oil when the system says to. My first oil change was right around 10K miles.

  11. Seems to be a common issue without the harness. Ford uses a pulsed voltage so it can cause issues with some ballasts so if you use a harness that pulls power direct from battery and only uses the headlight connector to turn power on/off you should be OK.

To anyone that has added HIDs...can you buy the rear covers as a separate part? Just from a quick look at things it looks like you need to drill and access hole in the covers to get the HIDs installed. I would like to have an extra set of covers.

I tried to order an extra set of covers when I installed my HID kit and when they arrived, the parts guy got a funny look on his face and said that they were showing a cost of $0. To me that means they're free, but to him, that meant that he had to find a valid price. So far, that's taken more than 3 month's without an answer.

I think I'm resigned to the fact that if I ever switch back to the original bulbs, I'll just cut out the wiring, leave the grommet in place and not worry about it.

  12.

Back to Wilsons66604 finding...just wish you didn't have to restart the car. Would really like some fix that you can do while motoring down the highway. Or can you continue and let it do its thing and eventually it reboots is back to normal just that you are driving for a minute or so without the MFT functioning? Is there a requirement to shut off and restart?

What I did was install a switch inline with the power circuit to the APIM and then mounted it behind the glove box door so that it's hidden except for when it starts to misbehave and you just lean over, open the glove box, and power it off and then back on. Doesn't matter if the vehicle is in motion or not.

It works great and it's so satisfying to feel like you have control over it, rather than the other way around.

  13. Thanks....if it is just a simple relay that looks at the headlights to get power before powering the ballasts then any of the aftermarket harnesses should be fine...I just wasn't sure if they had something magical in there to deal with the pulsed signal.

The only additional component in the harness is a capacitor to filter out any pulses in the signal. I believe that most aftermarket kits have that as well since it's a generic problem.

  14. Well that is why I am hesitant to go with the full retro kit since I have heard mixed reviews...seems like either people love them or hate them. To be honest that is the case for all HID sellers but when their price is 4x's what I paid for my DDM kit I would be far less tolerant of some hiccups. I know at least one other person here has installed the DDM kit but was hoping someone knew what was so special about the harness on the Retro solutions kit if anything.

I have the Retro-Solutions kit on my 2011 Sport which has been working great for 4 months now. As far as the harness is concerned, rather than drawing power directly through the OEM wiring, the harness connects into the existing headlight circuit which then fires a 12V relay to turn on the ballasts using a fused connection to the battery. The wiring in the harness is fairly heavy gauge so there isn't any issue with over heating, fried connectors, etc.

So nothing really "special" with the harness that you couldn't recreate yourself with a handful of parts and a crimp tool but in my opinion, it's a solution that works well for the price.

  15. I use the keypad everyday. Never carry the fob on me. Instead I leave it in the car, lock it with the keypad and then when I come back just open the door with the keypad and then push the start button then off I go. Feel good knowing that the car will not start unless I enter the code. I leave the fob in the car everyday. Embrace the keypad...

That's exactly how I use it as well.

"Embrace the keypad"...my new tagline. biggrin.gif

  16. OK, I followed the re-initializing instructions to the letter and it still requires me to hold the button to get it to close the last 6 inches. Did I read this wrong? I though that the process was supposed to eliminate the need for doing that?

You will always need to hold the button for the last 6 inches of travel. It's a "safety" feature which is odd since there are videos on Ford's website showing how awesome the obstruction detection is in the sun roof mechanism.

If, for some reason, the mechanism loses track of where the home position is, you'll need to hold the switch constantly to open or close it to any degree. The re-initialization procedure establishes when the home position is again and from that point on, it can fully open with a single press of the switch and close up to the 6 inch point with a single press of the switch.

  17. I was lead to believe that nitrogen keeps a more constant pressure and does not fluctuate tire pressures in heat or cold as air does.

Studies have shown that tire pressure remains more consistent with nitrogen since the oxygen and water vapor in compressed air are absorbed or transmitted at a faster rate through the sidewall than the nitrogen (oxygen 4 times faster, water vapor 10 times faster). Left unchecked, an under-inflated tire has more rolling resistance and consequently lower gas mileage, shorter life span, etc.

Best course of action, check your tire pressure regularly when cold, and make sure it's at the recommended level.

Another aspect of this, is that since compressed air is 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, as the oxygen and water vapor is slowly absorbed into the sidewall and you replace it with more compressed air, the over all percentage of nitrogen will increase. So over time, assuming all the gas in the tire is not purged and then replaced with fresh compressed air, you will begin to approach a pure nitrogen gas.

I'll leave it to someone else out there to do the math and determine how long that would take and if it would even occur in your lifetime. wink.gif

  18. Purchased 2011 Edge Limited two weeks ago. Today started it up and there is a black square in the middle of the Ford Touch screen. It appears on all screens. ( Navigation, Sirius, Climate, and Phone) It is solid and blocks everything behind it. Any ideas on what it is or how to get rid of it?

Pulling fuse 29 will reset the MFT/SYNC system so it reboots. If that doesn't fix it then there's probably a hardware issue with the APIM that the dealer will need to fix.
